One Piece Thread: Gear 2nd!

Oh man, this is so intense! ALL these great storylines of fishman island are going to be resolved in a dramatic way!

WHAT IS HODY’S TRUE FORM!? Noah! It’s so important!

Interesting revelation about Luffy’s haki at least.

I’m kind of wondering now why Hody hates humans so much (compared to others like Arlong and other fishmen). I’m hoping it’s something* different than what we’ve already seen, but I don’t think there’s that much more to work off of.

Hody was probably caught on a fishing hook when he was a kid and some humans kept throwing him back in as bait for sea kings.

there are only two things I can think of…

Hody was arrested at some point and anally raped by humans…a bit ‘harsh’ for a kids manga…
or
Hody is still salty from being spawn tubed in MW2 and is still raging from humans using noobtubes and RPG-7s. Imjusayin…

Probably going to be something like Hody was cool with a human but got his fishman heart broken over it. Either way, once Luffy gets out of the bubble this should be done real quick. Heck, Oda had to bring this fight to Hody’s advantage by making it a sea battle because then Hody would get done in before the rest of the Strawhats would get a shot at fighting.

Hopefully, next few chapters will be exclusively all about the Strawhats winning their own fights and we aren’t going to have to wait through a Hody flashback or more of a fight we know won’t get decided until everyone else is done for maximum dramatic impact.

Didn’t understand much about wtf happened this chapter …

Glad I wasn’t the only one. I had to read it twice to make sure I wasn’t just stupid or something.

Summary

Spoiler

Few key points I took from it.

 1. Luffy’s Haki isn’t good enough to keep his body from being pierced by sharp weapons yet.
 2. Hodi is batshit crazy for some reason and Bro-Hoshi seems to know why. Something about his mouth? I can’t tell if he said something to Bro-Hoshi or showed him his tongue.
 3. Decken is still alive and now Luffy has to save him.
 4. Transponder Snails seems to work underwater here, though when Buggy dipped one in sea water it shriveled up from the salt.

Think that about covers everything.

“True Form?”
1. I think it’s more than just being impacted with sharp objects, I think it has much more to do with the fact that Hody is abnormally strong.

 2. I can’t wait to see the reveal. I hope it’s different from Arlong’s reasons.

 3. Remember, sea snails exist in the oceans too [/details]

This chapter was exciting, I have my theories on what’s going to happen next chapter but still… wow!

Re: is above in the spoiler tags. Interested what your theories are, because I have no damn clue what the hell is going on now lol.
1. Yeah but you have to realize that swords and other sharp projectiles still exist, so the defense of Armaments Haki means a lot in that context in melee battles. Being immune to say, Lucci’s Leopard form clawed Shigan is a nice bonus.

 1. The “lost love” idea really makes sense, as it would explain the irrationality and his contempt of everything and everyone.

As for what happens next, my guess is that Luffy will use the remaining air in the bubble to do a SUPER-FUUSEN of some kind and protect Noah, while causing some damage to reverberate on Fishman Island and destroy it.
imo the improtant thing I took from this chapter…

Luffy still loses to two of the three admirals for FREE…ice dude prolly still has his number, but no so much as the other two…until he can ‘tank’ super sharp objects, he don’t want any lasers…let alone lava.

Kizaru I agree with he’d get bodied… but Akainu’s attacks are more of a slow & powerful set. I think Luffy could handle avoiding them with his speed to get in close enough and knock his block off. It wouldn’t be much different from his fight with Magellan.

He’d be able to dodge, yes, in theory…but can he ‘hit’? He could harden his body all he wants, if he can’t tank sharp objects yet, whats to say he can tank the extreme temperatures…less we forget ‘lava can burn fire har har har’.

I wasn’t big on Ace, but I can’t front - I wish he was around longer. Would be interesting to see where he would be now compared to Luffy. We don’t know if he had any level of haki training, if he had access to emporer’s will, etc.

Good point, and I think this kind of hinges on the mechanics of Haki itself too. Whitebeard was putting fist to face on Akainu and didn’t appear to take any heat damage from it. Granted, Whitebeard is likely much more proficient at Haki. The question in my mind here is, does using Haki to land a hit on a Logia totally negate the effects of the element or just make them tangible? This scenario would really only apply on guys like Akainu and Magellan who can damage you just by contact so it’s hard to say.

He did show Conquerors Haki in one of the flashbacks of them as kids, but that was a filler episode too. I’m going to assume it was accurate enough though being the son of Roger.

Armaments allows the user to make contact with a Logia body as if they were normal humans while protecting themselves from the defensive aspect of their power. It’s like an oil-drenched fist punching a water-soaked body. The fluids aren’t necessarily bonding, but the punch is still felt.

Blackbeard, on the other hand, completely negates their power whilst touching them.

IMO, Luffy can probably take Aokiji right now if he went all out, but it won’t be an easy battle of course. Akainu probably will require Luffy to strengthen his Armaments ability more, since it’s been shown his defense has limits.

Makes me wonder about “Vulcan Luffy”…

He displayed it in the manga as well. I’m sure Ace had more knowledge of Haki merely by being around the Captains and Whitebeard. Blackbeard is also aware of it, even though he hasn’t displayed any high-level forms.

What’s interesting is that Whitebeard seemed to be proficient at Color of Armaments and Observation Haki but didn’t have the Color of the Conqueror. This seems to go along with the fact that he never aimed to own or conquer anything or anyone, merely have a family and possess the power to protect them.

Which confuses me because Shanks has it… come to think about it… Shanks’s C.O.A. is ridiculous, as its range was enough to crack the sides of Whitebeard’s ship.

Ace had the Conqueror haki? That just proves how much of a slacker he was. He obviously depended on his Devil Fruit power more than his haki ability which eventually led to his capture and eventual death.
What a waste.

Haohshoku Haki isn’t something you can just learn like the others, it’s developed through experience and when Ace used it as a kid he didn’t know what happened. This is why Luffy couldn’t fully understand it until Rayleigh explained the details.

Plus, Ace’s goal was to make Whitebeard Pirate King, so I doubt he would’ve realized it’s true potential.

Dark **King **Rayleigh. Hm…

That makes sense. Changes my whole opinion then. I could see him landing blows unsafely in that case maybe with reduced damage. Vulcan Luffy may not even be viable against Akainu. The extreme temperatures of lava should still be too much if the lava is not being negated by the Haki. From your description it seems like it’s just hardening the point of contact on both sides to resist the lava. Might not be nearly as effective on Magellan. I may still be misunderstanding the mechanics though.

Agreed. I must have missed or simply forgotten Ace showing it in the manga. As for Shanks, do we even know what his ambitions or goals really are?

I’m sure Luffy can easily deal with Magellan now, he’s already shown immunity to poison post-Impel Down and his Armament can definitely bust through Magellan’s standard defense. I don’t know about Magellan’s Venom Demon: Hell’s Judgment is serious business though, I don’t think Luffy can mess with that on any level as even the fumes can infect the user.

That’s the biggest mystery about him so far. My guess is that he’s trying to fulfill Roger’s dream by continuing to maintain the Golden Age of Piracy: “The New Era” aka Monkey D. Luffy.

Being on Roger’s ship he definitely know most of, if not all of Grand Line’s secrets and could probably head to Raftel if he damn well pleased; but it’s obvious that isn’t his agenda. He’s probably carrying Gol D.'s will.
