PIcked up Civil War, Astonishing X-men, New Avengers and Squadron Supreme.

Civil War was good for the most part. Though I’m sure everyone will agree that the ending was somewhat anti-climatic.

New Avengers was a snorefest. I want my money back for buying this civil war arc.

AStonishing x-men. I’m kind of disapointed at the revelation in this issue. I won’t reveal what it is… but i’m sure there are some of you that feel the same way about these kinds of things.

Haven’t read squadron supreme yet.

Oh, BABEEEE!!!

NEXUS is coming back!!! The greatest comic of the '80s returns… Fuck all that New Teen Titans and Uncanny X-Men shit, NEXUS FOREVAAAA!!!

This news is 100% ginchy!

my eyes had multiple joygasms from seeing the art in cw 5. especially when you know who brings a banged up former pro reg hero to the lair.

I always wanted to get into Nexus but I read the first dark horse archives and I couldnt really get into it. The writing just seemed really elementary and jumbled. Does it get better? Maybe I should give some later issues a try.

Also someone want to post cw 5 spoilers?

taken from newsarama. be warned there are spoilers ahead. i don’t wanna hear any bitching if you read this by accident.

end

Sooo not looking in thread 'cuz I don’t have Civil War #5 just yet…

But just to shout out EC Segars Popeye Vol 1 I Yam What I Yam HC comes out today at $29.95 from Fantagraphics. It’s a collection of Segars’ old strips and will even include color Sunday pages! It’s the first of six volumes. This is the original Popeye, he’s nothing like the ones you’ve seen in cartoons and these old strips are hella funny and they still hold up today 70 years later! Anyway, check it out if you can.

Aaaand I’m out before I mistakingly read a Civil War 5 spoiler…

Oh yeah, samples of old Popeye comic strips I put up during the SRK Battle Poll lol! Popeye was god tier broken waaaaaay back then!

Wow, managed this long without reading a CW #5 spoiler, now I’m really out…(sano runst to the comic shop…)

For sure, Nexus gets better. The first three issues- the black and white issues- aren’t too deep in terms of storytelling. They just kind of set up the premise and show an example of Nexus’ power and mission. When the series becomes an ongoing, it gets pretty deep and intricate.

The characters are fleshed out very well and you just care. The Nexus universe is some kind of wild combo of superhero comic, space opera, science fiction, and pre-Vertigo Vertigo comic. It’s got a nice mix of action, philosophy, character relationships, and imaginative swashbuckling. The issues have some pretty good long-term plotting but most of the single issues are strong as well.

Some of the stories get pretty heady, and deal with stuff like moral ambiguity and shades of gray. Nexus’ whole deal with his power is that he’s compelled to hunt down and execute mass murderers. I remember there was this one story where he tracked down this harmless old lady who committed her murders a lifetime ago, and she spent a large portion of her life trying to make amends. So Nexus had to decide what he was gonna do, and eventually they had a face-off.

The thing with Nexus is that the creators were years ahead of their time. They started it in the early '80s and even if you take it out of the context of its era, I still think it holds up well. It’s nice to read fun comics that are also actually about something, and make you think a bit. I remember you said you like Grendel, so I’m pretty sure you’d like Nexus if you read it some more. Both of those comics have a level of craft that a lot of people today can’t match.

Plus… The Dude’s artwork is just top tier. The Dude is like Jack Kirby and John Buscema spliced and on mad crack. Fanciful character designs, inspired tech designs, superb layouts, a great eye for depicting genuine emotion- The Dude is the complete package.

I am now going to avoid this thread until I have a chance to read the new Civil War and Astonishing for myself.

Had a pretty good day on Wednesday buying funny books.

First I went to the dinky spot around my job to by my weekly comics since the weather was hella crappy and I didn’t want to go deeper into New York. They didn’t have the Popeye book or the new Read or Die manga that the TV anime is based on. So I went to Midtown comics. They didn’t have the Popeye book - they just sold out - but they did have the Read or Die manga, but the line to buy books was long, so I headed over to Forbidden Planet and they had the Popeye book, and while I was there J.Torres of Teen Titans Go! (the TT comic based on the cartoon) was there signing comics!

So first I thanked him for the issue that had Wonder Girl in it, saying that it was great for the fans. I asked him how is it like working with Murakami and Torres said he’s a really great guy. He said that when they had Murakami draw Wonder Girl for the cover Murakami asked them how she should look and they were all like, “You ARE the Teen Titans cartoon and you’re asking us?” So they told him to design Wonder Girl as if she was appearing on the cartoon. So that outfit she wore in Teen Titans Go! is from Murakami himself! :nunchuk:

Then I asked him the obvious, if he happens to know if they are going to make anymore straight to video TT cartoons. He said he doesn’t see why not, Murakami and crew want to but it depends on how well TT Trouble in Tokyo sells. Torres said that the reason the cartoon got canceled was stupid, Cartoon Network got new bosses and they wanted to change things and do things their own way so they got rid of TT, a top rated show just to change things. I told him how TT is my favorite of the WB/DC shows, (still love the other shows but I like how TT is so different) said “At least we still have the comics!” and I moved on. J.Torres was really nice, signed the third GN for me of Titans Go! since I already had the other two before.

And Forbidden was sold out of Read or Die! Ack! I haven’t had time to head back to Midtown just yet, guess that will have to be next week… oh well, still a fun day.

Now on to business, Civil War spoileroonies (P.S. GO READ CIVIL WAR!), Iron Man spoiler(VILLAIN OF THE YEAR!) minor 52 spoiler, highlight to view -

Civil War - Great issue but I will have to say the thing that most upset me was that we saw the cover months ago and the events didn’t play out like the cover. Spidey was only jumped by two villains, not a posse. And the reveal of who was pointing the gun at him… c’mon, Punisher? Anyone could of figured that out! Though in retrospect Punisher prolly couldn’t own GG, Venom, Bullseye all at once, etc. So I say strong issue, but I wish that Marvel didn’t leak that cover soooo early is all since it was a little misleading.

Now this is my first Iron Man comic since CW started. Let me get this straight. So… Iron Man blew up an Airliner, killed even more people than the New Warriors’ event and if this news ever got out he’d be the reason for Regestration? IRON MAN IS THE MAN! DOCTOR DOOM GOT NOTHIN’ ON BIG FAT JERKY JERK STARK HIS VILLAINY KNOWS NO BOUNDS!

That drawing in 52 in the Book of Sin of Bat Woman dying was sick! I want a Book of Sin too damn it!

Shout out to New Avengers this week which was also groovy.

Oh and the Popeye book owns, but Popeye sure looks ugly in his first appearances. This book is HUGE! It’s almost the size of those Alex Ross / Paul Dini books, only hard cover, kick ass! Strips are still funny as hell. They advertised the next book and they said it will be out… in Fall 2007? One book a year and there’s six in total? Well blow me down! Argargargargarg! Seriously, I’m hoping they speed this process up a bit…

Picked up Y the Last Man Volume 8. Also picked up Amazing Spider-man and Street Fighter.

Wizard Magazine announced the winners of their 2006 awards. Very Marvel dominated. Here they are along with some of my thoughts.

Man of the year: Joe Quesada - Seeing as how Joe Q scrapped Marvel’s initially gameplan for the year of 2006 and 2007 in order to incorporate Civil War, and seeing as how Civil War was a success… I’d say he deserves this spot.
Event of the year: Civil War - is anyone not reading this event?
Editor of the year: Tom Brevoort - I don’t see how they can award an editor. Do they actually check the non-edited versions of the story?
Artist of the year: Steve McNiven - Definitely. I don’t think anyone else could have pulled off Civil War as well as he did.
Single Issue of the year: New Avengers #22 - I didn’t enjoy any of the issues in the Civil War New Avengers arc.
Breakout Talent of the year: Charlie Huston - I haven’t read Moon Knight. Anybody?
Boldest move of the year: 52 - I would have thought unmasking Spider-man was the boldest move of the year
Writer of the year: Brian K Vaughan - I only read Y the last man, and it’s very very goood.
Book of the year: Daredevil - I haven’t read the book… but I’m sure everyone here loves Brubaker’s work.
Hero of the year: Superman - Has he actually done anything ?
Cover Artist of the year: J.G Jones - Drawing a good cover each week for the 52 series is hard work. Definitely deserves it.
Villain of the year: The Governor - don’t know him
Mini Series of the year: B.P.R.D: The Universal Machine - Didn’t read it.
Movie of the year: The Descent - haven’t seen it
Tv show of the year: Lost - Agree. Show is currently my favorite on the tube right now.
Animated series of the year: JLU - I can’t believe they cancelled this show. ARGH
Video game of the year: Marvel Ultimate Alliance - Agree… though the number of Comic book video games is very limited.
DVD of the year: Superman: the ultimate collector’s edition box set - I’m not sure if I’d get this. Superman Returns wasn’t anything spectacular.
Collection of the year: Absolute Kingdom Come - I have the original Kingdom Come. I don’t think i’ll get this.

52 was the boldest gimmick of the year if anything. But yeah, unmasking Spidey should have taken that award.

And Brian K. Vaughan winning writer of the year? Oh…wait…he’s writing a Marvel book and he did write Ultimate Xmen for a bit. Nobody really reads Y The Last Man except for me, box and 10 other people.

Daredevil is the book of the past 3 years. It’s the only real good Marvel book other than Captain America nowadays.

lol @ Superman for hero of the year. He hasn’t done anything but get his ass kicked by Superboy Prime and watch Earth 2 Superman die.

Yeah, so I started out collecting the Civil War series (tie-ins and sidebooks included), but then got REALLY busy with life. I collected the first month of books, then nothing since then.

So, because I’ve missed so much, and I really don’t feel like hunting down everything now, would it be wise to wait a couple months and get all of the Civil War TPBs? I know the “Road to Civil War” TPB is coming in Feb., with other Civil War TPBs coming out soon after that.

My question is, would it be better to get the individual comics now, or wait until the TPBs. I’m leaing towards the TPB route, but sometimes the TPB end up with altered content, etc…

  1. Moon Knight is amazing.

  2. No, no he hasn’t.

  3. A cover a week ? Are they awesome ? I think James Jean should win this award until he dies. James Jean > everyone in terms of covers.

  4. If it’s the descent I am thinking of, jesus, that movie was HORRIBLE. http://www.carinfrog.com/descentreview.htm

I’m reallllly late to the game, but Identity Crisis is one amazing piece of work. I never expected such mature themes of out DC. I guess I’m still stuck in 1991.

That’s a strange pick. Which one was that? The Captain America one? It was good but Wizard is obviously wack. All Star Superman #1 or Daredevil #82 would have been more worthy. Or maybe a random issue of Solo or Local. I thought Gotham Central #40 was an exceptional finale to the most underrated DC universe comic.

I haven’t read much Moon Knight, either. I tried but I got bored and the art doesn’t interest me. Didn’t Huston write The Ultimates Annual #2? I think I read that. It was average.

I agree, unmasking Spidey is somehow bolder than doing a weekly comic. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s just 'cause I hate 52.

Y: The Last MAAAAAAAAN!!!1, Ex MACHINAAAAA!!!1, RUNAWAAAAYS!!1, and Pride of BAAAAGHDAD!!11 and Dr. Strange

BKV deserves a raise.

All Star Superman. Also, he was in a movie. Personally, I think Superman Returns is the best superhero movie ever. I don’t know many other people who’d agree with me though. I should probably feel like a whore if Wizard agrees with me, though. Damn them.

He does deserve recognition for his output. Bryan Hitch and J. Cassaday have been doing great covers, too. Hitchy even made Iron Spidey look cool. And Ladronn’s covers for Elephantmen and Hulk are really good. His Hulk covers always make me pick up the issue and flip through it before I decide not to buy it.

And like VSlashy said, James Jean always rocks.

I have no idea who he is, either. At least they didn’t say Superboy-Prime.

Wow. Wizard’s trying to boost their credibility by mentioning a Dark Horse book. Well, Hellboy and Guy Davis could always use the PR boost. I support that.

Oh yeah, and I’ll take Veronica Mars over Lost any day.

zephy : NA 22 is the luke cage issue. easily the best NA tie in. this one actually made me rethink my hatred of bendis. but then i remembered HoM and i hated him again.

the governor is the umm governor of the town where rick, michone, and glenn are in WE ARE THE WALKING DEAD!!!. he is one psycho bastard. i dont know about villain of the year but he is up there.

whoever is not reading moon knight needs to start right away. no questions asked. youw ill be doing yourself a huge favor if you read it. someone link me to the hitchy iron spidey pic.

I finished up reading Transmetropolitain a few months ago, highly recomended if you havn’t picked it up yet. Ellis realy is imo one of the best writers out there atm when he’s given the freedom to do what he wants.

Any one reading The Walking Dead btw? Its probably the most realistic take on zombies i’ve ever read/seen/watched/played.

How does the Wizard awards work? voted by fans?

Daredevil beat out Captain America as a better book by Brubaker? Really? Oh and Brubaker also promised better fight scenes in his Daredevil run but the ones he did so far are pretty dissappointing :/. I think it falls on Lark but it was Brubaker who promised it in the first place, still a good book though…Not Punisher MAX good (which bests Daredevil by a huge margin IMO) but eh…whatever.

BKV over Brubaker as best writer though? I guess it was Pride of Baghdad that tipped it into his favor.

Ouch. Superman Returns snubbed. The Descent was decent but I can’t believe Wizard fans picked it over Superman Returns.

Charlie Huston as breakout talent of the year? Moon Knight was that popular eh? I dunno, it was too verbose for my taste. I know he was a novelist before this but damn, this is a different medium now. The breakdowns were sometimes confusing in that book too, but then that might fall on Hitch, hard to get a sense of how Huston wrote the script with only one title as a reference.

New Avengers #22 as single story of the year? It didn’t really standout for me, but then again nothing else comes to mind right now. It was nice looking though. Why isn’t Marvel using Leinil Yu as much when they got him exclusively now? Are they gonna continue giving him little pieces here and there until Damon Lindelloff finally decides to work on Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk again? Although I realize Damon Lindeloff is too busy stretching what little premise he has on Lost because after all, JJ Abrams is involved in that which means they don’t know where to take the show now (I’ve learned my lesson from previous JJ Abrams shows).

The latest NA issue with a disgruntled Stark employee was pretty good too. Although I’m pro-reg, the anti-reg points brought up in NA were very well done. Bendis has been using the theme of Stark’s lack of personal connection with other people in justifying why Stark was too quick to be pro-reg and it came out really well in NA #22 (Cage/Jessica points out his lack of foresight for the human condition) and in the latest issue (the disgruntled employee accusses Stark of hiding behind his armor instead of facing people.)

I wish Civil War frontline was like this. I don’t even know why I buy that one. Jenkins dissappoints me in that plus the art is sub-par in Frontline. Also, it always ends with some ridiculously ham-fisted anti-registration nonsense about the parallels of different civil wars in history and 616’s.

oh c’mon! Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.

…plus the whole vertigo branching out and all.

+1 for Veronica Mars

leinil yu is the new regular artist for NA starting with the issue after the bendis/maleev hawkeye and wanda special

Ahhh. So “The Governor” is the prick in The Walking Dead (“We are the WAAALKING DEAD!!!11”?). Somehow I never realized that was his name. In my head, I just thought of him as Mutilation Man. I suppose Wizard had to throw a bone to Image.

Here’s a picture of Hitchy’s Iron Spidey cover.

I liked that Luke Cage New Avengers issue. Actually, I’ve liked all of the NA Civil War issues. They are so much better than that garbage Collective crap. The introspective tone of the past few NA issues is more suited to Bendis’ strengths as a writer. I think the weakest one was the Spider-Woman issue, but even that was enjoyable thanks to the nice art. But issue of the year? Whatever, it’s just Wizard. Their sole purpose in life is to make me feel like a smart and discerning reader.

You didn’t like the fight scenes in Daredevil? What about the part when Matt beat up a gang of random prison hardasses in a deserted room? How about Frank Castle calmly beating down a random prisoner in the mess hall? That whole prison riot scene didn’t impress you? Matt jumping over a point blank Bullseye shotgun blast to Wilson Fisk’s kneecap didn’t get your dick hard or something? Personally, I creamed myself when Danny Rand made his iron fist.

But I guess I can’t argue with Captain America whooping on terrorists on a moving subway, anti-helicopter SHIELD SLASH! included. Or with Iron Man, Falcon, and Cap fighting a hundred lackeys and one giant robot in a warehouse. Or Cap and Union Jack punching Nazis in the face. I like it when Nazis get punched in the face.

I think my favorite scene in Captain America is the WWII flashback of “He was doing what he was trained to do… And he was highly trained.” Bucky the badass slitting Nazi throats is too good. And then there was that part where Bucky and Cap beat up a tank. Michael Lark drew those tasty parts.

There have been a few novelists trying their hand at comics writing lately, and all this Charlie Huston talk reminds me that I just read Hellblazer: Empathy Is The Enemy, by Denise Mina. That was a very impressive story. I love how anyone can start reading almost any random Hellblazer issue and just get a nice sense of satisfaction. Empathy Is The Enemy even made some nice references to the Garth Ennis era, too. It was a complete Hellblazer story. I don’t know if it’s as iconic a story as Dangerous Habits or All His Engines, but it’s damn good and one of the best TPBs I’ve read all year.
