I don’t know why the hell people can’t get it through their heads - forGG is GOOD. Like, REALLY REALLY GOOD. If you’ve ever watched forGG from before this season, you knew that he would be a beast if he could add just a little finesse to his already incredible macro… and he’s done more than that. He actually kinda micros now, and his macro hasn’t slipped at all. Sure, he has lapses where he just lets his entire vessel cloud die, but that’s probably because he’s busy building twice as many vessels (and he already got his irradiates off so shruuuug). Unit control isn’t everything. forGG’s macro, timing, preparation, game sense… all of that has added up to be enough to compete with and beat the top pro-gamers, and he can do standard micro stuff now when the situation calls for it. He has the potential to be a better iloveoov (his macro is better in terms of pure unit production)… only time will tell if he can follow up this MSL win with bigger and better things.
But yeah… you simply don’t throw away MSL finals games. Jaedong didn’t even play that badly- he just played like he usually does and, as expected (if you know anything about forGG), he got punished hard for it. He changed it up with the sunken rush, kinda… but every game was fast spire -> mutas into fast hive. Blame sAviOr for the fast hive style ZvT trend if you want, Jaedong had his chance to mix things up and he didn’t… he didn’t make the same kind of immediately stupid mistake that Flash did (fast expo every game, bad scouting) but he made his own kind of mistake (fast tech every game, fast spire -> mutas every game).
Game 1, sunken rush put him behind and then forGG found and killed his spire (and evo chamber, note forGG’s upgrade advantage for the entire game); Jaedong has like 5 mutas at most to try to stall a huge ball of MnM that is already killing his expos. The queen’s nest and hive went up shortly after this (or before?)- Jaedong falls behind in economy and unit count to try to catch up on tech/upgrades, except he never really does, he gets dropped on a bunch of times, his army size never matches the size of forGG’s reinforcement waves (much less forGG’s actual army), and then he loses. You can’t really harass in that situation, not without falling further behind than you already are. By the time Jaedong could have maybe started harassing, forGG’s unit production was at the point where he would be facing two armies at the same time and both of those armies would be bigger than his entire army.
Game 2, Jaedong has to build a bunch of lings and threaten a run-by to keep the Sync-style sunken break from happening, stalls long enough for mutas to come out… but by then, forGG has +1 weapons and a billion turrets around his base. Mutas have to retreat, Jaedong is bleeding mutas the entire game to try to keep the push at home; lurkers kinda help except forGG has +1 armor by that point. One sweet marine spread later and Jaedong’s first lurkers are dead, mutas and lings keep melting to +1(2?) weapons, Jaedong’s has fast hive AGAIN but he can’t stall forGG’s army with muta/ling, a vessel and two tanks handle the lurkers (defiler den is finishing right around now), forGG defends against a pincer attack or two pretty well, adds more MnM and tanks, pushes into the nat, siege finishes and puts Jaedong behind on bases and down 0-2 in the series.
Game 3, once again Jaedong just can’t cause enough damage with lings, mutas once again arrive just in time to meet +1 weapons and a billion turrets… Jaedong does a bit with a ling run-by attempt but it doesn’t quite pan out, forGG’s army gets way too big to hold off, he just plain overwhelms lurkers with more MnM than the lurkers can kill, reinforcements pour in and Jaedong only has 1 defiler to try to save his base against MnM + firebats + tanks.
forGG just outplayed Jaedong, and yeah Jaedong didn’t seem on top of his game, but he wasn’t playing badly, either. Crazy mechanics and multitask were still there, it just didn’t matter because forGG forced everything to 1-2 points of conflict that actually mattered and steamrolled Jaedong with superior macro.
