I realize I’m more or less a no-name of obscurity around here these days, but I’ve been watching with the ladder system ideas and implementation. For what it’s worth, I approve of this system. Sure, there may be better players than what you see in the ladder, but I’ve always thought of the point in a ladder being… well… pretty much what G_Effect said: A way to encourage competition, rivalry, and presence in the scene.
Frankly, the only reason I haven’t been commenting on the ladder system stuff (or much of anything in the PDX section) is because I have no means to be active in the scene. No car. I live in Vancouver. Public transit sucks terribly for gathering involvement.
Still, I like this system, as well as pretty much anything that encourages the leveling up of the community, so I thought I’d say so.
^ I actually talked to Yangsing about you the other day since you live in WA. We carpool to sessions every week. As long you can throw down on some gas you are welcome to ride with us. It makes it cheaper for us plus the more competition the better.

Right now, I think the thread title is misleading, in my opinion it cannot be called a top players thread because it does not encompass all of Oregon’s players.
Example, it would be like me setting up a ladder in Salem, doing it on Saturday nights out in South Salem in a bar, and then knowing that Kwyjibo nor Ronnicle can participate, me calling is Salems Top Player Ladder. I’m just using it as an example, but you see where I’m coming from. It should just be Portland Ladder Ranking System then call it like Panda and G-Effects or something so that it separates it from the others like K’s and Fatbear’s system. Not to mention I’m sure there are some really good SF4 players down in Corvallis and Eugene that can’t make it up to PDX.
This system is a ladder for Portland, simple as that. Its not a top players ladder, just a ladder.
Okay, we all know BBH is top and Fatbear is top. BBH was over at Fatbears house and it was all good. TBH, why do they need to join and challenge people? I’m pretty sure they have things to do outside of throwing challenges out and then playing the matches.
Portland’s complaints about the ranking system are all the same and it comes down to this, who should get what ranking and who should get the points behind it. Its the same shit now, one person makes the rankings, others don’t agree, it’s whatever whatever.
I’ll be straight up honest. I believe that Fatbear’s system is the most legit. Its been proven to work, and it is a strong system.
Angel, Jetay does have a point, when you talk about inspiring competition, when only 4 or 5 challenges, that have been publicly announced on SRK, have been shown in what…a month or so? I don’t really know how to truly take that as breeding competition, granted it isn’t summer and we all have lives, but Jetay does have a point.
And no, it will not guarantee to accurately rank everyone. It MIGHT accurately rank everyone, but there is no guarantee. I mean look at Random Bison at Tilt, comes in and just walks up and takes money. No ones ever heard of him so no one really knows.
Will I join the ladder? maybe, but probably not because I know how I am and if I don’t really care about a match I just won’t play it. I already know how I want to level up and I know how I’m going to do it. After SuperNCR, I learned a lot about things that I need to do and things that I’m doing wrong. That’s the competitive fire that I needed.
Also, it needs to be said, in regards to the PDX community being divided. That was me that said it and you know I’m right.

its getting really hard to see your point of view man, tbh it sounds like your taking this more serious then the people actually participating in it. dont quote me and say “why would i take this ______ serious?” im talking about the sheer effort you put into posting in here, i think you’ve posted more about this ladder then you did in your own thread when you were hosting.
these numbers are only as special as you make them, there is no reason to come in here and try to tell people what they deserve. i think the real matches speak for themselves, and i think the strongest players in OR would have no trouble ranking up to the top 5 of Portland’s active players in the matter of a few challenges.
Edit: and some “real talk” on tourney placements, if you aint top 5(hell top 3?) it dosent matter. if your 9th and Angel is 10th, unless you played, it dosent matter. if your not top you lost your money
Slash: Your example of having a ladder in a bar in Salem isnt the same thing. In your example Ronnicle and Kevin cant participate because they arent old enough to get in a bar lol. EVERYONE can participate in this. Challenges can take place be at any venue, anytime, and even online if they choose to. Its entirely up to the players. Im not going to post WHY we started this ladder because Ive done it many times already. Read some of the earlier posts. Nobody is gonna give you shit for not being on the ladder because you are not constantly posting negative bs in the NW.

If people want to do a ladder, let them do it. I don’t care for or agree with the ladder much either. I’m on the ladder to support the scene even though I would rather have nothing to do with it. If it makes the participants better players in the long run, then that particular goal has been accomplished and the effort put into the ladder was worth it.
On the other hand, the reality is half of PDX doesn’t give a shit about this ladder for various reasons (logistics, nothing on the line, etc…). If a good chunk of players/top players don’t want to participate, how can this ladder be a true ranking? I saw this drama coming a mile away, did you guys not read the Seattle ladder thread and the same drama went down?

The idea that $$$ needs to be involved to gather top players is saddening. We have the same shit up here where 2-4 of the top players only really show up if money is involved and it pisses me off. Why do people not want to help their scene? I think it’s hilarious because the top players that don’t help the rest of the scene lvl will in turn not lvl up themselves, right now in Seattle alot of the so called “good players” are bitching that the comp around them isn’t good enough to for them to get better. When the reality is that it’s their fucking fault. If they came out to more sessions and helped people get better they in turn would be pushed to stay 1 step ahead. Right now I think that having an arcade in Portland will lvl all you guys up quick that is a great way to get better. Also the tilt tourneys will help too. I plan on heading down not because of the maybe even possible $$$ but the experience.
Everyone appreciates you supporting it. Alot of good players are all chillin at the bottom together lol. You all need to start working your way up so we can get some competition going. Peeps need to be challenged for thier spots in order to be motivated. You know damn well the current top spots are not legit. They will stay the same until they are taken though. Also Im more concerned with the goals of expanding and leveling up our scene than my own rank. I know if I make that my primary goal I will level up regardless. Also Sam you hella free in fifa. Yes it is sad but it’s true. Thats just how some peeps are. It doesn’t bother me though because in the long run, the ones helping everyone else level up will be the strongest players in the scene anyways. It really opened my eyes to experience the way seattle does casuals compared to how portland does. Peeps were giving me hella tips while playing them. There were a few instances where they stopped the match to show me how to counter a specific move or situation. It’s very clear why the overall level of play is higher in seattle than portland. It felt much more like a community during a session than a bunch of individual players.

To say that the top players in Portland only show up when money is involved is ridiculous. I’ve made an effort to get out to sessions more, to chill and play games. Some people were upset with me when I stopped playing SF4 for a bit and only showed up to tournaments, but I’ve been more active lately with SSF4. So why am I not participating in the ladder?
Honestly, I just don’t like the whole challenge system. I recognize that to keep things moving there’s the whole 1 week limit, but sometimes things come up and people can’t make it to gatherings when they want to, and hell two people might always end up having scheduling conflicts that could make it difficult for them to play their match within the week (yes, I know that online matches are accepted if both players agree, but there could also be the 360/PS3 thing…). If I decide I want to take a bit of a break from the game like I took a break from vanilla SF4, does that mean I no longer deserve my spot in the rankings? Let’s not call this the top player rankings then, let’s call it the active player rankings.
Yes, this is stuff I should have brought up when everyone was proposing ranking systems, but… there were so many different ideas I didn’t feel like replying to all of them. Honestly I just don’t really care that much because it’s hard to come up with a system that pretty much everyone can agree with. You shouldn’t need a ranking system to give you the motivation to level up your game anyway. If you are seriously committed to getting better, you shouldn’t need your name being next to a number on a forum thread to motivate you.
Say what you want about money being on the line though, but when it comes down to it that is what truly makes people buckle down and get serious.
also… have I truly done my part in helping Portland players get better? Probably not. But we haven’t been super serious about things anyway, look at all the “random select” mini-tournament things we’ve been having. The results of those can be hilarious and are always entertaining to me, but playing random characters isn’t really the best way to level up.
