The story is pretty much the same. He worked very hard to clean someone’s shoe and recieved the lucky dime.
There’s even a story in the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion where Magica travels back in time to interfere with the story and get the Lucky Dime first!
One thing about the comics and Don Rosa - this is where he and the comics in general differ from Duck Tales - Don refuses to believe that the Lucky Dime is ‘magic’ and gave Uncle Scrooge magical powers so he can achieve his fortune. He regards it as a good luck charm and nothing else. This is because he feels that Uncle Scrooge worked/works very hard for his money and he didn’t get his fortune because of a Lucky Dime.
ReggieHadoken - There are a few books by Don Rosa in trades but I usually try to get his stuff in single issue stories, so it’s hard for me to say. Barks’ old TPBs run up pretty high some times too and it may be best to find his stories whenever they reprint in a comic book. The best Barks story is the one with the square chickens called “Lost in the Andes.” Rosa wrote a sequel to it called “Return to Plain Awful.” It’s a famous story about square chickens laying square eggs, lol! Though I’m not too sure about either of them as far as trades go, but there is at least an older trade for “Lost in the Andes.” I’m not too sure about Rosa’s sequel story. You can probably dig around Gemstone’s site to sniff some of this stuff out.
But a good starting place for Duck Tales fans like I said after Life & Times and the Companion is the recent editions from Gemstone that feature Bark’s original stories and how they were made into cartoon episodes, these are both fairly recent so you may find them in stores -
The first one even has “Back to the Klondike” which is a little rare to find in comic book form and is also important to “Life and Times,” but Rosa can’t really re-tell the entire story in Life and Times since his approach is to dance around Barks’ stuff to form a continuity but there are several nods to that story. It’s the Duck Tales episode where they go back to Scrooge’s gold mining days and where he meets Glittering Goldie.
Ha ha, since X-Mas time is near - this book has Carl Barks’ story “Letter to Santa” which is my favorite Christmas comic book story of all time. The three nephews ask Santa for a freaking stream shovel and Donald forgets to male the letter out to Santa! So he can’t afford a shovel and he goes to Scrooge to buy one for them. Scrooge buys one for Donald, but then learns that Santa would get all of the credit instead of him! So he gets them another one to make sure they will now that Scrooge paid for it! Well, stuff happens and in the end Donald and Scrooge wind up having a big old battle with them in steam shovels having an old school mecha fight!
The DuckTales ep where Scrooge tells his nephews how he got his Number One Dime is CLASSIC!! I was surprised when I was reading about DuckTales on wiki that some of the eps originated from Carl Barks comics such as “Back to the Klondike” and “Earth Quack.”
So Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is only $16.99? Wow, that’s great! I thought it would cost much more than that. I’m gonna call my Borders and see if they have any in. I think I’ll just get the regular Life and Times since it has more pages than the Companion.
Man, sano, I think I’m getting hooked on this stuff. Too bad Carl Barks isn’t still alive. R.I.P., sir.
Just finished reading the rest of Wednesday stuff. HOLY FUCK GODDAMN! JSA #1 was the shit. Crazy shit already happening in the first issue alone. And it seems that someone will be making a return in JSA. Good old Infinite Crisis. Can none of you EVER stay dead?
Also, Dini’s latest issue of Detective Comics was fucking hilarious. God bless the Joker. There isn’t ONE Christmas where we don’t see him. Some serious quotable stuff in this issue.
So…this weeks top 2 were Dr. Strange: The Oath #3 and JSA #1.
I just did some super-fucking power-reading in the past day or two of the entire Exiles series, up until now. And holy shit. Fucking loved every moment of it. I definitely recommend it.
I’m setting up the Holy Elfen Female Trio Order (Blink, Notcurne and Namora) soon.
Also, just snagged Spiderman: Reign. I’ll report my reading when I’m done with it.
Also, for some oldie but goodies, I’m currently re-reading one of my fave comic books ever, Scud: The Disposable Assassin. If anyone remembers that, you will remember its ahead of its time writing and pwnage off bat.
I think it was the 5 part pilot. It’s on the vol. 2 DVD. Disc 1 DVD case has them labeled as Treasure of the Golden Suns but they all have their own ep name.
Alive yes, well no. They killed batgirl, and left the superboy punched husk of Cassandra Cain. They destroyed a dynamic character to make room for some socialite lipstick lesbian. She might as well be dead. At least she’d have her dignity.
P.S. I’ve heard that one of the Titan’s East is a traitor. That’s a one in seven chance…
Yeah I did read something like that online too. Not that if bugs me too much since I only brought them for the occasional Barks reprint I haven’t read, they didn’t print too much of Don Rosa’s stuff.
At the very least issue #2 of Gargoyles from Amaze Ink/Slave Labor Graphics comes out this week. Hopefully with this issue they will finish recapping the events of the first episode of the third season of Gargoyles and move into new territory with issue #3.
The Question is sick in 52, not sure if he will pull through it or not, like what I mean is since all of the other comics take place about 52 weeks after 52 maybe one of them said he died for real.
Teen Titans issues seemed to hint that Starfire is also gonna die in 52, they showed her picture with a bunch of dead Teen Titans in a room in the tower if I remember right.
Pfff… like death means anything in comics… COUGHCOUGH Jason Todd, Bucky COUGHCOUGH
But a ressurrected character will suffur an agonizing existence of bad writing and characterization… unless the writer is Brubaker. Then you’re golden.
EDIT: Denny O’Neil should superboy punch his way out of retirement and stop this mess.
woot! ultimate spiderman vol. 8 HC in the march solits.
also in there is the civil war tpb which made me laugh. This is supposed to be a big event on par with infinite crisis (just as HoM was hyped to be on par with IC) but just like HoM it is released in a regular ol tpb along with a bazillion other spiderman: civil war tpb avengers: civil war tpb etc etc. At least give it to me chronological with more than 4 issues per trade.
That’s cool. If you like it I strongly suggest you get the Companion book later. Really good stuff. But it’s better to start off with Life & Times to see if it’s for you or not. Uncle Scrooge even gets LAID in the Companion! Well it’s kind of left to your interpretation that he and Glittering Goldie do the deed during the month she worked the claim with him - but there aren’t many other ways to interpret it lol! It’s a story from Rosa as recent at 2005, very cool!
Oh yeah, Don Rosa wrote two episodes of the Tale Spin cartoon - ‘I Only Have Ice for You’ and ‘It Came From Beneath the Sea Duck.’
