One man’s hate of homosexuality isn’t Islamic extremism, stop acting like this is specific to Islam, it’s pretty specific to all fundamentalist modern religions. Him being Muslim only matters because we want it to matter, so it fits an agenda. This was an act of hate perpetrated by a single person, not by a religion, not by a faith. His faith, whatever that was, may have informed his hate, but it was his hate, not his love of his faith, that guided him in this actions. I don’t care if he’s claiming ISIS in a message, I don’t care about any of that because there are MILLIONS of Islamic individuals who don’t go on killing sprees every single day. Even fundamentalist ones. There are people of all faiths who do, but it’s only specifically when it’s an Islamic person do we call it out. That’s what they mean when they say Islamophobia. The right is politicizing his religion just as the left is politicizing the use of guns. The fact remains that there is an agenda of intolerance perpetrated by factions in our government that impede acceptance and give a subtle nod to intolerance against groups of people. We have people of power in our government who build entire careers on dehumanizing the LGTB community, making them an enemy. We can’t claim “Oh it’s Islam…” when it’s Christianity too. You don’t get to call a white Christian killer a “troubled individual” but an Islamic killer an “Islamic terrorist” - they are both the same thing exactly. We live in language, it’s what defines our culture and society. It’s why we are where we are in the evolutionary ladder. Language matters, and even subtle attacks on groups, things that seem benign inform more extreme views. The left isn’t protecting a killer because he of the Islamic faith, they are protecting the millions of others of that faith who feel just as disgusted by these acts as everyone else. Given how many people in america own guns and are rabidly pro gun, you’d expect there to be less shootings. Instead we have a mass shooting every damn day. I think most lefties are actually against discrimination of any group of people, they just tend to speak up for those marginalized by society. Muslims have been marginalized in this country because of the acts of a few. So, we tend to speak up because no one needs to speak up for the Christians, they already have tons of social protections in place in this country. Now, we do attack anyone who preaches intolerance for a grup. If a Muslim had power in this country and was speaking up for marginalizing a group, we, as lefties, would call it out. There’s a difference between acting as a voice for the marginalized and protecting a group over another.

Westboro baptist church has never gone on a killing spree of homosexuals, as terrible of human beings as they are. Also look at the broader context of islam. Even outside of radical islam, women are subjugated, and homosexuals is still a zero tolerance policy. With arabic muslims, the predominant ethnic group of the radical islamic groups, being the worst offenders of this by far. Even in indonesia and turkey homosexuals face much pushback, and those are the poster child countries for moderate islam.
