Ono's ridiculous aesthetics

In his defense or just generally speaking, most people use the word fat as an umbrella term for a combination of lazy/weak/slow/unhealthy.
I never saw an issue with chun li’s big thighs. I for one, like curvy women and think that it looks aesthetically good on chun, given that she’s all about the kicks. Is that a chinese body type for women? HELL no, she look latin american if anything, but it’s a videogame. Who gives fuck if it looks good. I don’t think she looked great in IV because nothing did anyway, but her V look is very good IMO.

was about to write exactly this.

Thanks for that dev

What is this thread about. I read everything and still don’t get it.

People complaining how each character looks?

Can I talk about Bisons Colgate Smile and how sexy it is?

I don’t have a problem with the characters being goofy, I think it all depends on how it’s done. Like a lot of people have said, there have been goofy elements in the past, Skullomania, Guile’s gigantic hair, Necro singing opera, but I think the issue in USF4 is that it’s not done with any sort of style, rhyme or reason. For example, Necro singing is a nice touch because the character is already so weird that it’s the icing on a ridiculous cake, and you don’t entirely expect it. In USF4, bulging eyes and tongues being stuck out are exactly what you’d expect, so it comes off as less of a stylistic choice and more about having it for the sake of having it. The issue isn’t goofiness, it’s how and where the goofiness is presented.

the problem with SF4 is the artstyle. Every character that isn’t female (or guy and claw) looks goofy. Their features are exagerated. They look like idiots when they get hit by ultras.
Street Fighter always had oddballs.

Blanka and Dhalsim in SF2.
Necro, Oro, Q and Twelve in SF3.
All new male characters in SF4.
F.A.N.G in SFV (only “freak” character I’ve ever liked ever).

An increasing number.

It’s not even online. People hate Fuerte because his gameplay is basically “fuck playing Street Fighter, let’s just YOLO anime bypass footsies”.

Eh, it’s less Ono and more the perfect storm of lameness out of Capcom for the past - what, eight years now?

There has always been comedic elements in Street Fighter dating back to Street Fighter 2’s Loony Tunes style electrocutions from Blanka, Blanka’s eyeballs bugging out, and silly endings.

Street Fighter 5 just looks like Capcom hooking up Namco by creating assets they can easily import into Tekken X Street Fighter. It’s also their audition for the inevitable buyout by Bandai Namco.

It’s a bummer that Capcom can’t make an aesthetically pleasing Street Fighter anymore, but no empire lasts.

Fortunately Arc System Works is out there showing how to create mind blowing visuals that don’t look like dog vomit. If only Capcom could devise a way to make a game that straight up looks like the artwork of Kinu Nishimura, Akiman, Ikeno, Gouda Cheese, or any of the fabulous artists who have worked for Capcom Japan in the past.

Most of that wasn’t reflected in game, just win quotes/endings/other goofy comic book media.

Shoutouts to just creating a brand new mugen character with that Sakura 2 letter mixup typo.

And shame on them making a (different, interesting) powerbombing character into a background goofball by now (SFxTekken), probably not coming back ever. Just thinking about this now, shit, he probably wasn’t-but go ahead and turn him into Dan->SNK Ryo/Robert, Sodom into a SamShodown parody. Granted he started serious enough, running trampling sword rekka slashing you in Final Fight/STREET FIGHTER '89

That Final Fight Fighter was goofy as shit though.

Yeah but I feel like offline he’s a lot more manageable because you can actually react to the mix ups.

I like some of the goofier designs as long as it’s done properly. Birdie may have changed to a bloated comical character, but his Alpha design wasn’t above being over the top. Even without mentioning his mohawk he has a very disproportional body build and even more ridiculous animations which is most likely why I played the guy for so long.

Outlandish characters just feels nice to have around in the SF universe even if some characters just are bland like Twelve. If Capcom can make a elastic opera singer, gold skinned naked old man, and a masked mystery in a trench coat work in the mist of every type of “badass” then I’ll gladly welcome more designs like them.

I’d take all the “goofy” designs in later games over this.

I love 3rd Strike and all, but I have to draw the line at wrinkly old man balls.

Yeah. As much as I like Oro I hated that shit.

We ain’t Power Instinct.

It’s not an option between one or the other. Even if it were, I’m inclined to favor a gross detail that is so minuscule I have just realized until now after many years of playing the game than looney whackiness up front on an increasing number of characters and almost all stages.

“Neither of those aspects” is a completely acceptable solution anyway.

Necro’s singing was awesome…until they fucked up his voice in 3rd strike. Him and Effie had harmony in the first 2 games.

Gouda Cheese aka Bengus is already on board and is actually doing art for SF5.

LOL yeah there is way too much goofy shit in SFIV. The whole look of the game is wack. Rufus is fucking ugly to look at. At this point Capcom should just follow what they are doing over at Namco with Tekken. We have capable hardware nowadays. It is ok to make cool designs again. SFV is still tryna maintain that cartoon look for some reason, and they are also hella inconsistent. Certain characters look dope, and then you have fat fuck Birdie. Ken’s design is terrible. His face is all fucked up. Maybe I am just biased against fat people, but I am sure as hell against ugly.

ken’s design is awesome. His face looking wierd =/ than bad design. Birdie looks fine. He looks better than the hunchback he nearly had in SF alpha

I can give you an easy case for each character if needed
