Online players mentality

I’ve been wondering about this for a while now, it seems the mentality of most people I play online randomly is rather scrubby.
Let me show you what I mean: I’m joining someones lobby, we play, I win dominantly. We play again, and I win again. And so it goes on, until I’ll finally lose, and I’ll get kicked from the lobby the moment I lose.
Or another example: someone joins my lobby, and the situation repeats itself, until the opponent wins a match, and he just leaves.

I don’t get it, of course when people don’t know how to play, I get that, I don’t find much joy in playing againts 500-1000 PP players myself, so I wouldn’t play long sets with those people anyway, but the people I’m talking about are usually pretty solid players, around 3k-4k PP. What the hell is wrong with their head. Isn’t it better to play againts a solid opponent? When I meet someone who constantly beats me, I’ll play the heck out of that lobby until I’ll learn the match-up or the tactics that player uses. What the hell do these people seek? Is it their pride, they beat me one time, they feel satisfied as if it was some kind of an achievement and then they quickly run away so that they wouldn’t lose that feeling? lol

Another thing I’ve noticed, many players don’t press start first after they’ve defeated you, They’re like challenging you, saying ‘yeah, I got ya bitch! Now you press that button first, show me that you wanna run it back, because me? I don’t care, I eat fools like you for breakfast’. I’m seriously telling you this guys, because I know that’s what they’re thinking, I’ve asked them that and that’s what they told me (not literally, but the meaning is the same). I’ve even had an epick 5 minute shodown, when I didn’t press start after I’ve lost, and the other dude didn’t do it either, and so we stared at each other until he finally just kicked me xDDDD And I’m fucking serious! xD

And yet another example of a mentality of an overconfident mother fucker: the man chooses his main. He defeats you, and then he switches to his shitty subs or your tough MU and plays like that for the rest of the session. Saying like ‘hey yoooo bitch, you ain’t good enough for my main, here, play my sit down back Blanka for the rest 10 games, it’s such a joy after all!’. The fuck? oO

It’s so, so so, soooooooooooooo rare to run into a good 3k-4k PP player, that wants to run a good set, that doesn’t go running to his sub characters after he defeated you one time with his main, that is actually solid and friendly. What the hell, why do people have to be such idiots?

So my quistion to you, does anybody notices this shit? Is it just me? Maybe it’s all in my head and I’m just imagining stuff? Maybe it’s different on other platforms (Xbox, PC). Maybe it’s only a thing that 3k PP players have and it’s not that common around 4k-5k PP players? I’m interested to see how the online crowd seems to the rest of you.

P.S. decided to write this down right now, because I’ve had a 2 hour session with most of my lobbys being as described from examples above. That was such bullshit.

Well , I play PS3 at 1-2k PP Level and I experience the same thing… So I’m not alone , I think its just that stage of players (sub 4k pp ) Before they learn respect and things… Or maybe your just SERIOUSLY UNLUCKY…

 1. You put too much stock in online. Its a tool for light training, nothing serious.

 2. PP/BP ruins the mindset of players. People get obsessed with points with really mean nothing. I’ve seen people with 0 PP wreck guys with 3000 PP, never think to hard about BP.But when people lose too many points, they start to play worse and they start to take things out of perspective, they start to see defeat as defeat and not as a learning experience.

 3. Online is scrubby but they aren’t all bad players. Anyone who has SSF4AE:2012 wants to learn more about the game and generally has a monogram of thought behind their actions, there are no more free-lunch players like in Vanilla SF4 where every 8 year old would pick Ken, lose and then say “Fuck this I’m playing Modern Warfare!”

It’s common everywhere online. A lot of people won’t even play me if I pick Seth, they’ll just auto-kick. Sagat? Tiger knee spamming noob, kick. Yun? Mashing noob, kick. Yang? Play Fei or something fag, kick. Vega? Throw this, kick. If I picked Dan, I’d probably be accused of spamming Dan kicks. People online just have ego issues or something. I perfected Krone one time in one round and after he won the game he kicked me (not that he auto-kicks me, it’s just … like … c’mon.)
I’ll never get a 30 game win streak in games I don’t make because that shit never flies. 5 or more in a row and you’re out.

I guess you can play in stream lobbies but you usually end up running into “that guy” who has to be on stream with red bars against everyone.

Just gotta live with it or play offline. It happens offline too, but it’s fairly rare (even rarer if you’re playing SF, not so much if you’re playing Marvel)

There are still a lot of bad players.

edit: actually I get kicked for having 4k pp too sometimes
>:(

AMEN. PREACH IT

I can dub this as the “Shao Khan theory”, respectively the one from mk3.

By this I mean this is probably the achievement they feel. They get beaten so many times, to inch closer and closer to victory to finally win a full round or two or three depending on the game. I just realized this was sf thread but you really see this in soul calibur vs people who’ve done studying.

I think a lot of players in the community don’t realize this, but for the majority of us, online is the only way to play fighting games and be a part of the community, fighting games is a global phenomenon, and the more bigger it gets, the more people are streaming in to the community via internet. So I’m one of those that has only online as his FGC window, that’s why it makes so little sense to me, why people are being such idiots online and refusing to play good players, preffering to satisfy their misplaced sense of pride. It’s just ridiculous how many players that think this way are there.

Develop a network of contacts if you want to play ‘proper’ games online. Its a coin-flip as to whether or not a random person you encounter isn’t going to have a prickly attitude towards winning/losing.

One good habit to get into is to open a dialogue with a strong player you encounter and ask them if they’d like to play some endless battles some time (usually a first to ten) and commend them on being good players. It’ll go a long way towards populating a contact list with good players which at some point will allow you to host some quality endless lobbies for those looking for good players (with good attitudes) to play against.

Point of view of a 505pp akuma (btw how many people have 4000pp by only playing akuma ?? not so much I guess) and 5000bp
I think after a year and a half that I know a little how to play this game (meaning I know when something was stupid or not).
So there’s another kind of coward online, the 4000pp guy feeling so good that he can switch char every single match and and play like if it was Viper every time (walk forward do combo, do string, the guy blocked ? repeat combo, back off ? hell no, repeat combo, etc.) or worse spam tatsu 5 times in a row and win of course (add some wake up ultra or reversal to that). Ho I forgot, the taunt there and here is also a must for them.

If you see frustration in the newbees population and stupid reaction, maybe that’s because so few older players respect them no ?
After you spend all the time blocking and waiting for the punish time, only to get reversaled because your 5 frames move come out in 9 online, there’s 2 reactions:

 • You’re a saint, a sort of Ghandi, and enjoy the loss knowing you were at least right on paper.
 • You’re like everyone else, you rage and adapt.

I’m not a random or masher, I do sometimes when I’m lost, but my main style is to play clean (and lose for it), but I understand why people end up doing so.
I rage when I get kicked for losing. I rage when people can’t keep a char for 5 matches so you can learn something. I rage when I fight some online warrior (playing an online tech more than the MU because they master that lag). So I can kick such guy from my lobby sometimes yeah.

Btw I’m in France for 4 months now and I can tell there’s no difference between here and USA in online behavior. Same scrubby people, but I never fought a true noob here. The community is small and so they all know the game for some times, thus getting bored faster and that could explain the shitty behavior.

Playing online AND with offline goals, clean smart games, yeah I thought I could find that. But I only experienced this with 5 different peeps in a year.
I often prefer ranked because at least they respect a bit more, because there’s some points to defend.

IMO you shouldn’t even bother playing matches that lag so much, specially as an Akuma player. IMO it’s best to play endless and add good players to your list that have good connections, with time you’ll have a great bunch of people to play against with good connections and different characters. Unless of course the lag is somehow caused by you, then online will be pretty much useless.

I agree with you. But as I’m moving out to France, all my great US buddies are lost :frowning:
I had a great session with AG and some others from SRK that helped A LOT. Now my exe is way better but I’m back to 0 buddies almost.

It’s not that easy to recognize a “good” player even with 4000pp or over in France as there’s 0 offline/Arcade culture here. There’s online warriors with their online shitty gimmicks. I can learn to fight against this maybe, but what’s the point. I learned here on SRK and with the videos of the best players in mind.

However I know it’s possible to level up online. I played there against C2Q and AG and Tiberius and lost with a clean attitude and real matchup stuff. It’s just hard to find those people. There’s some secret room with the “over 4000pp” rule I can’t join. That’s really kind…

Only solution is to send a request to good players you can find in the ranking list, yeap. But Ganishka is right, the overall consensus is to be a dick with everyone who’s not on your friend list. Upside down …

The “be new, get kicked for it, never get much proper play done” thing is freaking frustrating. You want to play sometime while in Europe Shab?

France has one of the best 3s scenes in the world, and I’d imagine they probably have solid SF4 scene as well. I’d look around a bit and make sure before you dismiss them.

There’s like 2 offline spots in the entire France. And to find them you have to look hard. So if there’s “a scene” it’s a private one between 30 old friends that play each others. But that’s not the point in this thread.

I’ll take it anytime yeah but I’m on PC. My gTag is just my SRK one. I’m just recovering from left hand surgery today so will be off for at least 2 weeks. Anyway I’m going back to my little island for a month or two to pack up and definitely move to France. If all goes well, I’ll try to find you on March.

Usually I’ll play 2-4 matches online and if it’s too laggy, I’ll kick you after. Otherwise, who doesn’t enjoy getting a good beatdown and learning some new things? I try to message some people who stay even though they lose quite a bit and give tips because you should always give back.

THIS. I wish there were no points, or that they are only used to purchase costumes/taunts/colors etc.

dur dur? herr!!!

herr derp per derp derder perder? hurrhurrpurrdur…>_<

HERP

NO U MORE

Gotta save them replays.

I think you might be reading a little bit too much into the thing about not pressing start. Anyway i think it’s just the difficult challenge/repeated failures effect. Kinda like in a DMC game or Ninja Gaiden where a particular boss kicked your ass many consecutive times. You wanna put the game down for the day, as you’ve grown tired of it for the time being. But you won’t do it a single moment before you grind that fucking boss character into dust, because you don’t want to give up on that note of having lost again. Then you finally do beat the boss that’s been giving you such a hard time and you just go “Man!! I finally beat that guy. Now that’s over with I can do something else.” . I’ve been subject to do doing that when I meet someone who is by far my superior in SF. If I’ve already been playing a lot that day and then I meet this person that wins like 30 straight times, I’ve probably already been past the point where I don’t feel like playing anymore. I just want to beat that person one time so I can end my session on a good note with a slight sense of an accomplishment. Though I might try my luck for a second win on occasion.

One last thing. While it is very likely that any one online could just be simply acting like a dick*, sometimes when they don’t play their main after winning, it’s just a show of mercy. Excluding my friends from this example, whenever I play someone I haven’t met before I’ll go straight to Juri** to test the waters and see what they’re working with. If they give me some close/challenging games, and we are trading wins and losses I’ll stick with my main and occasionally bring out my alt just to break up the monotony. But if they are getting flatout demolished and I get a perfect every once in a while, I’ll stop using Juri if they can’t handle her. Instead opting to bring out Sakura, Vega, and sometimes even Gouken. Basically anyone I am comfortable with that i know a single combo with and a second combo that i am very prone to dropping. There is no point to me humiliating someone. I’d rather use the opportunity to expand my horizons and level up my other characters.
TL;DR Online community is about a 50/50 split of assholes and decent people, and it can be hard to tell who is who. Just don’t rage over it.

*Down-back Blanka is pretty much the pinnacle of that faggotry.
**I am aware that this is in the Akuma sub-forum, just saw the thread on recently active. As well as OP not making this thread character specific.

Nope.

Plenty of those around.

It seems like the “online” players’ mentality is “just do”.

They don’t think about their actions or their consequences, they just do it.

Like when someone jumps at me literally 9 times in a row and gets anti aired everytime.
