They said “don’t worry, it’ll be as good as ggpo”, they said that they did not licence ggpo because their netcode would be better. I’m not seeing it. I think they just should have used GGPO - the community was already happy with that.
/assumes the real reason is a complete unwillingness to pay any licence fee to anyone anytime.
i actually agree with KY. I’m an “sf1/sf2-era baby.” So I guess I’m a moron too? I’ll keep this really short and basic since I don’t want to write a novel on it. I am not a fan of option select. which one button throws are. This is especially true in sf2 games. I am a firm believer that if you fuck up on something, you should be punished, and for the most part, one button throws do not fit there. I also, personally, like having more control over my character, rather than having the cpu decide if my input should be a throw, or an attack (option select). This is why I am not a fan of proximity moves as well, but that’s another story.
This is just personal preference and in no way do i think the current system is bad. as a matter of fact, i think it shouldn’t be changed for hd simply because it wouldnt be sf2-like, making throws as a command. I just like 2 button throws more, less scrubby and random
Show me somewhere in print where they said they weren’t using GGPO because they were going to do better. All they’ve ever stated was they are making their own and they are trying to deliver the best console fighting game netcode possible.
I’m not defending the current state of their online play, but it’s fucking ignorant to think it’s as simple as writing Ponder a check.
There’s a host of potential problems with bringing in an outside contractor to work on a product. If you don’t understand that then I’m guessing your work experience hasn’t dealt with the realities of large corporate organizations.
I’d say throws in SF2 are done in a way that should never be done again. The whole throw/perfect reversal thing is all sorts of messed up and unnecessary for games. It’s gross and abusable and difficult and (blahblahblah)
But that DOESN’T mean it doesn’t work well in SF2. I wouldn’t want it changed – not in the least. Remember, you can like and dislike things, but sometimes the things you dislike just work in one environment while the things you do like wouldn’t work well in another environment. I think Sabre has the right idea here.
Honestly I probably wouldn’t have spent much time with it either. It’s the same 6-character crap that was shown at E3 and BoD and there was only one setup anyway, so even if you wanted to play you would have had to wait. It was basically as un-hype as it could possibly be. I know I would have spent more time with SF4 or practicing for my tournament games or going to bars or whatever.
i know my review of the patch is late, evo and all…
wow. i gotta say, I was a lot more hopeful of this beta patch =( while the game still seems fine under the same optimal conditions that makes the old beta seem fine, it still is really hard to play in less than optimal situations. rollbacks and fast forwards are greatly improved, but definitely at a cost. now the game gets a lot more “janky” and “jittery.” It just seems like the game starts animating really weird.
I honestly havent played it too much, due to the fact I was at evo all weeekend. But from the couple games I played, I cant tell if the new smoothing is worse or more tolerable. Overall, less than optimal conditions are still “BLEH,” unfortunately.
It’s much nicer now that the xbox doesn’t crash. But it sucks that joining a game has like a 5% success rate now. =/
Ken’s invincible dp is gone!!! Thank god! Ken is my main, and I thought the dp was entirely too scrubby, when mixed with all of the new ken properties. Just as long as it’s better than ryu’s =)
Wow the patch made the online play like shit. It’s almost as bad and very much resembles hyper fighting lag with dropped inputs, slow jerky animations etc. It’s like they decided to take a step back on purpose.
I felt like deleting this shit off my HD after playing 10 games of garbage.
Well, I just got back from Evo and played about 30 games of the new beta. I’m not enthused.
I didn’t see any big rollbacks (yay), but the game feels completely jittery and a little laggy all the time, even over sub 100ms connections. The characters movement is not smooth at all – theiy jiggle around like the TV is vibrating or something, even when they’re just jumping around or not doing a move. It feels like they’ve added input delay or something else to screw with move timing. I had a hard time reversing or softening tick throws and missed lots of fairly easy stuff like sweeping Ken after a whiffed jab DP.
It seems to me like they’ve made some trade offs that improve the game in the worst case, but actually make it worse in the average case.
