Painting the Fightstick (With Krylon or Vinyl Dye)

Did you buy rustoleum vinyl dye? or spray paint.

That is not vinyl dye. That is spraypaint coating with vinyl in it. The product page for it says “Contains actual vinyl for maximum flexibility”.

I would guess you can sand it down. Wear a mask!

Hey Guys,
I modded my stick recently and was a little rough and got some scratches on the sides and on the main part, so i have two questions.

  1. What paint/method can i use for an easy touch up on the middle part of the TE?
  2. What paint/method should i use on the sides of the TE so that they stay glossy and black?

I have a MVC Stick so everything is black and i want to just restore it a bit to its original state. Thanks and any help would be appreciated.

So I’m thinking painting the bezels on my TE stick. I’ve been thumbing through this forum and it seems that everyone is suggesting Vinyl Dye over anything else. I’m a complete beginner with painting ANYTHING, and this stuff seems like it’s the perfect solution for someone like me. low risk, high reward kinda deal.

However, I’ve been trying to find the right stuff and I’ve been of little success. I’ve checked a few local auto stores looking for VHT, but the only types of VHT I can find, are things like Engine Chrome and Caliper paint, doesn’t seem like the right shit. I see tons of other stuff like Duplicolor Vinyl and Krylon Fusion and other sorts of Vinyl/Fabric Paints. So I guess my question here is how to I tell is something is REALLY VINYL DYE, and what other brands are good to use?

alright i am about to paint my first stick and i am taking quite a bit. so vinyl dye sounds the best for a solid coat but… and here is the but. i am planning on doing 2 main colors with pin stripping and some color fade stencils so my question is, can you paint over the top of dye at all. and if not i am looking at using testers model enamel. i am going to be doing most if not all of this by hand with a brush. its not my first time painting but it is my first time painting on plastic like this. i need something that will let me do a lot of layering and possibly color washes… any help is much appreciated.

I used duplicolor vinyl and fabric dye for my bezel and it came out amazing. like it was always that color, and i’m not a pro or really ever spraypaint stuff, i just did exactly what the can said and it came out perfect. and i’ll post pics once my arts plexi gets here

coming off my bezel :frowning:

used krylon

Should of used vinyl dye.

I was going to paint the bezel of my TE black with the Dupli-color gloss black dye, but I was told earlier in the thread that I wouldn’t have the desired gloss effect (similar to the TE Round 2 sides) unless I used the Dupli-color acrylic laquer over it. However, there are several types to choose from and I’m not sure which one to go with; the ‘Clear Gloss’, ‘Black Semi-Gloss’, or ‘Black Gloss’ lacquer?

Also, what should the bezel be cleaned/rubbed down with before painting? And finally, if I wanted to paint the bottom of the bezel as well (bottom won’t be seen, but I’d like it to look professional), would I just completely finish the top first, then work on the bottom after it has dried?

No clue about the gloss, because I wanted mine flat/satin black, but I cleaned mine with a damp rag first to get the dust ect off it, then let it dry then started painting

I used Dupli-color on my round 2 TE this morning and it looks great. Did 3 coats of white today (because the pieces were black) and I’m going to do 3-4 coats of blue tomorrow. I’ve never painted/dyed anything before this and it was extremely easy. The whole process took around 35 minutes.

EDIT
Here’s the final product. It turned out great and it’s damn near flawless. I used Dupli-color HVP102.

You may want to check an auto parts store if you haven’t already. I been able to find both black flat/satin and black gloss duplicolor. If you can find black gloss you wouldn’t need anything else. Since the can doesn’t say it, look for the one with the shiny cap instead of the dull cap.

I couldn’t find the duplicolor clear coat, so I bought Krylon clear coat. Will this work?

Krylon isn’t really recommended over duplicolor.

Hmm… So should I return it? Where would you recomend to go to find the duplicolor clear coat?

I used masking tape like Xrebellion suggested with Vinyl Dye, and it turned out fine. Just be careful around the rounded-off corners of the SE stick.

Wow, this is my fav one in this thread, great job. By any chance does anyone have a link to this image?

+1, that image is awesome.

Anything with rustoleum needs to be sealed extremely well otherwise you’re looking at scratching and chipping in no time flat.
Same can be said for anything that isn’t vinyl dye really.
