Ok. Looks like I’ll be going with DupliColor’s Vinyl & Fabric Coating but I have a quick question before I commit to it.
Just like Dances with Ninjas, I’m looking to color some stripes as opposed to a solid color (the British flag to be exact, like my avatar). With Vinyl Dye seeping into the plastic itself how would I stop it from spreading to where I don’t want it to? will masking off areas suffice or will it seep under the masking tape?
2-color Vinyl Dye question…
Hi Guys -
I'm new here and have looked through the various threads detailing stick modding in order to learn how to customize a MadCatz TE Fightstick. Every single question I could have had was easy to find, except for one.
I am preparing to use VHT Vinyl Dye on the red bezel of the TE stick, and I can't really find an answer to this question: Because I want to dye both the bezel and the sides blue, I purchased both white and blue vinyl dye. So while the sides should be easy enough (just spray blue on it), when I go to do the bezel I will need to apply the white first, and then the blue. In order to do so properly, do I apply the white in multiple coats as normal, allow it to cure completely and THEN start over with the blue? Or just do a few coats of white with 10 minute breaks and then start coating with blue?
The reason I ask is because the instructions say that all coats need to be done within 1 hour, and if any coats are to be applied after 1 hour then you have to wait 7 days before applying new coats.
Hopefully you guys have some suggestions/answers. I just don't want to screw it up because I never bothered to ask.
Thanks!
EDIT: I went ahead and painted (“dyed”) the red bezel with 2 coats of white, followed by 3 coats of blue all ten minutes apart. It came out perfect! So I would definitely recommend coating a dark color like red or black with white first and immediately follow it up with your color of choice.
I just finished painting my stick. It’s going to be a pain waiting a week to actually start putting it back together, but I guess I should spend this time doing something useful like getting the rest of my parts and cleaning up the huge mess I’ve made in the kitchen. I just have to remember, patience is the key to not messing up my new paint job!
I recently got an SE stick for the 360 and while i was taking the art off of the panel it occurred to me that putting a lamilabel on this would require almost perfect accuracy. So out of my laziness and curiosity I’m wondering if anyone has every tried painting the metal panel the artwork goes on instead of using artwork as well as what kind of paint did they use?
ok im planning on spraying my round 2 stick from black to white…
do i use vinyl dye,too?
will it look completely white or grayish black or do i just have to put on some more coats of paint?
since its a te stick i dont want to screw it up…
i finally started painting my SE Last week and so far here are the results.

it turned out really nice. there are some places that i messed up on but they are barely visible.
btw i used Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric. im gonna post the finished stick here when im done with it.
again thanks for all of your help guys
Anyone?
Quick question, if I painted mine with Duplicolor vinyl & fabric, what would I use to give it a glossy finish? Is it possible?
i used a glossy clear coat on mine.
Any particular kind?
Duplicolor Perfect Match protective clear coat finish.
i just did 2 light coats.
Sweet thanks
Thanks for all the info guys.
Bought a can of duplicolor vinyl and fabric tuner yellow for my bezel & 4 coats later, it’s looking real smooth (never used spray paint before either lol)
I’ll post pics when it gets done drying…
One question though; How many days should I let it dry?
I think the can said 1 hour till you can touch it and 7 hours till its ready to be put to use? I used dupli vinyl fabric too for my bezel, 4-5 coats and the next day it looked like it was straight from the factory, great stuff
I bought this stuff for doing my SE:

Quite disapointed. I think I must have done something really wrong. I applied light coats and let them dry between each one and it took about 6 before it was fully covered. I left it over night and woke up to it being glossy in patches and dull in others. Also there was a lot of drip which I thought is meant to “seep” in to the plastic which it hadn’t.
Would I be able to sand it down and try again or is my SE fucked now?
i’m also curious. i just want to paint the metal plate one solid color. what should i use for this? preferably something smooth and a bit glossy
Rustoleum is HORRIBLE stuff seriously. you can generally get it off with a combination of Nail polish remover (Acetone free is usually recommended, but you can use acetone) and 1500 grit sand paper.
