(OLD) Ken General Discussion Thread (Combos, Techniques, etc.)

Any shoto can do that and it ticks me off.

If you can predict when they are going to jump, backwards jump FK works. But thats a bit basic =]

Yea or jump straight up > kick if he did a couple of jabs/Creating enough distance between you. I mostly just block it correctly, cause you can see it coming. I’d say jumping back HK is best, even though it might seen kinda basic and scrubbish, or mashing Shoryuken through there bad strings if they keep crossup up and just jabbing

I wouldn’t try Dashing unless your reflexes are really good and you can see the distance the dude is going to fall. But if that’s the case then Blocking would probably be a bit easier. I mostly just end up blocking it once, then they always go for a throw, or they create distance with a C.Mk > Hadouken, giving me a chance to attack back.
Or what I do a lot as well if they time it badly (but you said yours timed it correctly) I always walk forward a small bit > Crouch (under the mk) > Stand up Grab. Works for me I guess

I’ve had this game since release day (in the UK where im from), and i main ken. Im nothing special as i havent had much time to play the game but im now spending alot more time on the game. One problem i keep running into is simple hesitation with punishing whiffed moves from my opponent. So many times over the past few times i’ve played online my opponent whiffs a move leaving them open for a damaging combo and i simply miss the opportunity costing me the game. I feel a big part of my problem is not having enough combos in mind to punish which leads to me hesitating and before i know it i’ve wasted my opportunity. What are some good combos to punish things like a whiffed SRK or throw attempt ? I understand the importance of execution and practice so i will obviously practice them first and add my own style to them with changes when i have improved my overall execution skills.

it really depends on the meter you have but hk, hk tatsu is great for stun and damage on a punish.

Eh…it depends on how fast they’re going to recover, really. If they whiff a jab srk at max c.mk range, then you gotta be quick about punishing with a c.mk into ex.tatsu, because thats the only thing that will land. We dont have a retardedly fast sweep and cant even c.mk to hoboken unless you’re in their face…so you pretty much gotta burn a meter to punish harder than a poke. If you have a lot of frames to punish then always go for cl.hk to hk.tatsu. If you’re not sure if the cl.hk will land before they recover, then just c.fp to hk.tatsu.

Jump In HP, Standing Roundhouse to HK Tatasu makes the same damage as Jump In fierce, land Ultra (ful ultra)???

Probably not but I would guess it’s close. HK to HK Tatsu does what? 350dmg. HP does about 100dmg so assuming no damage scaling you’ll be getting 450 damage (maybe 425 with scaling?). How much would the jump in hp > ultra do? 525?

Don’t forget the massive stun.

masive stun on the jumpiin but ultras dnt do stun and if ur ultra isnt all the way filld they should do about the same damage

I’m not really sure what your problem is with what I said? I never said I was on autopilot, I just mean that ryu has an obvious answer to almost everything, so its less actual thinking and more “if x do y.” Ken not-so-much, so he makes me think and work more. Also, once you get in with ken you need to make it count. whereas with ryu you can pretty much pick your range (and I never had much incentive to learn anything beyond basic hit confirms due to having no local SF scene beyond XBL) so ken makes me work more on my combos and execution.

edit: tl;dr: I was at a point where ryu was allowing me to win often enough with basics that I let my skills stagnate. Ken is more fun and also provided me with an incentive to work on my execution and combos more.
