Other Publishers and General Comic Book Discussion Thread

Spiderman’s What If? Other comic sucks.

If you want to slurp and glurp on some more Vertigo cock, then you should also read Y: THE LAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSST MAAAAANNNNNNN!!!1111!1

It’s written by Brian K. Vaughan and is definitely the best Vertigo book out for the past 3 years.

I would caution against sandman. It is really a product of its time. Flip through it first, see if you like it.

A good resource for crisis tpb stuff is www.crisis2crisis.com as well as the infinite crisis faq in the dc forum at comicbookresources.com

Nope, for the same reason, you probably won’t see a Ultimate Daredevil series, both characters are too similar to their source material. Although the recent Ultimate Spiderman annual seems like they might be appearing around the Ultimate universe as a sort of Ultimate Marvel Knights team.

Bullshit. The only thing that’s iffy about sandman is some of it’s art. The story is fucking incredible.

leigh go read ennis’ punisher

Well, here is my take on the CW comic and tie-ins (nov)
yes im late but i dont care
SPOILER ALERT
IM have been getting his ass handed to him lately and kind of deserves it.

BP #22: I already stated of how BP kicked IM ass and threaten him. It was great where they tried to be slick and have storm register and they countered with the quickness

Amazing Spider-Man Vol 2 #536: Another IM beat down. We do see the details between CW 5 and 6 after his fight with IM.

Captain America Vol 5 #24: Wasnt too much about civil war, it was mainly a setup for the next arc against Red skull.

Civil War Front Line #8: Green Goblin was let loose and shot an atlantian rep, captain america was in diguise and confronted sally, she-hulk is temporarily blind and i forget the 4th story or was their a 4th one?

Civil War Young Avengers & Runaways #4: I like how it ended and it gives a setup to Noh-Varr plans, declaring it to be the capital city of the new Kree empire.

Iron Man Vol 4 #13: his bodyguard died, and he somewhat has doubts. He was also approached to become head of S.H.E.I.L.D.

New Avengers #25 Maria Hill suggests that Tony might become the next acting head of S.H.I.E.L.D. oh yeah IM gets his ass kicked again

Punisher War Journal Vol 2 #1: events prior to spiderman’s ass kicking in CW #5

Wolverine Vol 3 #48 (casualties of war tie-in): talks about the many times wolverine nearly died in each moment through CW and he boned one of the atlantian chicks inspite of her husband was killed by nitro.

Non CW related
Ms Marvel Vol 2 #9: Long ass explaination that was discussed in post by sano. But to add she didnt fight in events that occured to ms marvel # 2 or 3 about some alien threat that lead to the end of the world and bring warbird to CW reality.

so i’m thinking about reading hulk but i wanted to get some replies about what you guys thought would be a good place to start reading. keep in mind, i haven’t actually read comics since i was a kid so i’m basically starting from scratch. so, is planet hulk any good? if so, where should i start? thx in advance.

unfortunately there hasnt been any planet hulk trades yet apart from Prelude to Planet Hulk which is written by Daniel Way and can be read in about 4 minutes. If you go by issues I believe PH starts at #94

In other news I’m reading through the last Xmen AoA Epic tpb and lovin it. I just finished the last of the mini-series’ and am about to read Xmen Omega. Wolverine’s claws popping through his metal knub was awesome

I got my gf the Strangers in Paradise pocket book volume one. She liked Persopolis so I’m trying to bring her slowly around.

Anyone else read Spider-Man: Reign? This story looks like it’ll end up being a classic. This is exactly the kind of comic I love to see from Marvel Knights. It’s been a good long while since I’ve felt so impatient for the next issue after reading the first issue.

this week’s WE ARE THE WALKING DEAAAAAAAAAAADD!!!111111111111 was hella crazy. word of advice : DO NOT FUCK WITH CRAZY BLACK GIRLS THAT CARRY AROUND A KATANA

Sounds like a pretty good film that puts a lot of emphasis on parts of Superman other than a fighter. I can live with that. Guess I’ll pick up the special edition.

Comics I bought on Wednseday:

Civil War #5
Stan Lee Meets Dr. Doom
Stan Lee Meets Silver Surfer

All the DuckTales I’ve been watching has gotten me interested in picking up The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. Gonna see if I could get it at Borders.

Anyone read the new Ant-Man? I mean, the one where he’s dubbed “The World’s Worst Super Hero”? I’ve been wondering how it is.

I read a little of Stan Lee Meets Silver Surfer- I really dug that Paul Jenkins/Mark Buckingham story. Those two guys do great work together. It reminds me that I gotta go back and track down all those Peter Parker: Spider-Man stories they did. If Bucky weren’t doing FAAAAAAAAAABLES!!11 he should be doing more Spidey.

I have had The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck on my hitlist for a couple years now. Didn’t that book win a Harvey or an Eisner or something? I’ve flipped through it several times and it looks like a great read, and I don’t even like Disney much. In any case, namechecking Scrooge will probably get us a sano paragraph in this very thread. Good deal.

Jenkins and Bucky are an excellent team. They did some really good stories when they were doing Peter Parker: Spider-Man.

Yeah, I figured if I mentioned The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck that sano would pop in and give me the 411 on that book and add in what he thinks about it. I was reading aboud DuckTales on wiki a few weeks ago and I clicked on Scrooge McDuck. I had no idea the character was so old. He’s been around longer than my parents (both are 52 but they don’t look it). If The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is a good read then, I wonder if anything else by Carl Barks would be worth checking out.

Ultimate Vision was pretty tight. A Marvel book that featured none of the heroes and it was actually entertaining. Mike Carey ftw…so far.

Uncanny Xmen was pretty dragged out this issue. A lot more character development this time and Darwin just straight up knocked out that Shi’ Ar dude. Negro install, yo.

And then, Dr. Strange: The Oath. Oh my fucking God am I loving this book. Daredevil, Captain America, The Immortal Iron Fist and now this…fuck man. This is too good.

I’ll start the DC stuff tomorrow and give some more insight. I did pick up Batman Confidential yesterday. Looked pretty good from the previews I saw.

Yeah the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is great! It was written by Don Rosa who for all intents and purposes is Carl Barks’ succesor. What he did was take a lot of old stories from Scrooge McDuck and put everything together to tell his entire backstory. Remember that episode of Duck Tales where Scrooge told his past to his nephews? It’s like that but much much longer, better, and funnier! It reveals lots of little things like who is Donald Duck’s mother, how exactly is Grandma Duck related to them and so on where the Duck Tales episode didn’t really answer anything like that. It’s also kind of cool that Life and Times doesn’t fully contradict the Duck Tales episode either that much, it is pretty much the same story only it’s been told in lots more detail as the book is not restrained to a half an hour.

Don Rosa is a great great draftsman. He hides lots of little things in his panels, they are worth looking over again and again. He is hands down the best Disney comic book artist and story teller out right now.

Overall Carl Barks was still a better storyteller, but he passed away a few years back, RIP. But Rosa is a good successor. I can’t really explain this but lots of stories Barks has done that I read many years ago as a kid still stay with me. Most of the time whenever I pick up any current Disney comic, I look to see if it either has a reprint of a Barks story I didn’t read (He did THOUSANDS of stories) or a Don Rosa insert, if not I just put it back. It’s sad that no one out there can live up to these two.

If you like it there’s also a Companion book to the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck also.

And there are two volumes currently out now which cover all of the original Carl Barks stories which Duck Tales turned into cartoon episodes.

I say this all of the time but despite it’s subject matter these comics really are not just all for kids. Carl Barks was a huge fan of National Geographic and would research it all of the time and that’s how he got most of his Globe Trotting adventure stories. Don Rosa does the same thing. In many parts of the world where they could care less about men wearing tights Uncle Scrooge, his nephews and Donald Duck are extremely popular due to Barks’ comics beloved by ADULTS and they are almost superstars! There’s lots of tidbits regarding their worldwide popularity if you read all of Don Rosa’s notes in Life and Times.

Only sad thing is that stores don’t tend to order to many of these books in the US which sometimes leads to them selling out pretty fast, but all of the books I’ve mentioned above have come out this year so it may not be that tough.

Best book for me this week was Detective Comics. Paul Dini didn’t even write a mystery this time but it was still a great and funny Joker story!

Oh and a nod goes out to Bru X-Men. Ha ha, Rachel hooking up with a Shiar! First Nightcrawler was pushing up on both Storm and Rachel. Storm got married and now Rachel got with someone else, oooh… well he is in outer space so I’m hoping Nightcrawler will get back with Cerise, his best love interest back from the ol’ Alan Davis Excalibur days! I dunno, that whole Amanda Sefton thing always made me feel like he was dating his adopted sister… well he was dating his adopted sister… um… ewww…

where is marvel civil wars what are some major hero/villian team ups of unregistered super beings.

was this the same episode as the one where he tells the origin of his number one dime? that episode is a classic. is the duck tales movie on dvd yet?

Played the demo of Superman Returns (360) today. Pretty fun. As much as I hate “Superman” as a character, they did a good job of making the player feel like you’re really him. Feels like the Spider-Man 2 game with the open city, go anywhere sandbox feel to it.

Feels unfinished (the demo) in asense. Controls were a bit laggy or off. No lock on, which really hurts it in my opinion. Found myself trying to grab people to save, and grabbed a car next to them instead.

I’ma rent the game, and give it a go sometime near the end of this month. I’ll report on how it was with it.

sano, is there anything else from Don Rosa & co that is worth picking up? I’ll be sure to add Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck to my “to get” list of books, but I wonder if there’s anything else I should look out for.

Read Civil War #5. I peeked in my friends copy at his place last week but I didn’t actually reaidng it… man. This story continues to amaze me. Daredevil’s line at the end was classic.

Also read Stan Lee Meets Dr. Doom/Silver Surfer. Funny stuff. I encourage everyone that likes to laugh to pick up all five Stan Lee Meets titles. Stan’s stories are freaking hilarious, but the other stories by writers like Bendis and Leob are also pretty good. I LOVED the artwork in the main story in Stan Lee Meets Dr. Doom. Was goregous stuff. Stan Lee Meets Silver Surfer has a reprint of Silver Surfer #14. In this issue SS meets Spider-Man and they duke it out. Good action and good writing. Was the first story I read from the old SS days. Love how Stan makes the Surfer talk.
