We could try those… But I really don’t want to play by Smogon rules.
Didn’t Pokemon Online have settings so that you didn’t?
PO has a Smogon-Specific Server…and then servers for everyone else, so I would assume. Plus, Smogon is leaving PO to go to PS, so if you want to avoid it, PO would be the best.
But PO is taking longer to update with BW2, and if you’re that adamant against Smogon’s rules, there’s always the fun of running into B/W-Kyurem while BW2 is still settling in.
They mostly talk about MMORPGs but a lot of these problems can be seen in Pokemon as well.
Power creep in Pokemon has gone both ways over the years… For example, lets take quite possibly the most popular example, Snorlax. Snorlax was extremely good in RBY (It and Tarous would always have to be either used or have a counter ran or else they would run a train on your team) and probably the most powerful Non-Legendary in GSC, and yet got screwed by the newer Generations introducing newer threats that it just couldn’t handle. Gen 3 didn’t really give it anything workable; though it was still very good, it was not the beast GSC made it. Gen 4 reworking the Physical and Special mechanic hurt it more than helped it (Plus… ya know… Close Combat), and Gen 5 introducing all the new fighting types and making offense even more popular made it go to UU. Still, some old Pokemon have found new lives thanks to slight changes over the times (Dream world abilities, the Physical/Special split, Scizor getting Bullet Punch, Gen 3 ablities, Scizor getting Technician, New Items (especially the Choice ones), and most importantly Scizor getting Bullet Punch and Technician.) Personally I think that if Gamefreak reworked the base stats of older Pokemon a bit they could at least attempt to combat the power creep when they decide they need to print more money and start on Gen 6.
The Power Creep has definitely swung both ways, but up until now only 2 pokemon have remained OU since the days of RBY (Gengar/Starmie). Tarous was a fucking monster in RBY: STAB’d normals, great speed base, Blizzard to take down its counters–incredible goddamn. It’s hard to believe that he went to such fame to depths of RU, but that’s how pokemon has transitioned over the years and how we look at who gets new toys/what is broken/etc.
Suicune was arguably the best pokemon outside ubers in RSE. Nothing could stop him once he got going, and if he had spikes support you could just forget about it. Much like Snorlax, he has fallen from grace as being this unstoppable force to just really good in some situations. Some pokemon continue to dream of finally moving up the ladder, like Flareon. Interesting stat spread, but plagued by horrible moves to be made of use. Some pokemon have gotten new toys over the years to remain consistently relevant, like Gyarados. Some pokemons jobs are becoming harder to pull off, like Blissey and the introduction to Psyshock and Choice items.
Flareon is Game Freak’s butt monkey. Many things change over the years but one thing doesn’t. Flareon will always be ass.
The problem is the base stats of these older pokes are being nearly overshadowed by the new gen who share almost legendary stats in certain departments. GF tries to mitigate this problem by retroactively adding gimmicky traits and calling it a day instead of addressing the problem directly. Secondly, I loathe that instead of dealing with typing inconsistencies and stat disparities directly, the keep stacking very specific moves that only a select Pokes can learn in a vain attempt to equalize said unbalanced typings.
Like Charizard, one of the flagship pokemon is relegated to doing the same gimmicky bullshit because of Stealth Rock, all the while Defog (a former HM) still only removes Stealth Rock on your side of the field? Does that make any fucking sense whatsoever?
Wow, competitive pokemon has so many rules… Can someone explain to me why there are so many bannings? http://forum.pokemonshowdown.com/topic.php?t=1711
Species Clause- For variety sake, and I assume some busted things can happen if you’re rocking more than one poke.
Sleep Clause- Pretty self explanatory. Sleep, especially in Gen 5, is a busted status, even moreso thanks to Spore which has perfect accuracy. Without it, Breloom could come in, Spore everyone, set up and annihilate for free.
Evasion Clause- For annoyance sake. It’s an attempt to try and make the game less luck based. I wouldn’t say it succeeded all too well, but it certainly beats coinflips of actually touching your opponent.
OHKO Clause- There are moves and abilities that make it so your next move doesn’t miss. These with perfect accuracy would be straight annoying…so yeah.
Moody Clause- Yeah, this ability is ridiculous. It was making things like Bibarel almost Uber status.
Aldaron’s Proposal- Long story, needless to say there are a good amount of people unhappy with it.
SmashPass Clause- …News to me.
Tiers, pretty much based on usage stats (which usually correlates to how good a poke is, not always though).
The game would be even more retarded without it. Sleep clause, for example, prevents pokemon like Breloom from incapacitating entire teams with spore and its strong attacks. Evasion Clause and OHKO clause removes excess randomness from the game. Moody emphasized luck too much as well. Aldaron’s Proposal banned the widely considered over-centralizing Swift Swim teams from OU.
Tiers seperate Pokemon into different power groups.
OU is the standard battling tier. Ubers is OU’s ban list. Pokemon like mascot legends and certain other pokemon deemed too powerful for OU (like Blaziken) are Uber.
UU is a tier for pokemon that aren’t used frequently enough to be OU. UU has its own ban list called BL (Boarder Line). BL pokemon have been deemed too powerful or over-centralizing to be UU, but aren’t used enough to be OU.
RU is to UU as UU is to OU. BL2 is to RU as BL is to UU.
NU is a tier for pokemon that aren’t used enough to be RU.
That Polytoed is named Brad. What an excellent name.
Is hacking difficult for the B/W gen? Does the game detect the “hacked” pokemon? (hacked as in just high IVs, natures you want, etc, none of that silly uber ultra pokeman stuff)
I’m asking this because I got Black and am going to have to slog through the game until it’s time to breed a team to fight in our silly work Pokemon league. I don’t feel like going through hatching egg after egg after egg and would very much like to know if someone could hack some OU tier pokemon for me to put EVs on and train. I’m not even trying to be creative. I’d just want like ten standards to make a team with.
I’d draw you a picture? Or Paypal you some money? Infernoman, you are still in here playing the pokeman right? CAN YOU HACK ME SOME DUDES?
But yeah, if that is possible, just PM me or something. I still have to get through the regular game.
Whelp I beat the game. Hurrah Excadrill. Now I am breeding some bros. BOOOOOOO.
My friend at work is going to help me get some pokemon, but if anyone here would be willing to help I need to get Mach Punch on a Conkeldurr and to do so need a chimchar I can’t get.
I also need a cacnea for Spikes on ferrothorn and possibly an extreme speed dratini. I’m still not quite sure what my team will be composed of though so I guess I should figure that out and them post up a needs list. Stupid Gamefreak making it hard to just fight your pals.
I can send you Chimchar and Cacturne if you have a 4th gen game. PM me.
All my Chimchar are lv 5, so you’ll need to evolve it into Monferno and see the move relearner. Cacturne was caught wild at lv 53 and has Spikes already. Both are male, of course.
Edit: Chimchar are lv 1. I forgot they changed the levels eggs hatch in Gen 4.
Edit 2: You need a Hitmonchan if you want both Mach Punch and Drain Punch on your Conkeldurr. I have a lv 5 Tyrogue. I can evolve it into Hitmonchan and teach it Drain Punch if you want it.
I thought I could do it with a meinshao and a monferno, but I forgot it only gets moves from the male.
I only have black. Sad faces all around. Thanks for the offer though.
pokemon uses the Home Improvement method of “fixing” things by adding with each generation.
MORE POWER!
(Haha. The Home Improvement philosophy is rather an apt description of the majority of instances of power creep.)
I keep forgetting this thread exists despite still being vaguely interested in Pokemon, partly because of alert’s caprice but mostly because of my not being able to give much of a damn about the 5th generation still. Given the problems that have plagued Pokemon since arguably the 2nd generation’s “fix” of Psychics raping everything, white shadow already pretty much nailed most of the reasons that I can no longer bring myself to care. It’s especially infuriating because, in terms of making things usable, some things would be so damn simple to fix.
looks at Shedinja, Stealth Rock, and Ice, Poison & Steel types
Oh well. I guess there’s always making your own hacks…
…Some people need to not be allowed near caffeine. Ever.
Those are seriously the only changes for Black and White 2: The Search for Yet More Money? Honestly?
…Wow, the newer generations just try less and less it seems, especially since all of those sprites save for Keldeo-R and maybe White Kyurem look as dumb as “Trubbish” or whatever the hell that ice-cream Pokemon is.
Perhaps, but Flareon at least has a chance to be noticed, especially since Eevee and its evolutions remain highly visible and popular after all this time despite being largely “power creep’d” out. Flareon might not be good, but it at least has a chance to be made decent, especially since its atypical spread means all it needs is a bit of a “nudge” moveset-wise to become a lot more useable and since at least one of its “brothers” is always OU.
When it comes to “true” “butt-monkeys”, you have Pokemon such as Farfetch’d who I’m convinced must have raped the parents of some Gamefreak or Nintendo employee for them to deserve the continual treatment they’ve gotten since their inception.
Farfetch’d in particular could so easily be made to involve into a more than decent Fighting/Flying type given all Fighting types 5th Generation was so intent on shoving down everyone’s throats…
There’s story changes and stuff. Smogon just listed changes that affect the game competitively.
Yeah, the actual stuff that BW2 put in as a sequel is FAR beyond any other “3rd” game Pokemon has put out, unless you really liked the half-assed Kanto from GSC and the remakes.
(I suddenly have this urge to facially scar someone with a bladed gun. Weird…)
I meant mechanically.
I normally do care about story, but given that I can’t bring myself to care about 5th generation and I’m only vaguely aware of the story there…yeah.
If that’s it “competitively” then, yeah, not much seems to have actually changed save maybe Landorus T, the least shitty of new genie forms, giving that stupid “Volt Turn” “strategy” the finger. There’s probably some Pokemon that benefits from the new tutors as well too, but does nothing to get at any of the core problems.
