He still got the job done more often then not. The shows a deconstruction, He’s only like 14 years old. It’s a realistic look at the effects of flinging an already emotionally weak child into an impossible situation. He handled it as best someone his age could. Just to much unrealistic Gundam shit with 15 and 16 year olds handling war like 30 year vets. You end up with scewed expectations. Shinji’s character is one of the one things Eva does right.

No one said they were smart about it. I didn’t exactly approve the budget for the show, but if you compare it to anime of the time (and anime of the present) it looks much better than almost all of it. Also, did I happen to watch episode 25-26? Really? You’re going to ask me that after I recommend that everyone who likes anime shuold see it?

You can say that, but it all comes down to a line of a person’s breaking point.
Shinji, most of the series, got controlled and bullied into just about everything he just did it without growing any balls. It’s like that meme where the guy is all “Okay…” to every damn thing. Like Simon from Gurren is basically the same archetype of a character and he was probably just as young if not slightly younger. Sure, their situations were different to turn out into different people, but it just goes to show in either situation - When enough is enough, the tough gets going.
Shinji never just said “Fuck this shit.” In the end games, he was still the “Oh well…” Shinji.
I know it’s a fucked up situation, but I think we’ve both seen enough animes, old and new, where it’s about a young pilot dealing with their first tastes of war. Amazingly, they all usually grow some balls. Then Shinji, on the other hand, just never does and ends up coming out of it. I think the main reason people watch stories is to see how a person matures. (Be it good or worse.) However, Shinji’s characteristic kinda never changes. I think that’s where people get pissed, because it’s like, “When is enough, enough? When is he gonna turn on these hands that keep fucking him over?” and instead he just ends up destroying everything.
