It would seem people are taking my points to literal…
From the suggestions the SG team has given us, it would seem Minette’s playstyle would consist of non-violent animations (tripping, serving food, possibly just being happy and jumping for joy) doing damage and having effects like that of normal fighting animations. I find this amusing, but not exciting for a new character. This has nothing to do with occupation in the sense of lifestyle as much as how it effects her animations and how it inspires her move-set. Filia’s move-set revolves around her new partner, Sampson, not her throwing pencils and pens or having the opponent take damage from her rage of having gotten an F on a test. Valentine uses hospital equipment in her attacks, but her attacks show that she is skilled at fighting, to which the equipment she uses may just be for ease of accessibility or of personal preference.
All of the characters move and fight in ways that can be taken seriously, and the humor comes from other areas. From the sound of it, Minette’s humor would come from how she moves and ‘fights’, as well as the possible ‘cute factor’ (AWWW SHE’S SO CUTE WHEN SHE SMILES LIKE THAT!!!). This is also inspired by Maya as in UMvC3 all she does is protect P.Wright, slide on her face, slide on her face farther, and flail her arms like crazy before falling on her face…none of which can be seen in any of way other than within a lighthearted manner. Now if it turns out the Minette is actually a secret agent sent to destroy the Medici family and was using the waitress position as a cover, has mastered 16 different martial arts, and just uses the items a waitress would have handy to fight with similar to Valentine, then I would be interested…but since her initial playstyle is inspired by gaining confidence by getting tips, I don’t see that happening.
My point with Dan and P.Wright still stands valid: They were not introduced to their respective series until after it became a success. SkullGirls is not nearly a commercial success, which is what I believe all the fans of SG want to see, and I do not believe introducing a character with a silly concept and a move-set that makes people say ‘That’s hilarious!/That’s so adorable!’ over ‘Wow, that was badass!’ is going to help them get there. I believe they should save something like that for a sequel, as well as Aeon and Venus due to the fact that they are perfect final-boss material.
Also, just because having her in/not having her in might makes us lose support of people we don’t want in the first place, it doesn’t change the fact that it is a loss in support…that is something SG cannot afford. This will work the same way no matter what character gets in, so this event is inevitable, but I think people need to look at this in a different light: It doesn’t matter who makes it in, because they will be awesome because SG is awesome, and that will never change.
It’s worth noting that I despised P.Wright before UMvC3 was released, but once I gave him a try I found him awesome and I’m still working on maining him upto a Lythero-Status. The same may happen with Minette makes it in…maybe I’m just afraid I’ll want to main a cute finny girl o_O? Nah that can’t be it, can it?
