I don’t know what the fuck you watch, but Angel Cop is a great example.
It’s plot wasn’t “ZOMG AMAZING” but the action scenes in that series were pretty fucking badass. Aside from vampire hunter D, that’s probably the only series I ever saw someone literally just make someone’s body explode.
And the fucking way the chick did it was amazing, along with many other deaths in the series.
So I don’t know what you’re on about with the nit-picking.
Angel Cop is the perfect anime. Robots, random espers, heads asploding. And gratuitous violence. All it needed was some tentacles and lolis being split in half by horse weiner weilding ninjas and it would have been perfect.
Hiroki Hayashi directed the 4th episode of the original BGC and was responsible for that crappy remake. He’s also the guy who directed Tenchi Muyo. I’m amazed that it was so bad. They should have just had Masami Obari direct it. He’s the guy who directed episodes 5&6 as well as the Fatal Fury OAVs.
I’m a bit confused on this one. There are lots of versions of Devilman and Cutey Honey. Couldn’t plug into to the original TV series of either one. Devilman OVAs were good, and Shin Cutey Honey and Re-Cutey Honey were entertaining, but the rest? Couldn’t do it. Devilman Lady was also a let down, especially compared to the original manga.
Remake was saddled with too much late 90’s baggage (themes, music), which was an ill fit for the series.

Anyway, my reco to the OP:
Ranma 1/2. Silly concept, but wonderful writing. Kind of plays out like a Saturday Morning Cartoon Show in a lot of ways. It’s aged incredibly well too, probably one of the best looking shows from its time. Give this show at least 6 episodes before dropping it.
Ashita no Joe. If you enjoy Hajime No Ippo you’ll love this show as well. They too compliment each other nicely and given very different takes on the life of a boxer.
Angel’s Egg- Might want to save this one for October. It can be a nice accent to a halloween movie marathon due to the heavily unsettling and creepy nature to the film.
Mr. Arashi’s Amazing Freak Show- Another one for the month of October. Now, you won’t ever find English subs, so if you don’t know Japanese you’ll have 0 idea what is being said, but don’t worry, there’s enough body language to go around that you can follow along. Not understanding what is being said just makes it all the creepier too.
Serial Experiment Lain- Okay this one is kind of difficult for me to reccomend. It is very unapproachable, you’ll either love it or hate it, but I think it deserves a mention. Just give it a shot for about 3 episodes, and if you aren’t digging it by then you never will. Luckily the show is very short so even if you don’t like it, you aren’t investing a whole lot of time in it. The show is also blessed with the best opening song in all of anime.

Battle Angel Alita- Not much to say, worth checking out
Tenshi Universe- Okay this kind of a tongue and cheek recommendation. I don’t actually like this show, but I find it hillarious, ESPECIALLY the English Dub. It has the worst dub of anything ever. Yes, I’ve seen Bible Black, and yes, I find this one worse. With this show, you’ll either not care for it, love it, or find it hillariously bad. These are really the only 3 opinions that are possible for this show.
Mind Game- Best anime anything ever. Best film ever. Masaaki Yuasa is a once in a centurary kind of artist that shouldn’t be ignored. In fact check out everything he’s done, new or old, especially:

Cat Soup
Tekkonkinkreet
and The Tatami Galaxy
He’s especially reccomendable to people who don’t like Anime, since weeaboos don’t consider him Anime since his stuff is heavily based on early western cartoons in style and animation.

dude…lol,…yeah…saint seiya definitely has alot of “homo-erotic” tendencies…but i think that the creator was trying to display the “man love” between brothers in arms…something soldiers talk about all the time. the love between soldiers who have been in battle.
at least, that is what my assumptions are to the creator’s thoughts.
also, what version did you watch as a kid. the spanish/french version? the original japanese? or the hacked up & edited english american version? there’s a difference.
voltron lions is a badly written show. the american AND the original japanese version. the spanish version got the script improved while they translated it. but it is violent , bloody and gory.

And I hate both of them. Those are the only two series that I know where a **MAIN CHARACTER CAN RUIN AN ENTIRE SERIES. **
EVA is OK. It could have used more robots and less angst.
The only good part of Eva was the middle. The beginning sucked and the end was the worst crap any person could have shitted out of their ass, barring Gundam SEED Destiny.
