Nice match DC…one question though, why don’t you c.mk tatsu more as a punisher? Your mix-up is great, and your pokes seems like they’re perfect every time. But you could’ve punish that Sagat a lot easier with a Tatsu mix-up? And you can always play it safe if you want?
If you would put a tad bit of pause in your game, you’d be freakin unstoppable! lol…
Hello JoeMasters and Mr. Chaos… I’ve added you guys on XBL in hopes of watching some replays. Now I’m a pretty bad player and I might not know much, but the the Ken replays from the New replays section that I’ve watched show some pretty bad gameplay.
I would like to evaluate my ken to yours and maybe you could help my game in a friendly scrimage. I already have a really good mentor whos a ken user as well. Me and him are in the training room alot trying to figure as much stuff as we can with ken especially on important matchups like balrog, sagat, sim, etc. I read good things about you in the ken forums and seen some of your vids. You got a solid ken, im not too bad either ill send you a fr. I hope i get the add!
hey i got a question for all ken players. I was wondering do you guyz somtimes feel that ken is just for a certain level of game play. Id say for lack of a better name semi serious. The reason i ask is becuase when i look at vids of top players in tournament play they use people who can chain their ultras easy. I feel that is a big part of high level game play. I love ken to death, ive played him in every sf game. Im still going to play him dispite this, but sometimes i feel that what ken lacks and what other higher tier players have is a bit much. what do you guyz think? discuss
The problem lies in Ken’s natural way of fighting. He’s an aggressor. And there is an inherent problem with being aggressive - holes.
What makes Ken good at being aggressive is his arsenal of mix-ups. But even so - a high level player is good defensively too.
They are skilled defensively
They know the match up and your holes
They have devastating COUNTER options
All those attacks - there will be holes. And when there are holes - there are counters… and there are combos… and there are ULTRAS.
> Let’s look at it from a completely competitive point of view. If you had to choose, seriously, between Ryu or Ken from a competitive point of view - Ryu is the greater choice.
-Ken has good mix-up abilities? Ryu has no less
-Ryu’s DP’s are superior
-Ken’s f+mk is a great striking attack. Ryu’s FB is just as good as a poke. The ex.FB is awesome. Cost meter - but Ryu makes that meter easily! And Ryu’s lp.DP is GODLY: good anti-poke/counter, good anti-air, good for setting up super/ultra. IT’S JUST GOOOOD
-In regards to TATSU. Both are good… just different ways to use them.
-FA… Ryu’s is much better.
-Ken can kara throw- not all that useful in high level play. Kara throw goes to compliment Ken’s mix-up game. As said before - Ryu can mix-up just aswel using other tools.
It’s all a personal opinion - don’t go nuts. But all in all, ask the question. What is the more LOGICAL choice from a COMPETITIVE point of view? Ryu OR Ken?
It might not be a question of why not use Ken. But more of a question of, “why use Ken when I can use Ryu?”

Per your question, I think Ken is pretty good. His punishment damage potential is amazing and he has some really good advantages on block or hit with his jabs. The only thing imho (I’m still new also) that he lacks is a chainable/linkable ultra w/o meter and the difficulty of getting in on characters with tight defenses.
It sucks that he doenst have a chainable/linkable ultra. Hes my favorite character but ryu just owns ken on this one.
i dont know i just thought of this. could u early AA mp.srk at the highest point of your opponents jump then ultra right after if there in the corner? ill test it out when i get home if thats the case then i guess he has one way of connecting ultra without bar but eh at least its something :china:
Well said… Even though I think Ryu is more boring to play as, I often find myself wondering why I’m playing as Ken mid match… It would be much easier and less frustrating to just go with Ryu. I honestly don’t think Ken has ANYTHING on Ryu in this game. Why am I still playing Ken?! Curse my fear of change…
very good posting you guyz, just what i was thinking. High level game play im sorry to say but ryu owns. I guess its ryus time anyway, in sf3 ken was king. so whatever.
That about sums it up…I’d say it’s simply easier to be more aggressive with Ken than Ryu since he’s a bit faster. But overall, he has him beat on paper in everything.
High level players choose Ryu over Ken because of Ultra–really. And his lp DP is a little better, but only for AA IMO. It has better start up, but I think Ken’s still lands faster so you can get two off before Ryu can. I’m not sure about this–but that’s the way it feels.
Honestly though, I think everyone should be able to win tourneys, and I would assume that the ultimate goal of the game would be to keep tweaking until you literally see EVERY character in tourney’s and winning. Ken would be right there if his Ultra was as easy to land as Ryu’s…so I dunno what the decision with that was…
Overall though–I don’t play in tourney’s, so the best people on PSN will be equal in skill to maybe Dr. Chaos Joe, Ed ma etc…and there’s not a whole lot of those types lurking around. So pretty much, I can hold my own–(get whooped but still hold my own a little) against them, my Ken is good enough for 90% of PSN players. I rarely have to rely on Ultra or kara throw to win regardless, so Ken works fine for me. If I could ask for anything it would be a better TC and a FA with longer range, so I don’t have to worry about karaing it. I honestly don’t like Ultra so much–IMO it just takes away all this damage, it just feels cheap to me. I like to work for my win…And you don’t even get it by doing anything–you get beat up–and your Ultra meter gets filled!!! lol…it’s like someone is just holding your hand asking you to make a comeback.
I think Ultra should be tied right in with EX meter, so you have to choose, and make decisions and really use your brain w/Ultra.
If Ultra were just thrown out–I think SF4 would be even more balanced. Well not Ultra–but the gay revenge meter really. Every character would be drawn closer together if Ultra’s weren’t so easy to land, or better yet-required that you think them out and earn, to use–not simply get hit and earn an Ultra.
tbh–the deeper I get into SF4, the more I dislike how the characters were balanced.
CORRECTION. Whilst Ken is trying to be air jordan - Ryu has already landed and thinking to himself, “Is that really necessary, ken? And what is with the flames? It doesn’t do anything- really.”
Look up the stats. On paper Ryu is better… but more importantly - play Ryu for a few months like I did. OMG HIS LP.DP IS TEH SHITZ
Match with Ken vs Ryu is pretty even. No clear winner. But match-ups against everyone else - Ryu has less characters to worry about.
