Read your history books. Prohibition should have taught you something. Even if you made it completely illegal to have ANY kind of gun, all you’re going to do is create a thriving underworld that gangs, mobsters, and cartels will immediately jump on. The laws of supply and demand do not change even if you make something illegal, you just change who makes it, how it gets to you, and who profits from it.
Furthermore, the vast majority of gun owners never do anything like this. They keep the guns in their personal collections, shoot them at the firing range, hunt, etc. If you want to make the case that guns are dangerous pieces of technology that end lives, well you could easily make the same argument for automobiles which kill way more people than guns. And unless you want to live in a future like Demolition Man, saying something is harmful or dangerous shouldn’t automatically give anyone the right to ban it.
And please, get the fuck over the semantics of whether this is a hate crime against homosexuals or a terrorist act. This really comes down to motive of the shooter, and no one really knows that but him. It might even be both, who knows. It doesn’t change the fact that people are now dead.
The reason motive is so damn important for people is because that’s how the public is going to be pushed to react.
If it’s a hate crime, it becomes a social justice issue. But I really don’t think pointing fingers and blaming others for systemic oppression is going to prevent such acts from happening again. All that’s going to do is further divide people.
If it’s terrorism, we get to go bomb people. But I really don’t think sending our military (who is made up of mostly poor people) into a meat grinder halfway across the world to make craters in the sand is going to prevent this either. All that’s going to do is give more taxpayer money to the military industrial complex and get people on both sides killed.
Here’s a thought: let’s do nothing. Let’s chalk this up to an unfortunate by product of freedom. Most people will not use their freedom to irrationally hate others. Most people will not use their freedom of gun access to shoot innocent people.
