Other Publishers and General Comic Book Discussion Thread

Or, you could just read the issues at the store to catch yourself up and then buy the trade later so you can actually own it in a longer-lasting and space-saving format.

P. Gorath: Damn, you get the hardcovers?? I’m sorry man, I won’t complain anymore.

Hopefully you won’t have to wait till September though. The Deadpool and Morbius arcs plus the second annual was in the last softcover, so maybe all of that plus Clone Saga will be all they put in the next hardcover…

Zephy: I would if it was something like…Teen Titans or New Avengers. But I like to buy USM before I read it cause I know it’s worth my hard earned money and it’s worth waiting for. The only other series that I treat like that is Daredevil. I support Bendis and Bru. :wonder:

…I read the first issues of Y: The Last Man and 100 Bullets and it seemed like they would be good reads. Any comments on them?

Wow I’m actually surprised that so many people on this board still “buy” comics (allegedly). Is it like taboo or against the rules to talk about scanning them or something?

Well, I certainly approve of the Bendis and BRU support. I’m hoping that when Spider-Man 3 comes out, Barnes & Noble will release another super hardcover like they did when Spider-Man 2 was released.

Y: The Last Man officially gained Y: The Last MAAAAAAAAN!!!11 status quite some time ago. It’s a must-read body of work and I’d probably say it’s the best or definitive Vertigo book of its generation. Heck, it’s just one of the best books in general. Y has it all: an wild high concept, tension-filled plots, drama, adventure, relationships, action, mindfucks, monkeys, some of the best-written dialogue in fiction, crisp art, and all sorts of intense subtextual content to give the stories extra lasting value.

100 Bullets is similarly excellent, but slightly more obtuse. I also don’t remember many monkeys in 100 Bullets, but that could just be due to my poor memory. 100 Bullets is really long-running and it’s the kind of deep writing that almost requires you to reread past chapters just to keep things straight in your mind.

And… Not 'cause you asked, but because you need to know… The entire 100 Bullets creative team produced Batman: Broken City, which has got to be one of the 10 greatest Batman stories ever. Read the TPB if you can.

We don’t talk about allegedly reading comics scans because no one here actually does that. Although if anyone did read illegally scanned comics, he should beware about discussing his taboo ways. Pained Auron and Sheng-Long are both card-carrying members of the Comics Protection Coalition (CPC) and they are always ready to sue someone.

Y: The Last Man is too fucking good. Keep reading it. You’ll start to love it with all the crazy plot twists. Also, since you’re gonna start to fall in love with Brian K. Vaughn you’ll definitely want to check out Dr. Strange: The Oath and Ex-Machina(which I need to start reading seriously).

I buy comic books. I spend about $40 every week. You can talk about scans and shit but to actually post them up is definitely illegal on this board.

Fair enough. I’ll just say that if it weren’t for scanned comics I probably wouldn’t even care about comics anymore outside of the movies and video games. But then I was able to find out about books like Fables and Blade of the Immortal among others and I just can’t get enough of comics now.

I still buy comics because I believe in supporting the things I like. It’s always the best way to get more of something and saying positive things about them here and sometimes Newsarama you never know, maybe more people will buy them and they will get more support so the artists and writers you like can continue doing what they do.

Besides, if no one bought comics there would be no comics and nothing for anyone to download so all of us who are spending our hard earned bucks are doing you a favor - BOW DOWN AND WORSHIP US! :badboy:

J/K. Seriously though I guess it depends on where you are at in life. My best friend lives at home with his parents and works for his uncle as a graphic artist. His uncle’s kind of a jerk, is loaded and goes off to Europe and Paris but only pays him when he feels like it. He literally can’t afford to buy comics anymore so that’s why he downloads comics all of the time so I don’t fault him for it too much. Back when he worked as a security guard he was buying lots of comics every week like the rest of us.

But yeah at the end of the day, downloading a comic for me just can’t replace the experience of having something in your hands that you can pick up and read whenever or the joy of putting away all your comics, coming across an old gem and sitting down and reading it again. Or even just the joy of being in a comic shop and getting into a nerd argument on whether or not Vision has a penis.

I mean, can’t speak for my financial future but I don’t think I’ll give up comics ever so long as I have some money. At best I would do what I did whenever times were tough, cut half the books I read and boil things down to the must haves.

Wudup everyone it’s srk’s quick learning comic noob anyways about the whole crisis shit ok heres what i understand to buy in chronological order

crisis on infinite earths:absolute edition
infinite crisis hardcover
omac project (i’m aware these 4 books are only softcover)
day of vengeance
rann thanagar war
villians united
ummm then finally wait for 52 hardcover lol?

Is that the correct chronological order of the must read crisis stuff?

Batman books i own:
dkr HC
year one HC
arkham asylum
long halloween
dark victory
gothic
hush absolute edition

I LOVED ALL OF THEM and i can’t decide which my favorite was it’s a 4way tie between year one, dkr, hush, n halloween So with that in mind the next batbooks i plan to buy in no particular order are:

killing joke
the cult
black n white vol1+2
child of dreams

Are they good/bad choices? any feedback would help also are there any must read shit i didn’t list as having or plan to have?

You should read the Infinite Crisis TPB last after all of the other books since that one leads straight into 52. Well, kind of leads straight into 52 since it mostly focuses on bit characters and not the big 3 - but Lex gets maximum exposure at the start of 52 and the end of IC. For the side stories I only read Villains United since that’s the only side story that interested me but I think you can read all of the Infinite side stories in whatever order without too many hassles since all of them were going on at the same time for the most part. (I think anyway not having read the other books…)

That’s a pretty good list of Bat books you have and are planning on getting so not much for me to add. Loved Killing Joke, Batman B&W 1 and 2 and Child of Dreams, never read Cult though.

Nope. There is the long way and the short way of reading Infinite Crisis. If you want the shortest possible way for maximum enjoyment than read the following in order:

Crisis on Infinite Earths (absolute or softcover…note that this is from the 80s, has a buttload of characters you’ve probably never heard of before, and is rather dense. This means that you will either like it initially, become very interested in finding out about all the characters and past events and go hunt down other trades from the past like the crisis on mult earth tpbs, and then later read COIE again and fall in deep love with it, or you will not like it due to the old school style of storytelling, too many characters to follow, etc and get frustrated and never read it again.

Identity Crisis (hardcover or softcover)- this is a great read by itself (for the most part) but is a huge story catalyst for everything that went on the next two years and into Infinite Crisis and therefore is a must-read.

Prelude to Infinite Crisis - this is a cheap softcover that reprints exerpts from different titles that spotlight little things in the run-up to Infinite Crisis. Much cheaper than tracking down the individual books.

The Omac Project (softcover) - This must be read first of the 4 because it starts with the 80 page story “Countdown to Infinite Crisis” which gets the ball rolling. After that you read the first 3 issues of Omac then put this tpb down to read:

Superman: Sacrifice (softcover) - this story was supposed to take place in Omac Project but it got to be too long so they made it a crossover instead. Sacrifice part 4 aka Omac 3.5 is actually also included in the Omac Project tpb so only get this if you want to read the preceding 3 issues.

<now you can pick up and finish omac project tpb>

Day of Vengeance (softcover) also includes the 3 part superman/shazam story that ties into IC

Rann-Thanagar War (softcover)

Villains United (softcover)

Infinite Crisis (hardcover)

Superman: Infinite Crisis (softcover) - necessary mainly due to IC Secret Files #1 which details the whole Superboy retcon punches thing (which isnt even in IC proper you haters). Should be read before, during, and after Infinite Crisis #5

Infinite Crisis Companion - collects the 4 tie-in specials, should be read after IC #3, #4, and #6

Also in regard to batman there is one bat-god among gods and his name is Matt Wagner. Track down all 4 Batman/Grendel’s, and Batman and the Monster Men. Also get the LOTDK tpb that collects James Robinson’s arc “Blades” and if you really want to be cool then pick up City of Crime which is the best and most under-appreciated bat-yarn in 15 years

is the ennis punisher series good? i’m think ing about buying the latest trade barracuda. yay or nay?

A resounding YAY.

PIcked up Ultimate Power 2.

Pretty decent issue actually. All out chaos between the characters of the Ultimate universe and the supreme power universe.

I was tempted to pick up Onslaught Reborn… but I figure I would check here to see if anyone else has read it yet and if it’s any good. Jeph Loeb hasn’t really given me a good story in a good while. Plus Rob Liefield is doing art and we all know how bad Liefield is…

I picked up:

Powers
Immortal Iron Fist
Captain America
Flash
52
Ultimate Power
Ultimate Vision
Green Lantern
Guy Gardner prestige format book
Batman
Superman/Batman

Read a little bit of the Infinity Gauntlet. It’s been ahwile. Don’t enjoy it anymore like you used to.

ANYWAYS, I gotta a question that needs to be answered and I don’t have details. A loooooong time ago I was reading a Batman that was part of another comic(the type that are back to back) and it was some kinda Bizzaro(?) type thing where it shows Joker(in his younger years) after killing his parents with a machett(sp) after dying his hair green and putting on white make-up with a green head band(something similar to the main character in Yakitate JaPan for you jap comic heads). The end of said comic had joker going to meet Batman and when he did Batman was like a huge fucked demon/beast sitting on a stone throne. It was obviously in another world but I wanted to know where I could get the back issue to this whole arc(if possible).

Anybody know what I’m talking about?

i really wanted to pick up the gardner book. i really did. but i just can’t stand chaykin’s terrible terrible artwork.

on a sad note, my store was out of iron fist. looks like ima have to go to metreon. hopefully i can find one there.

i picked up the variant to onslaught reborn. our of pure dumb luck

I will see your YAY and raise you a HUR.

That spells HURYAY which makes no sense, but that’s the closest I can get.

I completely avoid the comic book thread when I haven’t got around to reading some of the more popular, spoiler packed titles yet and I’ve been slow doing it this month.

And now I have this huge thread to go back through now.

But this bit is just ridiculous, right here.

Ya cut me deep, Ronin. CUT ME DEEP

Don’t forget, Clinty, you owe me your bookshelf full of TPBs. Warriors beat the Raptors a couple weeks back. But the Raptors have lost quite a few games, so I’m guessing they all run together. So I forgive you if you’ve forgotten.

By the way, have you received any pleasant surprises in your mailbox yet?

speaking of gardner, I also read GL Corps rebirth over thanksgiving and liked it alot, maybe more than gl rebirth, since guy >>>> hal. I still dont understand how kilowog came back from the dead though.

Also now that its over, anyone want to give their opinion on the ultimate galactus series? I think it is 3 tpb’s long, right?

Ennis Punisher is great.

So great I am unsure if I should give Fraction’s Punisher: War Journal a try for fear of it tainting my love of the character after what Ennis has done.
