The regional kaiju thing could tie in to main made monsters or dormant rift kaiju.

lol Keep in mind, I’m not saying that I necessarily want any of this, just that Del Toro might do something more ambitious now that a lot of fans actually are invested in the established plot. Pacific Rim ended up being more than just a simple summer action flick with mechas, the characters and world is actually pretty cool. People are probably writing their own fanfics on Pacific Rim already.
There’s one part of the movie that just really reminded me of something from Macross Plus. Considering Del Toro acknowledged he was drawing on shows he loved there’s a possibility this is a tribute to the anime (or I could be reading too deeply into it).

You’re reading too far into that.
Also, the Pacific Rim artbook is godlk and so unique. There’s a lot of extras in it that you don’t expect from an artbook like fold out Jaeger spec sheets, and character cards. It also has a pouch at the end that contain 2 propaganda posters.
Some of the concept Jaeger designs were really cool and I wish some of them made it into the movie.

The unnamed humanoid kaiju Jmac posted is exactly the kind of design I expect in the sequel.
IMO he’s lacking a certain motif that makes all the other Yaegars stand out, in appearance.
