Wasnt going to say anything but you did it twice -_-
Jesus Christ… Of course SF4 will be similar to SF2 because it was supposed to imitate it. It’s not meant to be a modern fighting game you dumbass. How about going from Karate Champ to Melty Blood Actress Again instead? Can you do that and still say the genre’s MECHANICS have not evolved much? Compare that to FPSs. What do you do in Wolfenstein? You aim your gun and shoot people. What do you do in modern FPSs? You still aim your gun and shoot people.
So you described the 2D fighting genre by 1 basic defining rule of “2 characters fighting on a 2D plane”. Good job! Now how about you address the rest of the rules?
Topic doesn’t make sense. “OGs” are winning in these new games.
I said that the transition from older FG to newer FG is much easier than with other genres.Wolfenstein had just 4 directions and strafe left, right. But then introducing more detailed controls (mouse and later dualshock), higher AI and better interactions with 3D environments, it made the game feel completely different and more difficult if it werent for save points. I cant play a modern shooter at all.
Even platform games introduced dual shock and mouse controls where a 2D character can shoot in all directions. Was present in Ikari Warriors arcade but was not a feature in consoles till recently.
Sports games too. Going from an old 2D soccer or basketball game to the new 3D dualshock controlled games looks chaotic.
Mechanics changed in all genres, sure.
But in FGs at least you have the same control scheme you used to have from the old days. So at least with movement you will not have those issues. that is very important. Imagine if you didnt even know how to move. Unless they introduce dual shock controls to fighters which didnt happen yet due to their arcade legacy, they’ll remain more traditional.
Despite how things look sometimes, most peoples reasons are never the same. I argue with my homies all the time about why post 02’-FGs are ass and we all agree their ass, still.
lol If you really wanna know…you should just ask.
Are you really trying to say that OGs dont like new school games because they are complicated or something?
If you do, you really need to find a gun and shoot yourself in the head.
Doesn’t mean they can’t hate them.
Yeah man, these new games are way too complicated. I mean, now we gotta manage super bars, X Factor, assists and all that jazz. Forget that a lot of these mechanics are very poorly implemented and are basically meant to dumb down the game as much as possible and appeal to the lowest common denominator. Forget that a lot of these new games just plain suck and are unappealing.
the truth is simple: these new games are just too hard and complex for the OGs.
AMAZING THREAD!!!
OGs hate noobs for lack of RESPECT
If only there was a reward for such thread making prowess, such as a trophy, cash reward, or even a bullet to the eyeball.
no.
we like what we like because of time and memories. time spent and memories of that time.
IMO generally speaking “OG’s” don’t like a newer fighting game for example like AE or like UMVC3 because it’s on “Fischer Price Mode”.
“Old school players” (I use the term loosely from SF2 to MVC2) dislike the new games because of easy user friendly BS you can pull off. The game engine for the console games are not gritty anymore. They’re loose and filled with shortcuts. So coming from an era where combos took practice and were hard to pull off, this whole new “silver platter combo system” is kind of insulting.
For example going from 3S to AE is a regression.
most people who consider themselves ‘OGs’ usually aren’t worth really considering anyways. It’s a focus on all the wrong things in the culture.
Hating on new games is just a quick easy way to establish your position. The successful ‘OGs’ don’t need to do that, because they’re notable in the culture for their success as players or organizers, so they don’t need to prove anything.
(Noting that people like and dislike what they like or dislike, its just making a big deal of it with emphasis on the ‘good old days/damn kids’ that’s suspect)
The point, though, was that the OP is implying that OGs hate new games because they can’t keep up with all of the new “features” and thus lose, when it’s obvious that most of them still found success in newer FGs.
Perhaps the OP doesn’t mean OG as Old Gamers, but Old Garbage, that would explain why he thinks that those OG can’t keep with modern games seeing that he thinks that they are more complicated.
Insert Name Here has summed up most of my own feelings on this; e.g. “why are you lumping all of us together as some hivemind?”, but I’ll add a tad more. While it’s not like I was some big-name tournament player going all the way back to World Warrior… nay, to Yie Ar Kung-Fu, Karate Champ, and Street Fighter 1, I was around for the earliest parts of the scene. I remember the nonsense house-rules each region had (in one area, you could call “star roll!” while dizzied, meaning you were requesting the opponent let the dizzy stars roll and vanish until you returned to Neutral state… eventually we all grew out of this, thankfully), putting a quarter on the little edge beneath the monitor to reserve your spot, and so on. I figure this is close enough to ‘OG’ to be qualified to respond as such.
And with that in mind, my response - speaking solely for myself - is: What are you talking about? I appreciate both old and new fighting games. You want to play Super Turbo with me? Sure! Marvel Super Heroes? Alright, I’m up for that. Persona 4 Arena? I’ll play it! Tekken Tag Tournament 2? Definitely; I could use the practice since I’ve just recently gotten into Tekken, and if you’re offering match experience I will gladly take it.
Once a fighting game meets certain core design elements and establishes itself as competent/coherent, I will either willingly play it or at least smile and nod when others choose to play it. Playing is more fun this way (more variety), and watching streams is a hell of a lot more fun when you’re not fanboying over a game. Why whine “Put Marvel back on!” when I just enjoyed a good two hours of it and the broadcaster is now offering another quality game to watch for a bit? Just give me a sec to go get a drink and snack while you change games, and I’ll be delighted to watch some VF5FS. Might even convince a friend to watch with me, and see it on their big-screen. There are only a few games in the current crop that I say “Eww, no” to and walk away from.
I’ve learned to accept that there is no One True Game (though Divekick’s slogan would protest this). Classic fighters are fun to play and watch, and new ones are too. I love each of them for the different-yet-familiar experiences they can offer. The best part about this? Instead of spending time hating on Game X and promoting Game Y, I embrace both and spend more time happy. I win by just deciding to be positive and open-minded!
The way I see it and I’m expanding the discussion between “Old Schoolers” and “New Schoolers” is the shift of the fighting game scene from the arcade to the console.
From SF2 to MVC2 the “old school” games were arcade base. The philosophy was different because the economics was different. Make arcade games harder to play so that you can increase the replay value of the game. Fast forward a decade later to the reemergence of fighting games in SF4, the philosophy changed because it was mainly console. Make games easier so that it can sell better. This is why out of the box you get everything handed to you with trials and easy mode controls.
Ten years is a big gap and I think there’s a big generational divide. It’s hard to put the old school and the new school together in playing the same game. There’s gonna be resentment on both sides.
I don’t see how adding mechanics directly detracts from application of fundamentals, when you could, say, apply those “old” fundamentals to use new mechanics/resources to their greatest extent.
It’s a very simplistic argument, with some good ol’ fashion labeling thrown in.
SF4, Girlfriend!
[details=Spoiler]
I don’t talk about SF4.
You can imply whatever you want and insert SF4 into everything when you think everything has to do with SF4 somehow, I was going to insert GG if I needed to talk about that again, that whole thing was explaining more about SF3 than his 1 line misconception. He never said SF4 in our back and forth discussion… trolled into saying SF4 so many times. SF4chan. “Implying”
SF4 could use some Jazz. The only music of that genre it has is… Ibuki/Dudley. SF4 doesn’t have everything and it never will! You should move on from that puppy love.[/details]
Maybe this argument might work for 3D games, specifically Tekken. This is SRK, we don’t understand the 3D games enough.
“Rage Meter” can just get the hell out of the game, is one argument. Automatically activated Level 2 and 3 X-Factor, for Capcom examples. Or T.O.P. from Garou if you even know what that is. Then there’s Dramatic Battle, 2 on 1. Even better Rage Meter gains for the 1 character player.
You should also do some research on Marvel 1 and 2 differences to 3, to make some blanket statements about them too. Here’s some stuff to start with:
