Other Publishers and General Comic Book Discussion Thread

I think you answered your own question in two parts. DC has the better colorists and inkers while Marvel is cheap. Marvel get’s fancy, books raise in price. =/

Oh I know it wasn’t property damage that caused the surrender.
I just think that if that was the goal… a better writer would’ve found a way to get cap to that realization. albeit, less tearfully also.

maybe cap could’ve beat tony up and caused him to go into cardiac arrest and then when medics come and talk to him he coulda been like “what have i done” i dont’ know that kinda sounds lame too. but still i’d have like to get to that “realization” in a different fashion.

that last issue should’ve been Cap Vs. Iron Man.

22 wordless splash pages of Cap relentlessly pummelling Tony with his shield. hell, it could’ve been the same image repeated 22 times.

that’s the only way it could’ve ended right.

JLA is great. They just finished their first arc, so if you want to jump on, next month or the month after that would be good. I think the next one is a stand-alone issue, then they start the JLA/JSA crossover (only bad part would be that you’d also have to pick up JSA for the full story, but I hear that’s great anyways).

well, see, I can’t be adding more titles, it’s either Justice League, or Justice Society, or something else.

it can’t be both.

Fuck everyone else. Read JSA. For me…FOR GREAT JUSTICE!

Well, you could just pick up one or the other, then “catch up” online for the two or three issues you’d be missing out of the story from the other title.

Wolverine vol. 1 The Brotherhood

First introduced to Greg Rucka through his collaboration with comics-god Matt Wagner, then through his numerous work on DC’s Infinite Crisis tie-ins and superb Wonder Woman run, I have recently sampled some of his work for Marvel, first with the satisfying but underscored Ultimate Daredevil & Elektra and now with the first volume from his 19-issue run on Wolverine, The Brotherhood. This material came out I believe around the same time as Grant Morrison’s shake-up of the X-world in New X-Men and this is evident in the down-to-earth setting with a distinct lack of costumes or super villains (sano’s favorite). This is an interesting choice to start off a new #1 with - Wolverine was at one point in the late 90s the X-title with the highest number - as is the decision to pace the book for trade rather than a self-contained #1 issue. Unlike other recent first issues put out by Marvel, Wolverine at least does make an appearence in his own comic.

The story is very reminiscent of David Lapham and Garth Ennis in its setup of a superhero becoming involved in the plight of a downtrodden citizen whose tormenters he must seek out and exact revenge. The art by Darick Robertson furthers the Ennis-comparisons although it is more toned down and flattering than his depiction of Wolverine in his last Marvel Knights Punisher foray. The familiar setup leads to well-worn story beats as Wolverine sniffs out the kidnappers and assaults their lair but Rucka’s dialogue and descriptions are so good that we really don’t mind this is something we have seen before. There is a scene near the end of the arc where Wolverine goes into his berserker rage and we see this through one of the coolest and most effective two-page splashes I have seen.

The final issue in the tpb is a coda that finds Wolverine in a mutant bar discussing what is a man and questions of religion with Nightcrawler. Some of Nightcrawler’s dialogue rubbed me the wrong way, but Wolverine’s sentiments carried over the final 2 pages prove to be a great payoff to the whole arc and a really nice insight to his character.

Rating: 4 (out of 5) Grendels

Nice review man! Rucka is cool.

Finished reading Makeshift Miracle, a web comic by Zub that Udon just published. Very cool fairy tale type of story, also a good use of monochromatic color. Nice twist ending too.

And about Wolverine Origins… Cyber came back to life… kind of… and it was really odd the way he did it… a little creepy too. We finally learn the name of Wolvie’s son - it’s Daken and he and Logan are gonna fight next issue. Origins has been bloody since day one so I’m looking forward to that! :nunchuck:

Justice Society of America. Not only is it Johns with Alex Ross ideas (and covers), but most of its characters are given actual characterization and great plotlines. It also is pretty good if you are a fan or are interested in DC history.

oh yeah, I forgot to mention.

I fucking hate Alex Ross, so his ‘ideas’ and ‘covers’ are complete no-sells to me.

Read JSA.

Went into Borders after work to kill some time while waiting for my bus. Told myself I wasn’t gonna buy anything but then I saw it. Was totally unexpected but it was there - Batman: Year One. It was like the book was calling out to me to buy it and I couldn’t refuse. So I bought it. The back of the book was highly praised by various writers and media. Should be a dope read.

I’m still reading The Dark Knight Returns. Just got throubh book two. Batman beasted on the Mutant Leader and then a ton of members in the group changed from The Mutants to the Sons of The Batman. He made them respect them by owning the Mutant Leader in front of them. Was too good. :wgrin:

Asgard in Oklahoma?, New Thor Rumblings

Picked up the Emperor Joker TPB on Sat.

Why isn’t Joe Kelly writing Superman anymore?

Is that the one where Joker messes with the universe?

Let me know how that is…

Not that odd considering that Asgard was floating over New York City for about a freaking year, but people on the street could only see it in Thor comics and all other comics ignored this, kind of like how Manhattan was wrecked for a year only in X-Men books at the same exact time.

Seriously though it is good for Marvel to get some people out of New York, like they are doing with the Initiative. This is how you avoid incidents like the above. At the very least this move should get Donald Blake out of the city. I always thought Doctor Strange would fit very well in Salem, and I miss West Coast Avengers…

Thor and Norse Gods not talking Medieval English? What the Hell is JMS doing, trying to make sense?

Still a little pissed at JMS that he is writing Spider-Man Another Day which from what I’m hearing might completely do away with Spidey’s marriage to Mary Jane so Joe Quesada will finally have his wish to split them up for good, and to that I say booooo… but this could all be misdirection, guess I have to read it… I wish JQ would allow them to have kids already damn… but he doesn’t want that because he wants to perserve the youth of the character… like a divorce or making him a widow is gonna make him seem young… JQ, the guy went to High School (for 20 years and he will never leave High School in Ultimate Spider-Man), graduated from College, he’s ‘teh old’ man, if you want Spidey to stay young forever that’s what Ultimate Spidey is for. Let May (Spider-Girl) be born in 616 already yeash or at least pull some Soap Opera / Xena / Angel crap and say that baby MJ miscarried is May who never died and Norman Osborne secretly has her in a lab where he aged her 15 years already lol!

Dr. Fate lives in Salem in the DCU.

Cool!

new Avengers spoiler. Cick at own risk
