I’m beginning to think that people that like “OLD ANIMU ONRY” actually have some insecurity issues. I hate to break it to you guys… but anime fucking sucks. It’s shitty. It’s always been shitty. It was shitty in the 70s. It was shitty in the 80s. It was shitty in the 90s. It’s shitty now. The only reason why “old anime” seems better is because you don’t know a lot of the older, shit anime. Anime is a lot more mainstream in now (especially in America) than it was back then, which means more anime in general. Of course that means you’re going to see a lot of bad anime because there is more of it in numbers; however, the ratio of good to shit anime is pretty much the same.

Shinji was not meant to be liked. He was a wuss, was withdrawn, had mother issues, and whined alot. But this was by a design. He was not put there as a character that fans would love and relate to. It would simply not be the same anime if you threw in an ichigo/naruto/goku character.
Your entitled to your opinion. To some people I would not doubt for a second that it would be perceived as garbage.
I also do not doubt that eva has provided thought and insight to those who seek it. within its storyline there is something more than meets the eye. It explores religious, psychological and philosophical themes, while at the same time offering your run of the mill mecha fan service.
No, I;m sorry but most of the “deepness” of Eva is complete pointless bullshit that doesn’t mean anything and by the end of the series and subsequent movie has fallen completely apart into a pathetic brain melt that means fuck all.
Any serious break down of Eva will come to the conclusion that while the show has a few interesting things to say, over all, in general, the show in Bullshit.
But of course I guess “You’re entitled to your opinion.”
The latter half of Evangelion TV series, especially the last two episodes clearly had intention to break the closed domain of anime that keeps on offering narcissistic pleasure to otakus, that is, Evangelion had intention to crack the closed domain of anime, not from the outside, but from the inside, remaining within it, just as its purity is highest, or to make joy of anime self-destruct at the utmost limits.
The last part of Evangelion TV series-in which the progress of the story was stopped by Shinji’s interior monologue and he came to affirm himself groundlessly, saying “I can stay here!”-was not a play for the salvation of the self-some people misread it so-like brainwashing or psycho-therapy, but something like harassment with malice and irony to some anime fans. I think the last message of the last episode of the TV series-“Congratulations to all the children!”-was a quotation from the last scene of Yoshiyuki Tomino’s anime movie The Ideon (1982), as many people have already pointed out it. In the last scene of The Ideon, after the human race had died out, the souls of the dead characters were drifting in outer space and they heard the singing, “Happy birthday dear children!” That is ironic, in short, the last episode of Evangelion TV series implies that closed and self-sustained interiority is nothing other than a kind of “death.” It is death of the self as loss of the other. It also implies that the world of joy for otakus such as the first half of Evangelion TV series cannot help coming to a death on account of its close.
I don’t know. I sort of agree with him. There’s a lot of deep stuff that is hinted at in Eva that never actually has anything to do with the show, nor does it really address it. I feel like it mostly throws out some empty symbolism.
However, there is also way more meat to the show than people give it credit and it is one of the MUST watch series in anime. If not for it being actually pretty good, then for the history and controversy. Tired of people saying “overrated” and then acting like whatever they are talking about is pure garbage; eva is at the very worst an average anime with a really damn good budget.
Eva apparently is a love it or hate it anime; people’s response to the anime are most likely on one-side of the extreme. I agree with N_paul that even if the show wasn’t worth all the popularity/controversy it garnered, eva is a far cry from being bad imo. If you strip all the psychological/religious pseudo-complex themes you regard as superficial nonsense, you’re still gonna end up with an o-k anime. The only reasons I can see why someone would absolutely trash the show are:
main protagonist being a “bitch”
wack-ass ending
Hating on the show’s undeserving attention
To stay on topic, what about Hunter x Hunter? Never read or saw the manga/anime but i get the impression its something OP would like.
I understand that, but in most stories, it comes a time where the character turns into a “man” “woman” where they take responsibility and start getting badass. Like a proof of their heroism if you will.
Shinji never became that. In fact, he let everyone down instead and turned into a sick fuck at some points. I feel you though, but I can see that it’s not someone I can relate to.
Funny how Simon turned out a penny throw away and he turned into something GAR as fuck.
Gainax had very little money for the later parts of the show. Did you happen to watch 25-26? Gainax probably used peanuts and fruit rind for money for those two episodes.
Nigga you dumb. That whole series has Shinji forced to deal with shit in almost every episode. Evangelion could easily be renamed to “Watch this kid who was brought up all fucked up deal with a bunch of issues that he hasn’t have anybody helped with him because his dick that ignored him most of his life in favor of building him a giant robot for his son to pilot against giant monsters.” Rambo was by far the most hardbody 4 movies straight and he had psychological issues all over the place.
People saying Shinji was a wuss when he is constantly manning up and dealing with shit is by far the easiest way to prove how much of a retard a person is.
