You’re asking for proof to what is generally a subjective topic.
My guess: Super Street Fighter 4 Turbo. or Hyper Street Fighter 4. or Ultra Street Fighter 4.
Or a new darkstalkers game.
random twitter comment since we’re being conspiratorial: Someone mentioned to Ono that he should make a “capcom fighting all stars” type game, and Ono’s response was asking him if he loved Poison.
I’m sure they are working on SFV but I think it would be a poor choice to reveal anything substantial about the game for at least two years. I just can’t imagine a new SF in any less than 4 years. Especially if they are getting serious with the DLC, Capcom sure doesn’t want to poison the well, again that is. And SF4, SSF4, MVC3 and SFV and a potential new VS all within 5-6 years is a lot of games in a genre that’s still pretty small.
And pretty much everyone I know/play with SF4 was their first fighting game that wasn’t smash bros. (I understand this is anecdotal and isn’t applicable to everyone etc. but I think it’s the case with a ton of people) I don’t think the vintage aspect of these games means a lot to most people. SFIV wasn’t the huge hit it was just because it reminds people of SF2 because a lot of people who really like this game have never even seen/played SF2. I think the characters just resonate with people still. Sorry if this was too rambly.
Oh i think we’ll see SFV or its equivalent in 2012. 2013 at the latest. Only thing that could hold it up is the announcement of Next Gen game consoles and even then…
Anyway I think there will be DLC for SF4 but I think it will at most be a balance patch simply because I think the new characters were all rushed out. More new characters or stages seems less likely to me because then there would be a large cost for the new content. Asking for a lot of money to continue playing SF4 just isn’t wise right now. This also would apply to something like an “SSF4 Turbo”. Ono has already stated that he doesn’t want to keep working on this one game and several Capcom execs have added to this sentiment.
As for what the new game will be I see three possibilities (in order from most likely to least likely, in my opinion): Darkstalkers 4 - this is obvious and MvC3 they can have already started. Some new IP - What else cpould be "bigger than SFIV" NvC - because of the rumors, the status of the two companies now and the E3 appearance. I find this least likely due to the nature of the characters from both companies, the logistics required for a Versus title, the release of MvC3(this is not the 90’s), and many other obvious reasons.
The left picture is Akira from virtua fighter it looks like, with a capcom logo on it. The right is the art style of SF4. i’m guessing either virtua fighter vs. street fighter done by capcom, or virtua fighter characters in SSFIV as an update. Thats my guess…
I think of all the fighting games that I would want to see become featured in a vs. game, “Street Fighter vs Virtua Fighter” would be far down the list. One of the most fantastical fighting games vs one of the most realistic fighting games of all time. I know that the “realistic” term is relative, seeing as every character in VF can leap into the air at great heights, and Kage can throw his opponents about twenty feet in the air, but they certainly can’t do most of the fantastical jargon that all the SF characters can do.
I don’t see how its going to work out if its going to be SF vs VF. Ryu would actually need good moves for once unless fireballs become unblockable and juggle able I guess. I would say VF is the second best realistic type fighting game when it comes to competitive depth.
But…Capcom DID make fighting games after SF3. They made a lot of them.
MvC2, CvS, CVS Pro, CVS 2, and updated JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure all released after 3S. And, SFA3, Pocket Fighter, and MVC1 were released after the first SF3 game supposedly “flopped”. Notice how ALL of these games were heavily influenced by SF3. Ryu hasn’t been without a Shin Shoryuken since 1997.
So, in a way, SF3 didn’t kill the genre (since several more 2D games came out after it)…but rather, SF3 kinda inspired the genre.
Until polygons finally put 2D to sleep for a while…
And, honestly the gap between SF3 and SF4 isn’t THAT huge (11 years) compared to the gap between SF2 and SF3 (6 years) when you consider that those 6 years were jammed packed with SF game after SF game. Seriously, those 6 years were ridiculous. SF2, CE, TCE, Super, ST, A1, A2, EX+a, SF the Movie, X-Men VS SF, Marvel VS SF. Good grief.
So, that 11 year gap between SF3 and 4 can’t be blamed entirely on SF3. The series just needed a break.
After all, we still got basically a week from now, before Inafune stands to make his announcement at Comic-con next Thursday. Might as well be patient about it.
