People usually don’t do a 120 mph in a residential on a sunday night, usually. Most of us will do maybe 80 or 90 on 65mph stretch of highway. Maybe we’ll do 100 or even 120. I don’t have a drawer full of weed right now because it’s illegal(I live at home; w/e, I don’t have to pay rent).
The reason why we should be restricting gun sales is to make it harder, not impossible, but harder to get guns. Trevor Noah pointed out something kind of fucked up. Obama has held 14 speeches commenting on the semiregular national tragedy of gun violence. Obama has held 11 state dinners. Not to mention that the ever perennial Onion headline, “‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens”.
So we have to do something.
The idea here isn’t to go to absolute zero for gun deaths. France has tough gun regulations but they still got shot up last year and the year before that. But that was two incidents. By people with serious ties to major terrorist groups.
He bought his guns legally. If he wanted to wound or kill 103 people without the gun, he’d either have to set the place on fire(which, frankly, was a thing that happened to gay bars for a time), or use explosives. Both of which require an incredible amount of risk and are much harder to do than just opening fire. We all want to laugh at the guy who blew his nuts off by trying to smuggle explosives in his undies, but he was a pro. The guy who set up his bomb was a pro. It was TATP. It’s not easy to make and it’s not easy to use. Timothy McVeigh was kind of an outlier here. Not only that, but he had Terry Nichols help too to build the damned thing.
Again, he bought his guns legally. Plus it’s easy to bootleg whisky, beer, heroin, weed, pills, etc. It’s harder to smuggle pistols and rifles.
Making abortions illegal has lead a to a boom in both back alley abortions but also unwanted children. It’s easier to try to self terminate a pregnancy than it is to smuggle a gun, too, btw.
So then things like background checks shouldn’t be a problem and ammo registration shouldn’t be a problem. Granted, ideally, we could have a total rewrite of the 2nd Amendment. We can stop all our arguing about the founders intent on the 2nd Amendment when we also realize that they gave us the mechanism to clear up what something in the constitution means. But I don’t think we’ll ever actually do that.
As a queer person, I’d rather not have to pack heat myself or have to keep an eye out for people who want me killed because I really don’t care about what’s in someone’s pants before I have sex with them.
People died. It’s already a social justice issue. People died, conspicuously, in a place where being part of a suspect classification(that is, the nature of the selection is suspicious, not the group themselves) meets. Guy was reportedly a regular, and was sending creepy shit on Tinder. So while correlation does not imply causation, it does scream, “HEY GO LOOK AT THAT THING.”
It was terrorism. He killed a bunch of people and wounded nearly as many as he killed. Terrorism just doesn’t mean brown people in turbans misreading the Quran or the IRA carbombing some Northern Irish WASPs. It means any time terror is used to shape the political landscape. Sometimes terrorism and freedom fighting are two phrases for the same thing. Life is tough sometimes.
Also, he did reportedly make a statement declaring his allegiance to the Islamic State. But he also supposedly supported Hezbollah. Hezbollah is Shi’a. IS is Sunni. So he doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about. IS is one way with it’s communication outreach. He can sit on twitter and facebook and read all he wants about the new Caliphate and think, “gee, that sounds like a great way to vent my internalized homophobia.”
Let’s not. Let’s fix a problem that is largely unique to America.
Sometimes 103 people get shot. Difference is, forest fires happen on nearly every other land mass too, and without this stark regularity. Well with global climate change, that too might change.
Definitely not an appropriate time to attack her about that, but damn, pwnd.
What purpose does it serve at that moment to attack someone trying to help do good in the moment? We know exactly what purpose it serves. Its to try to turn the focus of attention on homophobia. White homophobia at that, that is obviously done by the religious in this country. Mainly christians (sorry to generalize).
How heartless is cooper though to take the moment to be like, hey, youre a fucking terrible person also in the midst of this terrible event that i know youre helping out on.
Razor, you gotta get out of east coast man. The hipsters are fucking your brain up bruh.
No, stop it. Shes saying that since we have almost as many guns as we have people, and considering how stupid america is. We actually have a pretty on par number of gun related crimes to be expected. Nothing too outrageous.
The funny thing is, typically leftist want to take away guns, and or severely diminish the ability to get them, but wont address the underlying issues of poverty, lack of quality education, ect… in the neighborhoods where these crimes happen the most. To mention again, these swanky non violent liberal democrats have nothing to say when my people are murdering each other at ridiculous rates in parts of the country they dont give a fuck about. Something like this happens, and all hell breaks loose.
There is a reason that this shit (gun violence) happens in flint michigan, and not in the swanky areas of montgomery county, maryland.
If we had better help for battered women across the country, where they could safely escape from their estranged husbands/boyfriends/girlfriends would be great too. If we could do more as a nation to make sure people are encouraged to be more independent, and avoid toxic relationships, and situations that could harm them.
**Quite honestly, while there are some extremist who think we should have no guns, the USA hasnt bothered trying to fix or assist in the issues that lead to a lot of this gun violence. **
However, making it legal, but covered in red tape will effectively make weapons attainable for law abiding citizens, and impossible for criminals, the mentally ill, and suspected terrorists.
No one on the left is really “trying to take the gunz away”
They just want some systems in place so events like this don’t happen, or we can at least get some kind of warning.
There were so many warning signs about this dude that could have prevented this besides “taking guns away from everyone”
-he was on the terror watch list, twice.
-interviewed by FBI multiple times in connections to terrorism
domestic abuser
described as “mentally ill” by family and friends
made threats of violence around co-workers
-bought multiple guns and also ATTEMPTED TO BUY MILITARY GRADE BODY ARMOR all within a 3 day period.
How about a system that puts a big ole red flag on you if you buy a ridiculous amount of guns, ammo, and ARMOR in a short period of time? They already have this in place if you try to buy large quantities of materials to make bombs. (this has stopped multiple attacks).
Other ideas:
A) if you want to say this is a mental health issue (it partly is), then please support further expansion of mandatory health insurance like the ACA (or even single payer). Then, you can mandate routine mental health checkups as a part of any routine physical. Then, those mental health systems can be made a part of our universal background checks. If you have severe mental illness, you shouldn’t be able to buy a gun. If you can’t see, you can’t get a driver’s license. Several of these tragedies could have prevented WITH THE SYSTEMS WE ALREADY HAVE IN PLACE, if these systems could talk to each other. This would also curb suicides with guns.
B ) There also needs to be universal licensure of weapons, with different grades for different levels of weapons and ammo. Generally speaking: the less mass lethality, less concealability, less range, and less ammo capacity, the easier it is to get a license for. No one is clamoring to take away shotguns with birdshot or bolt action no scope rifles. But an AR-15? Just think of the dumbest kid in your high school class. Now imagine someone handing that kid an AR-15 when they turned 18. Scary huh? At the highest levels, you would need to show cause and need, and have references to obtain weapons. My idea that these would be the stuff that is almost illegal/is illegal now. **this license should be titled “militia membership” **
C) 500% tax on ammunition. Ammo sold and used at a range or in a hunting reserve is exempt from this tax, provided the shells/casings/unused ammo are returned. This ammo is all RFID’d to the specific place of business. Outright ban on Armor piercing ammo. The 2nd amendment doesn’t give you the right to ammo at all, much less cheap ammo.
D) Make it illegal to purchase guns on credit cards. Push debit transactions. Cash has an additional tax.
E) Tax “dumb” guns. Do not tax “smart” guns that use handprint ID, magnet locks, RFID bullets and other such technologies that the NRA is shitting themselves over.
F) Ban private sales between un-related citizens. A licensed gun dealer must be present to register the sale and conduct a background check.
G) you will fail a background check if:
[] ex felon
[] history of mental illness
[] domestic abuser
[] restraining order
[] no fly list
[] terrorist ties
[] not a U.S. citizen
[] buy too many guns in a short time
[] delinquent on taxes
[] dishonorably discharged from military/police
H) No questions asked gun buybacks in every state.
We’ve tried this wild west way of handling guns.
Can we at least try another way?
Everyone is afraid of some sort of slippery slope, but we HAVE to try something.
You cant continue to curb education in this country, continue your nonsense war on drugs that only fuels criminal activity, federally almost ignore the down and out in this country, while you buy tanks for the army they dont want and dont need, and expect change.
Im over simplifying things, but id rather see cuts and adjustments in our federal government that go to middle and high school education in poorer neighborhoods. Id rather see money funneled to battered woman homes and foster homes to make sure people in certain situations can get right. Id love to see a leader of the free world who makes speeches about personal responsibility, integrity, morals, and vigilance towards what is right and fair for all. I’d love for this bullshit war on drugs to cease. Id love to not have to have lost so many hundreds of thousands of jobs to foreign countries.
The list goes on. So when we’re talking gun violence in america, i say address the underlying issues first in a purposeful way, and stop bullshitting. I bet once you address those issues, we catch up to the rest of the world with having very little gun violence, and you just have law abiding citizens who own guns for protection and hobby.
Gun control does work. Less guns means less gun crime. Which is what I was saying and hinting st.
You are right that economic problems do need to be solved and that for a whole host of really great reasons, it needs to be done. It would improve so much in our lives. Increase the minimum wage, uniformally fund and support education, end the school to prison pipeline, increase access to welfare so parents can be home more of the time to support their kids, work on reducing systemic racism and sexism in all industries, etc. all wildly important.
Those systems don’t exist, and to create them requires you to violate the rights of all Americans, not just psychos.
If you mean the no Fly list, anyone can be out on it. Ted Kennedy was on it.
With no evidence found. He received due process, as would you or I.
Reports mean nothing unless made official. If you’re mentally defective or have been charged with threats of violence, you will fail a NICS check. If you feel that threatened, get a restraining order. That will also make you fail a background check.

he was a licensed security worker. All too easy to just claim it was for his job. Anders Brevik used his job as a farmer to get his rifles, by the way.
Define “ridiculous”. If I buy a rifle, a shotgun, a pistol and ammo, then I have everything I need for either a mass shooting, or for a three-gun competition.

I won’t comment on US health insurance as I don’t know the system. However, your suicide rate is actually average amongst the rest of the world. Getting rid of guns won’t reduce them, there is absolutely no correlation between guns and suicide rate.
All guns are lethal. What you’re proposing is Australian-level regulation, which demonstrably didn’t affect the overall murder rate.
You don’t “need” to own a gun. Period. No, not even farmers NEED guns, there are other less efficient ways of crop protection. It is your constitutional right, so long as you can prove yourself capable of being responsible.
Federal Government doesn’t have the power to impose these kinds of taxes, and States can just ignore them. Nevermind this would require the Government to try and force all ammo makers to adopt RFID. Expect heavy resistance due to it not being feasible economically.
Not a power that the Federal Government has.
Smart guns are unreliable and can be manipulated to do evil since they run on circuitry and software.
Not entirely opposed to this one.
Most of these are already on the NICS check. No Fly List means that people can be denied simply if someone decides to a random person to the list. It’s happened.
Define too many guns.
Tax delinquecy won’t mean shit in Texas where there’s no income tax

Only if you propose an alternative that fits within existing Government powers.
Arguably, that something would instead be done about radicals, not guns. 80 million people don’t deserved to be punished for one psycho’s actions.
minorities exist only in London according to your and thurst sources when you shit on crucades. Their gangs, or whatever is it they have are in no way on the same level of stupid as American ones too. Even when they had guns available, they didn’t have the same level of violence that America had with its gangs.
Besides the context behind his number, 3.7 against everybody elses less than 1 is that gangs inflate that number to ridiculous proportions.
Listen to what you’re saying. Shes out there mourning their deaths, helping assist in any help they need when it comes to visiting, helping in exposing a funeral home that was gouging prices, and cooper finds it an appropriate time to grill her about gay marriage. If she was this truly hateful disgusting person that he wants her to be, she would be doing her bare minimum. I don’t agree with the stupidity of that nonsense about apposing gay marriage in Florida, but you can be against gay marriage without spitefully hating gay people.
He almost in a weird way tried to equate her saying its an attack on Floridians values (gay marriage) to helping attribute to the anti homosexual culture, and nature of this shooting.
I’m quite frankly appalled that even in your non troll state, you cant see how inappropriate that is.
**I don’t believe transgenders are genetically predisposed to be that way (zero evidence of that), or believe that mutilating your body with surgery is good for you because you think you’re a man or woman, but that doesn’t mean i would ever be happy to see a mass murder of them. If i was even publicly open about that statement, it would be shameful for someone to come up to me an suggest im some piece of shit hypocrite taking advantage of a horrible situation because im helping out. **
@Raz0r thats whats wrong with the overly liberal, or overly conservative mind in this country. It has to be black or white. One thing has to equal another. So when someone is like, im opposed to gay marriage, they HAVE TO hate gay people, and media can easily help paint that picture.
There is no way she could oppose gay marriage, and still have sympathy for human life. Peoples sons and daughters who were needlessly gunned down. Thats ridiculous as shit to a legitimately rational mind.
