Spider-Man & Red Sonja meet again! Oh and Eddie Brock Venom is in this story too! Excuse me while I break dance! All I need is a Shuma-Gorath cameo (Kulan Gath tried to revive Shuma-Gorath in Conan before) and I’m set!
EDIT: Holy crap, Hyborian styled Spider-Man villains! Man how about a Doctor Shuma-Gorathopus, Doctor Octopus + Shuma-Gorath? Doc Ock with Shuma-Gorath for a chest!
Dude, ever read the Dr. Fate comic from the late '80s/early '90s? Written by J.M. DeMatteis with Shawn McManus art, that series was incredible. Their run was about 25 issues long and it basically formed a really impressive graphic novel. Plus, that was an '80s comic with quality paper stock, extra story pages per issue, and mature themes. DC really was ahead of the curve back in the day.
Shiiiiiiiit, Zeph dropping the 80s bomb. DC had a LOT of good shit in the 80s on a fairly consistent basis, aside from Watchmen and DKR. Alan Davis on Batman, ferchrissakes!
I vaguely remember the story arc and characters for that Dr. Fate. A guy and a girl merged to form Fate, who seemed to be an engine of Vengeance, and they had Kent as a mentor. They had a pet demon, too.
…what happened to McManus? Has he fallen off the face of the Earth? Last comic I saw him on was Ghost Rider, and that was AAAAAAAGES ago.
Joe Q at Marvel needs to quit being a butt hole. Marriage is a natural progress of comic book characters. Fans love the Spidey/MJ marriage and he wants to split them up because them being together bothers him? What a jerk. If Peter & MJ split the fans are going to riot. They will want two things: 1.) The damage to be fixed for ruining Peter & MJ’s marriage. 2.) The blood of Joe Q. His blood will be spilled in massive amounts and then burned.
I’m in book four of The Dark Knight Returns. I thought for sure Bats killed The Joker, but turns out he twisted his own neck, pinning murder on Batman. The showdown between Supes and Bats should be dope.
Yeah I agree but I think it’s misdirection. Long ago he said he’d never have them get a divorce or kill off MJ(but you can’t really trust stuff he says). Maybe we’ll find out the Priest that married them off is a robot so it doesn’t count or something like that.
New Frontier - David Boreanaz (Angel) as Green Lantern? Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser, Spider-Man on the MTV cartoon) as Flash? Oh yeah, I can see it. Ultimate Marvel movies, prepare to get analy raped.
Oh and I hope they don’t use those crappy colors they use for Ultimate Marvel, Hellboy, Stan Lee Presents movies. Keep the colors looking nice and clean like JLU, Ben Ten, pretty much anything on TV and any anime… straight to video crappy colors need to go…
Damn straight, my man. What was crazy nutso was the fact that the male half of Dr. Fate was a little boy physically altered to the age of an adult. AND he was the nephew of the female half of Fate. BUT because he looked like a sexy adult, his aunt was in love with him romantically… Totally twisted, but seriously interesting. And the pet demon was hilarious- the embodiment of Greatest Pet/Creature/Sidekick/Comic Relief/Human Emotion.
DeMatteis is one of the most under appreciated comics writers I can think of. The dude has written some genuine classics, like Brooklyn Dreams and Moonshadow. He can’t get enough love.
McManus did a comic a couple of years ago for ABC or WildStorm. It was called Wild Girl and Leah Moore (Alan Moore’s daughter) wrote it. I never read it. Other than that, I’m not sure what he’s been up to. But he’s a great artist, too. Pretty much anyone who’s ever illustrated Sandman is a great artist.
Check out this mindblowing cover for example. This has got to be one of the most kickass Darkseid covers ever: http://www.comicvine.com/comic/doctor-fate/3995/31957/&i=5898
Seriously, and I’m not just saying this to bait Clinty into making a post, but McManus gives Ron Lim a run for his money in the category of EXPLOSIVE POWER BLASTS.
12 issues long, high quality Baxter stock paper (that’s where TMNT villain Baxter Stockman got his name), billed as the first maxi-series of all time, and featuring Brian Bolland on covers AND interiors IN COLOR. The first issue shipped December 1982 and the final issue shipped in April 1985. There was a 9 month gap between issues 11 and 12. People today complain when a book ships two weeks late, but I didn’t hear nobody complaining back in the '80s, back in my day, when I was a toddler. No siree, back in the day, we had class and patience. And no damn Internet.
The point is, Camelot 3000 set some high precedents. It was way ahead of its time, despite the fact that it was rarely ever on time.
I have not read Blood yet, to be honest. I have a copy of it sitting on my table, but it’s still in the queue. I’ll get to it, though.
I recently read his Joker “Going Sane” story from Legends of the Dark Knight, and that was very good, too. He’s said that Going Sane and Kraven’s Last Hunt are his two favorite superhero stories that he’s written, even moreso than his Justice League.
Abadazad- I forgot to mention that in the last post, but that’s gold as well. I’ve been reading Hero Squared, and it’s pretty entertaining. If you liked his Justice League, Hero Squared is right up that alley.
I think the only DeMatteis comic I didn’t like was that Vertigo Prestige Format one-shot, Mercy. That comic felt like a rehash of all of his New Age positivity. Seekers Into The Mystery was pretty good, too, but that also felt like it was rehashing some of his themes.
If I have any criticism about DeMatteis, and that’s a big IF, it’s that many of comics deal with the same themes. How many times have we seen the New Age Smile Of Universal Love in his comics? I lost track. Not that it’s the worst thing in the world to specialize in an unusual point of view- it’s refreshing, actually- but I like it when he does different things. I just feel like the stuff he wrote about in Brooklyn Dreams and Moonshadow embodied his worldview the best.
I almost forgot they were making a Wanted movie. Then I saw Newsarama say that Angelina Jolie is gonna play the Fox.
Read the new Amazing Spider-Man today. What the… Spider’s acting way too out of character even given the circumstances. It’s not even reflective of the way Spidey’s acting in any other book where he’s wearing black. Gosh darn it does everything that’s going to happen in a movie have to be worked into comics? What’s next human being Blackheart from the Ghost Rider flick? This story is ongoing but so far, me no likey…
Next up for me to read is Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness, looking forward to that at least. Should be fun.
JMS has fallen so OFF on Amazing, it isn’t funny… anymore. At least Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman and Sensational are pretty good. Even if they more or less don’t count.
And I expect human Blackheart within a year and half. If not in Ghost Riders, then possibly one of the many Marvel books featuring magic (i.e. New X-Men’sQuest for Magik arc, Mystic Arcana, Thor and probably New Avengers).
Yeah, if things are going the way they are after One More Day I’m gonna drop all 616 Spidey books except for Friendly. Nothing against Sensational, it’s just getting caught in the wave. When Venom appears in Sensational I’ll make an exception. They really are screwing up Spidey right now just for a freaking movie and so JQ can get his wish and mess up his wedding… I was all for his unmasking and it was all good for a while, but now…
Really man, Aunt May’s had 5 heart attacks and even died once. Who the Hell is supposed to believe these new events are gonna turn Pete into Punisher? Least last time he had the black costume and was acting crazy they decided to blame it on the symbiote. Seriously though, what the…
I don’t think Sensational has been good lately. I always try to read it at the store but I can hardly ever finish. The last issue I remember liking was the one where Peter, after unmasking in CW, tries to go to his school, and encounters one of his students and Doc Ock. I haven’t been too interested with the villain of the month approach. And I think the art is just bad.
Friendly Neighborhood is sweet, though… That one issue about the girl and her blog (“Nothing important happened today.”) has got to be one of the best dang single Spider-Man issues this side of the Paul Jenkins era. That issue was gold.
