I’ve been thinking a lot about this, and I figure I should give my input.
Honestly Jebailey, I care about the Orlando community getting better at Super. At the same time, I’d like it if the Orlando community could be more versatile by way of playing a few different games, considering that for a long time Super was the only game anyone cared to play somewhat seriously. Clearly these two desires clash, but I think both sides of the coin deserve some consideration.
You, Leland, and Chris are the three remaining consistent Super players in Orlando because the three of you have lots of experience, natural talent, and pure dedication to the game. But of the three of you (at least until very recently), Leland was the only person who would semi-consistently come out to get-togethers within the community, and only if he wasn’t working or busy otherwise. I’m legitimately happy to hear that Torrin is resuming hosting ranbats, because frankly this community as a competitive community is on the verge of failing. Not to say that we have bad players (because we don’t), but we don’t create nearly enough opportunities for ourselves to learn from each other and continue to make real efforts of improvement (at least not in my opinion). My internet connection for playing Super online is total garbage, so my only time for experience comes from playing local people. Which is great, but it massively dilutes the amount of variety required for anyone to truly improve. At some point in time, you have to learn how to play against and learn from different people who have different skills.
Not intending to sound salty, and correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think the Super community in Orlando is well-fostered anymore. Ever since CEO I feel like I’ve actually been declining as a player, and while many (even myself) would be tempted to say that’s just a product of my own mind, I believe it to be true from a purely objective standpoint. I’ve barely learned anything new, and I’m sure the same could be said for a lot of players here. Meanwhile Tampa’s players seem to be improving every time I watch them play, and it’s probably because they have a better sense of community and organization.
Jebailey, I’m not going to say you haven’t been trying to promote a better Super community here in Orlando, because I would be an idiot if I said that. But if you really want to keep Tampa from handing us our asses (a point with which I agree), then somehow the community needs to be inspired to want to do just that. We need encouragement. We need support. For all I know maybe we need two or three people in the Orlando community to get everybody together and be professors for a class on how to not suck at SSF4.
I really want to get better at Super, somehow. And I know for a fact there’s a lot holding me back. But I think at least in some way, the whole Orlando community is being held back. And I, for one, would like to find some way to fix it.
