I’ve been trying to buy a PS2 Saturn pad for a couple of years now but the going price is a huge turnoff. Is the dpad on the original Saturn pad better?
The controller has a Genesis style plug. You can see it better below. He means you’d need a Genesis->USB adapter to use it with a PS3 or PC, but it’s probably not worthwhile.
No trouble at all. In fact, even kara-throws are pretty easy with this pad. I’m trying to get myself to sue a stick instead soon, but this pad is awesome. I’ve had no trouble completing a lot of the hard trials with it. In fact, it took me only 1 sitting to do chunli’s 4 and 5 hard trials. I’m pretty impressed.
I’ve just ordered 4 more saturn pads from ebay. 2 black and 2 white. mostly for backup.
ive got 2 playsega ones left (one will be going out as a gift), and my ebay saturn pad that i just got today.
one comparison i can make right off is the shoulder buttons… they are MUCH nicer on the ebay (SLS) pad. they dont require quite as much force to press. and overall the entire controller feels a lot less cheap.
also if you order some from yewelong, he is in china, so it’ll take a few weeks to get your stuff (just fyi for anyone who hasn’t ordered one before)
The Playsega ones are decent controllers but with your high praise I decided to order a few black SLS pads from your ebay link. Fingers crossed on whether they are quality but you seem just as discerning as I am about gamepads so they should be good. Thanks.
Yeah, this is the first time i’ve really used the saturn pads, and the playsega ones are not terrible by any measure. but overall, there seems to be some state of quality on the SLS pads that the playsega one is lacking. People have googled the model number for the PS pads and it came back with one that seems somwhat bootlegged. but i think sega at the very least had some kind of info on the pads and made an informed choice on what would give them the best yield for them.
I still say the shoulder buttons are about 10x better on the SLS pads though, my PS pad’s are rather stiff.
Yeah the Playsega shoulder buttons are a little too clicky. The D-pad and face buttons are really good though. If it was in black like the ebay ones I ordered then I wouldn’t mind the shoulders as much. I might keep the Playsega one but if the ebay ones are infinitely better then i’ll sell it.
Dav3yb did you cancel your VIP subscription from Playsega too?
As I’ve already mentioned on the PLAYSega USB Pad thread, the aforementioned pads are total duds. After less than a day, and a couple of playthroughs on FBA & GGPO, the down direction on one of my pad’s d-pad stopped functioning completely. Down diagonals are completely shot as well. And I’m not the first, nor the last person who has complained about the d-pads on these controllers going to shit either out the box or after a few playthroughs. PATHETIC.
I’m glad I only ordered two, but still, there went $40 (along with that STUPID VIP subscription which I’ve never used) down the drain. I’m keeping the other pad which I got in storage I suppose. I’m having a lot of trouble opening up the damaged pad, so I might just have to chuck it if I can’t futilely open it up and try to fix whatever the hell’s wrong with it.
STAY AWAY FROM THE PLAYSEGA PADS. They’re re-branded bootlegs. The proof is in their model number.
I’m still interested in Saturn pads though, but don’t have no bank account, therefore no PayPal. Is there anywhere else other than eBay in which I can buy these official (I hope) USB Saturn pads?
You don’t need a bank account to buy things using PayPal. You only need one for receiving payments if you are a seller. You can just use a credit or debit card to make purchases.
The playsega controllers are indeed thrash, both of mine broke in under 4 days… the right direction lost its spring and stopped responding, though the actual d pad is intact…
i also have old white SS USB pads with coloured buttons, i got off ebay in march, and the D pad literally snapped off those ones… in less than a week…
I’m thinking of doing a little surgery, and adding the d pad mold from the playsega one to the ebay bootlegs, maybe then I’ll finlally have a saturn usb controller I can rely on?
I haven’t played on anything like a Saturn pad since I owned a Genesis way back in the day. Granted, I’ve only used the six button Genesis pad but I’m sure they feel similar. Now, ever since SFIV came out I’ve been obsessed with joysticks, to the point where I’ve purchased four, modded three of them (the fourth is a TE, it’s excellent right out of the box), and made a complete custom. But lately I’ve been bit with the “old school platformer” bug and I’ve found that the dpad on my 360 pads are garbage, as are the dpads on my Logitech USB pads. I was considering ordering two of the PlaySega pads but then I read a ton of reviews on the ‘day of release’ and I didn’t hear a lot of good things.
Luckily, I found someone selling a barely used Mad Catz SFIV fightpad for something like twenty bucks and I picked it up right away. So far, after playing a ton of platformers on the PC and on the 360, I’ve found it to be nothing short of amazing. The dpad looks ‘floaty’ but it handles really nice, unlike the 360 pad, and the buttons have a good amount of ‘clickiness’ to them.
Anyways, sorry for the long comment, but basically I just wanted to know WHY so many people are into the Saturn USB pads when there exists something that is imo easier to get a hold of, the Mad Catz fightpad. Are there any reasons why people haven’t discarded the Saturn pads and went to the MC fightpad, other than personal preference or nostalgia, since the fightpad is ‘technically’ superior?
I’ve never had a USB or PS2 Saturn pad break down on me yet but you could probably replace the dpad (or the whole pad casing) with an actual Saturn model 2 pad. You just know those will last.
Also, my PS3 Madcatz Fightpad that I got last February still works fine.
