Official Starcraft Thread

The games were sick and even though Tasteless’ commentary isn’t at all refined, it’s much more fun to watch the matches with his commentary attached. If he can speak more professionally without so many pauses and remember who is playing instead of calling known elite professional players by their handle instead of by what race they’re playing most of the time. His insights and thought processes for what the players may be thinking and what their options are are definitely appreciated though and I’m looking forward to seeing Tasteless grow as a professional announcer.

BTW we should play again Harem ;D I want to get back into some online SC action with people I know. Gotta practice up so there can be some day one domination on SC2.

question: what is the best class for a beginner? I want to learn Zerg…

They’re all playable at any level until you get to like the top ranks of professional gaming. Zerg seem to fair the worst, but you shouldn’t have to worry about that.

Just play Zerg, learn to expand and make units while attacking at the same time. Basically the rule of thumb in most RTS is to always have as little resources as possible even with more bases. Massing and attacking might seem like a great idea, but you should never reach your max population cap because that means you have resources you can’t use and your units could have done more to harass your opponent. Losing units isn’t always bad if you’re doing equivalent value in damage.

How do I counter sieged tanks, turrents, bunkers, and goliaths if i’m terran or zerg?

I would say go Protoss. Protoss is far easier to learn at the beginning stages imo.

PvZ - Zealots->Sair->DT/Reaver/Shuttle
PvT - Zealots->Goons
PvP - Zealot/Goon combo

The only thing is that it makes you really watch your resources and you really need to have timing on your expos, cuz Protoss is not friendly at all with resources…seriously :<

I play Terran if I’m just dicking around. Spider Mines are pimp status.

Protoss has LONG been considered the hardest race to play at high level. Until incredibly recently in the pro scene there had never been a Protoss at #1 on kespa(Recently Bisu and Stork I think were #1 and #2 though heh). Protoss is easy at very low levels because of the ease of macroing with a smaller base(Cuz the units are expensive), 2gate zeal rush being hard for newbies to stop and cannons being an easy catch-all static defense.

Every race is extremely viable though. The balance in Starcraft is all about the maps and styles. ZvP has historically been the least balanced match up, even now with maps that make it difficult for Zerg and the new fast expansion Protoss styles I would say all but the very top Protoss players merely break even on the match up.

Balance is often summed up with this: Zerg>Protoss>Terran>. It works like a rock/paper/scissors circle. It isnt a very nuanced assesment or take into account people who are extremely skilled at the “bad” matchup of their race(also in the past couple years Terran seems to have evened out with Protoss making that match up 50/50)… BUT it basically sums up the hard and easy match ups for each race on a typical map like Lost Temple, Luna, Python, etc.

Terran needs to play a map control game, spacing like in a fighting game takes place between siege tanks. And bunkers are largely redundant as marines are really not a great TvT unit. Try to rush for dropships after matching expands with your opponent, then start dropping him where he is weak, once you secure a large lead you can try to go battlecruiser.

Zerg doesnt really have trouble with this unless we are talking a quick push, in which case the axis of the game becomes about breaking the push so you need to either use mutas to stop reinforcements and harass their base while massing enough mutas and lings to break the containment… Or you can try to lurker/ling and break it straight up. Or do something tricky like lurker drops.

In a long game where a terran might be turtling under tank/bunker/mine setups… Guardians, swarm, ultra are all pretty good. Ultra and guard you need numbers though, dont bother with those if you are economically behind.

on lower levels i’d definately say protoss is by far the easiest. Zealots are very powerful units and don’t require a whole lot of micromanagement compared to marines and such. Fighting off 1 zealot with 3 marines takes a whole lot of micromanagement compared to just doing attack move for the zealot pretty much. I got no idea about higher leves, but starting off it’s definately protoss.

TvT is a really hard fight. VS Siege Tanks it seems like the best bet would be more Tanks, Goliaths and Vultures w/ Spider Mine upgrades. Bunkers are worthless other than being defense structures and useless against Sieged Tanks as long as you’re always scouting. This matchup is about having more in general. Expand and out macro your opponent. Proxies are good if you can pull them off but most random games involve players massing up, defending then pushing and they always pump out Marines really fast. If you can, tank and vulture drop their resource line and kill expansions as fast as possible. The more you can choke out their resource gain, the easier it is to kill a Terran player.

As for Zergs vs Terran, Dark Swarms, Lings and Ultras on the ground. Lings make great energy food for Defilers while Ultras are susceptible to Irradiate, pretty much every unit will have trouble with the Dark Swarm. Pop and destroy. Lings and Ultras under Dark Swarm wreck pretty much all Terran armies. Firebats are your most hated enemy in this so make sure your Ultras take them out if you see them and don’t forget to STAY UNDER THE CLOUD. Even if the enemy is running, unless you’re confident you can kill them, let them run, use the time to expand and chase them later after your defiler is ready to dark swarm again or you can grow your army. Mutalisk make great harassment tools if you can stack them, if not then don’t worry too much. If they start to get Science Vessels, Scourge em’ (and if they’re good, they will). You can mix in Lurkers if you want to for containment, but the meat of your counter game vs Terrans is the Defiler.

Yeah haha. I occasionally mess around with other races.

I used to but there’s delay. It’s like going on Kaillera without p2p or not having GGPO.

Everyone should either get Hamachi or the SC Latency Changer and it’ll feel like playing on LAN. Nowadays I play with friends on Lan or on Bnet using Latency Changer.

We should get some SRK Hamachi channel. :lovin::lovin::lovin:

Edit: Here’s the Latency Changer link.

Anyone here still play on Bnet? If, so give your name and we can play some time :D. Trying to get back into SC but it seems like everyone is ridiculously good on there or they are hacking. Probably the first one lol.

I use to think I was good at this game playing money maps =( GaaaaHHHHHHHH!

I play. I use ro.lex-venom on west.

Mostly i just recommend looking for pickup games in “op tl-west” on west. : ] good way to meet players and one of the most busy foreigner channels.

Name is HarmtaroAdun ;o

Seconded what red.venom said about op tl-west. Def a good spot for games or even obs.

@Siky: bish lez go

If I fix my desktop I’ll play some SC even though I try to play Terran without the APM to go with it =[ B.net tag is MCMcEmCee.

In any case Protoss is probably the easiest to start feeling out the game with. Powerful units, learning macro is easier because things are expensive and build slow, plenty of simple openings that branch into a lot of powerful tech trees.
Zerg doesn’t really teach you SC as well because sometimes you just decide to do something and it works way better than it should… and sometimes you don’t do anything particularly wrong and you lose. Like one game your early lings kill a bunch of workers, the next game they die and then the guy expos and runs you over midgame. One game your muta harass kills a ton of SCVs/marines/turrets/supply depots and the next game your mutas can’t keep the MMF force from pushing out before your lurkers are ready. One game your scourge will wipe out science vessels or corsairs like nothing, then the next game you can’t stop them from getting huge fleets.

Wow WTF. Flash is paired with Jaedong for the third consecutive time.

Flash is a beast. My money’s on him to win the whole thing, or at least make it to the final.

I’m now eagerly awaiting the next stage of the tourny, and for english versions of group B to be posted. I’ve watched all the other groups except B now.

4 toss, 3 terran, 1 zerg. Who do you guys think is going to go all the way? Or what race?

Why do people keep calling him flash? His handle is Light. Tasteless was just saying the name wrong. And is probably going to be a Terran player that takes it though I wouldn’t be surprised if a Toss player stole it. This year’s maps are really bad for Terran in general and Zerg rarely make it through.

Light didn’t advanced Flash did Flash is from group A buddy.

Xiii, Flash won 3-0 in group A. Light, who Tasteless also kept calling Flash from time to time, lost 0-3 in group D.

I’m talking about Flash, not Light.
