Yeah Justin Wong said that on Gooteck’s podcast. Vega is way to cool to be low tier. When the console version comes out I’m gonna play the hell out of him and then I will decide just how bad he is.
Truth be told, I’m beating a lot of the known CTF players. I think because since about a month and a half ago, I decided that I will ONLY be using Vega for as long as I play SF4. It just takes some discipline knowing when not to attack, because it is so easy to beat Vega’s attacks.
You’re avi is gonna give me a seizure Tweleve
If I can make an impact on one persons life, I’ll know I did something right.
On topic post: Does anyone know the condition to link standing HK after close 2 hit FP? Sometimes I can get it to work, but most of the time the HK whiffs/gets blocked.
To be honest, part of my rant was just me raging because I couldn’t figure out the Balrog matchup (which I actually figured out today with Ronstoppable’s help!!!)
But yea, I still stand by the fact that he’s the worst. He just has too many flaws. His life going to 750 after losing his mask, which you almost always lose if your health drops below 50%, is retarded. I mean, I know you can pick it back up, but picking it up is the last thing you should be thinking about if you’re getting rushed/pressured.
Anywho, I revised my match-up list:
Sim: 6-4
Blanka: 4-6 (not as bad as I thought)
Chun: 4-6
Ryu: 4-6
Honda: 5-5
Gief: 7-3!!! (trust me, this is your best matchup)
Guile: 5-5
Ken: 4-6
Bison: 3-7
Sagat: 3-7
Balrog: 3-7 (your fellow Shadowloo members pwn your ass)
Abel: 5-5
Viper: 5-5
Rufus: 4-6
Fuerte: 6-4
*edit
lol, I kinda wanna delete my first post and rewrite everything, since I have a totally different view on how most of these match-ups should be played. But, I’m lazy, and by the time I’m through rewriting that junk I’ll probably have a different view yet again. So, I’m probably just going to continue with new posts whenever I discover something good for a match-up, rather than revising the first post over and over.
I agree with everything except the Bison one, I don’t think Bison is nearly as bad as Balrog for Vega. I’d give it 4-6, but that’s just me.
Do elaborate on the Gief matchup though:wonder:
Maybe the reason I think Claw isn’t the worst is that he beats both of my characters (Gief and Sim) heh. I think 7-3 might be overstating Claw-Zangi, but there’s no doubt in my mind that Claw wins that matchup. Reasons:
–Claw has footsie-based zoning advantage over Zangief. Gief usually tries to get in based on the strength of his good footsies, like standing strong, standing/crouching shorts/jabs, standing forward, and crouching roundhouse, but Claw’s standing forward, crouching strong, and down-toward+roundhouse are as fast or faster and out-prioritize Gief’s crap. Down-forward+roundhouse beats lariat in its hitting range.
–Claw can run away well. He’s faster than Gief and his jump-back normals beat Gief’s rushing options, and his wall dives can make for good escape options. Gief also has no answer to a crouching Claw with meter at the other side of the screen. Nothing Gief does outside of crouching jab beats ex dive, ex dive hits crouching Gief on the other side of the screen, and it’s too fast for Gief to react to, so it’s hard for Gief to just walk forward, let alone jump forward or whatever else.
–Claw can play good meaty games on Gief. Gief has to guess between blocking jump-back+fierce high, blocking crouching kick xx ex dive low, and jumping/teching a throw. If Gief backdashes, best case for him he gets a 360 on throwing/low kicking Claw, middle case he escapes and goes back to his disadvantaged footsie battle, and worst case Claw did ex dive, which beats backdash. This might not sound great to you because you still risk taking a 360, but that’s why you should do jump-back+fierce more than the other options, and believe me, it’s one of the harder meaty battles that Zangief has to face.
–Backflip makes it harder for Gief to play meaty games on Claw than on most other characters. Gief can punish backflip with ex running bear grab or green hand, but Claw has answers to both of those if he predicts this. The good thing for Gief, though, is that the best case scenarios for him here involve taking half of Claw’s life and the worst case scenarios basically leave Gief at neutral or taking minimal damage.
–Claw’s jump-ins beat Gief’s antiairs if timed right. Gief still has backdash into 360/720, though.
–The reason I don’t think Gief dies in this match is the huge disparity between Gief and Claw in both giving and taking damage. Even though Claw has the advantage in footsies, the damage differential often means that Gief goes even with Claw on damage. Even though Claw can play decent meaty games on Gief, it’s gonna take a few successful meaty games for Gief to really feel the impact and Claw still risks taking damage, and even though Gief’s meaty games are less effective on Claw than on most characters, Gief only needs to get a couple guesses correct for Claw to really feel it and there’s not much that Claw can really do to hurt Gief on wakeup.
–6-4 for Claw, maybe 6.5-3.5
^^^ Yea.
Everything David talks about is on point. The reason I feel like this is a 7-3 is because Gief has no way to get in without taking damage. I understand the difference in vitality, but I usually deal at least a half bar of damage before I even get touched. And if the situation calls for it, I can run away forever. I mean, I know you can sit and try to psychic lariat or green hand Vega’s footsies, but against a good run-away Vega, that’s nearly impossible to do. It’s not like Vega’s going to be sitting in your face the entire round. I usually just run and let Gief get frustrated, which always happens, to the point that he charges in blindly. Even if I get knocked down, I’m not worried. Once I get away, and I will, you have to catch me again (which means you’re taking damage again). Sure, the damage is minimal in comparison, but that’s Vega vs lots of people.
I see. Nice info about Gief, there are quite a few of those bastards at CTF.
Note about Balrog, my Ultra went THROUGH his fucking headbutt. It wasn’t even an EX. It seems like a lot of my moves just go through him, especially on start up of his dash punches. This match is so fucked =[
Yea, the matchup is horrible. Balrog’s headbutt goes through a lot of stuff; it’s really really good. You basically want to run away hella hard in this match. Walldiving is not only a good idea in this match, but it’s a MUST. If you learn how to steer your walldives to bait headbutts and whatnot, you should increase your chances of winning. The problem with the walldiving mixup is Balrog’s TAP. If he mixes it up with his headbutt, your gonna have some trouble. So, walldiving is usually gonna be a 50/50 game, it just really boils down to how smart your play is.
Sigh
This is so bad, it makes Twelve vs. Elena look like a fair match.
Completely agree with everything here. You got it right.
I might put Rufus as 3.5-6.5 and Gief as 6.5-3.5 if I wanted to get all technical.
I’m a bit surprised Blanka vs Vega is not in 3-7 category but I haven’t fought many blankas. I’m still guessing Rog is the worst matchup, followed by blanka (in theory), and then bison.
Good shit doing well at the last AI tourney! I’m probably gonna start heading there now after this week since I’m done with school.
Just wait till you see the vids! :woot:
Looking forward to it. I hope you beat a sagat. I hate sagat so much. I’d pick him up because I don’t mind tier whoring, but god he’s so boring. And he’s tops in every sf game. Anybody can pick him up in this game. You don’t even need fast reactions because the game is slower and he does so much damage.
End rant.
Wooh, 9 win streak today, despite half the people I fought today being counter-pick bastards:arazz:
FUCK BLANKA. SERIOUSLY.
Vega does not beat sim at all. I’d say 6-4 the other way or possibly worse.
Vega don’t beat nobody period haha. I haven’t fought a good sim to be honest, but it seems like that matchup isn’t as bad as his other bad matchups.
Care to elaborate?
i did vegas ultra and a guile player summersaulted me out of it on reaction, vega truly is bad:looney::looney:
Um, he may have flashkicked you out of it, but it definitely wasn’t on reaction.
edit: Come to think of it, he had to have flash kicked you after you passed him, which means it DIDN’T stuff your ultra. The ultra takes like, 1 or 2 frames to cover the screen. Guiles flash kick takes 4 frames to start. Do the math.
