Pad or stick?

okay of you’re so smart then what should it be instead of personal preference.

this thread sucks

why?

To hell with that. I had a Saturn, and that pad absolutely does not work for me.

Then again, I was playing on Saturn weren’t exactly classics…

With the first few replies it seemed like the common trend was to use a pad, but as the thread continued, I got more and more convinced that it’s more about your personal preference.

The reason I started this thread is I’ve always had the problem of occasionally throwing out a dragon punch when I meant to shoot a fireball, and when I got heavily into combos and supercanceling, my moves weren’t coming out like they should. Also, I think I’m probably on my sixth PS2 controller because I’m brutal with those things.

I want to try a stick. I think it just may be about personal preference, and if so, then I should try both things and see which one I like best. Now I just have to get over that price tag…

Time and time again.

Sticks are better in the end. Drill this into your brain.

I have seen awesome players with both. I do however, think that it is easier to achieve a high level of play on a stick.

It’s easier to do 360’s on a keyboard if you assign your keys so you can piano the movement from left to right or right to left.

So instead of:

…U
L D R

you would have

L D R U

good luck learning to play on that layout though.

Now, if I could just build a “stick” that was all buttons, and train myself to use it like it was second nature, I bet my execution would go through the roof.

I would say that, unless you’re the type of player that already got quite good on pad (where switching might be pointless at that point), that switching to stick is usually the best option. Just because people overcome the limitations o pads or keyboards doesn’t mean everyone can.

Also those people have a hard time at arcades. XD

What about the zapper? I want a nes -2-ps3 adapter so I can play sf4 with it

whats an arcade? i think i saw one in a museum before

jk, i actually went to an arcade to play SF4 today and if i didnt have stick experience i would have spent the whole time figuring out how to move my guy around, instead of learning the moves.

@OP

fighting games involve making directional inputs and pressing buttons. if youre just going from pad to stick, the directional input part becomes harder (but the pressing buttons part gets easier!). reason being on a pad youre used to making very small movements with your thumb to get your guy to move around; even with the most sensitive sticks you will have to move your hand more to get the same directional input. just know that for a month or so you will feel like you suck ass at whatever FGs you play while you adjust.

on the other hand, while the joystick is a superior input device, its not like pads automatically make you low tier. if youre already beastly on pads and cant go to/dont care about arcades theres no reason not to save your money, as sticks tend to cost a lot ($50+).

personally i think an arcade stick is a pretty neat piece of hardware to own, especially if you have a custom with real arcade parts. its even better if you can play on it.

oh and if you do get a stick im betting it has a square gate. quarter circles will be hard, square gates are just awesome :annoy: like that. spend some extra effort to really hit the forward direction when you do quarter circle forwards.

Probably because you were using the wrong Saturn pad.

stick… a good one btw

With this thread, we start the countdown to the resurfacing of it’s brother, the “how do you hold your stick no homo” thread.

with your mouth of course

no homo

Then you meant tampon pads, yes?

Anyway, I use stick because I like accuracy. I can still play on a pad, but mainly a Saturn pad for 2D fighters and PS2/3 pad for Tekken.

I started on arcade then got SF2 on Genesis/Megadrive and found the Sega 6 button pad to be the best pad I’ve ever used. I hear this is the same as the Saturn pad which everyone goes on about. I can’t play any other pad. It was great for non-charging moves so I mainly used Ryu/Ken.

These days I find the pads are just shit, so I play with a stick. I just find the sitting position with the stick on a table or your lap to be much harder than the standing position I used to play in the arcades, but still way better than a pad.

In short, get a good stick!

you sir speak nothing but the truth you are right though trying to use their anti airs on a pad can be somewhat annoying but if you play guile… well charge characters arent hard in my opinion on pad.

I know some people play piano with a pad, but that involves putting down the pad a part to tbe able to use your fingers to press the buttons. Completely odd for me, I was so happy I could finally learn to combo decently once I got a stick.

i’m switching to a stick soon but since forever i’ve used a pad. specifically, i’ve used a PS2 DS2 pad that i’ve had since i got my ps2, and it’s always worked wonders for me. maybe i just aged the pad the right way because i never have trouble doing any inputs for any move. the ONLY thing i could never do was standing 720, the closest i’ve ever gotten was buffering jab into a gigas. even then i’ve used 360 characters and charge characters with certain efficiency.

then again, this is like my “personal” pad, so IMO all other ps2 pads suck, but maybe everybody else has a pad like that.

I use a chinese dual shock rip off with 6 buttons at the front and it’s surprisingly good. Some things are still hard to do like 3k / 3p and button release piano inputs (regular piano inputs are easy) though. I’ll get a stick once I have some extra money.
