Saw it Saturday and honestly loved the fuck out of this movie.
The scale of how absolutely big the Jeagers and Kaiju are is just so well done.
The Asian chick’s story (meya? my bad im at work, cant remember) was so sad, you cant help but feel for the little girl cause its like…fuck…that Kaiju is so fuckin huge!
I have to applaud Del Toro for making me believe that everything in this movie was real (while I watched it anyway)
now I’m off to go kill myself since grownups 2 made more money than this masterpiece.
[details=Spoiler]I totally agree with someone’s earlier comparison of Leatherback’s reaction to the entrance of Gipsy Danger to that of a typical WWE wrestling match. Too bad the choppers didn’t carry a titantron.
It was also too bad the russians and chinese got peaced relatively quickly. The Chinese jager was doing some pretty sweet moves.
One question I have is, if the rift is located just outside of Hong Kong, how did the Kaiju manage to make it to other parts of the world? From what I gathered only one monster at a time came through prior to the “double event”. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to have the jagers stationed at the hong kong base to begin with and pick off the kaiju as they came through?
Maybe I missed something.
heh. I can just see a gang of 15 or more jagers curb stomping the shit out of the hapless kaiju as soon as it comes through the portal.
They don’t always know exactly when a Kaiju will come through so they can’t preemptively have Jaeger waiting for it. Even in this movie when their rate of occurrence had accelerated to the point it was kind of predictable, the one scientist could only narrow it to within a week we’ll have a double event and after that a triple. Also it seems like when ever a kaiju came through is started moving toward a target city. It was treated as an anomaly that the 2 category IV kaiju stayed and circled the Breach.
Movie was awesome and I really liked how it was a modern take on an old 1970’s Japanese Mecha Anime. The Kaiju, the Jaegers, the swords, the chest missiles, all of it was just awesome. I loved the dynamic angles the movie had, it felt like a cartoon being live-acted by real people.
The only things I didn’t like were, the Chinese Mech. I’m sorry but a Mech with three arms and no guns just seems faulty to me. I can get what they were going for, but a mech with three of those Plasma Cannons would have just merked every Kaiju in sight. (This movie brought out the war nut in me, I’m usually a pacifist lol.)
Also, the whole Analog vs the EMP thing was faulty science, EMP’s destroy all electronics basically and the US Military was afraid of Russian EMP’s in the 1960’s, where everything was Analog. I can see why they needed to hand wave that as the Kaiju literally would have won the movie if the movie went into full reality mode, but it was just something I needed to point out after researching it.
I do wish we saw more of the Aliens who made the Kaiju.
So overseas, do they do voice overs for American movies, or sub-titles…or assume everyone can speak it cause its from 'Murica?
*yes I’m picturing Idris saying ‘Canceling the Apocolypse’ in various languages…and I still want that shirt…
