(can vaguely guess what VGC stands for without knowing what it actually is)
Hunh. I don’t know how I managed to put this off all day despite having the tabs for it open all day, but I forgotten how much I liked Awkward* Zombie* or how much I liked some of the music from the game, especially when competently remixed. Speaking of the latter, I ran across this channel last night that seems to be solely dedicated to such and seems to have quitetheniceselection.
Hmm…I guess I should actually talk about the games, maybe. Due to the above (and my static Backloggery page), I suppose since yesterday I have been considering just restarting either my Sapphire copy or whatever the hell fourth generation was–I honestly can’t remember–just to be done with them. Not sure I want to spend that much time on it, though…
Speaking of generations I can’t really care about, I still feel somewhat obligated to ask: How are people generally liking the 5th generation? I know very little about it, but most of what I saw (and didn’t see–damn typing chart staying the same) didn’t seem that appealing to me.
I’ll have to read up on this PokeGen thing later on.
“Competitive DS scene” is such a weird phrase.
Given that Gamefreak couldn’t be bothered to fix the typing chart, it’s probably Dragon and Steel types out the ass with Stealth Rock flying everywhere like last generation. (I honestly can’t remember the name of the last generation right now. I’d almost like to say that I was doing it purely out of spite due to how absolutely I’m drawing a blank.)
(Ah, I don’t think I’ve ever used Wi-Fi “in person” if that’s what you mean.)
Man, I decided to go Smogon and look up some things about the 5th Generation after making that Persian joke in the lounge thread and, ugh, things look even dumber than I was aware of. What the fuck were they thinking with Moody/Inconsistent?
I know what you meant in the Persian case. I was just feigning ignorance because I couldn’t think of a good crack to make off of preferring flexibility to technical skill.
That and I was hoping that you would respond with something more substantive, but hope is once again proven to be a futile effort.
yeah I should check out smogon also, I haven’t really been playing lately just waiting on the G5 Tiers. I caught Tornadus but I still haven’t gone to the desert resort and catch that other one.
Assuming you play with Smogon’s tiering (who doesn’t, competitively), the TC regularly updates the tier lists for Ubers, OU, BL (lol Kyurem), UU, RU, and LC.
Voting took place week to determine the fate of five OU Pokemon: Garchomp, Thundurus, Deoxys-S, Excadrill, and Latios as to whether or not they should be sent to Ubers. It seems my boy Garchomp was once again banished to Ubers by a “supermajority.” (55-17), i.e. 2/3 + 1 vote. :shake: Though Thundurus did not get a supermajority of votes (46-26), because it did get a majority of votes to be banned, it’ll automatically be “suspect” for the next round of votes taking place July 18. The latter three Pokemon I mentioned were voted in favour of not being banned. :xeye:
I haven’t screwed around with Pokemon Online yet, but given what I’ve read on Smogon, Excadrill seems like it should be beatable even if Sandstorm is up and it still has an Air Balloon for some reason. So, yeah, I can’t see it being banned to Uber like Garchomp, since Garchomp’s stupid Sand Veil ability makes the game boil down to luck even when it shouldn’t. Not really feeling Latios–fucking Dragon types–sticking around, especially if Thundurus is still “Suspect”, though I can unfortunately see why only Thundurus is Suspect if Soul Dew still isn’t around.
Wait. Does this mean that Salamence isn’t banished back to Uber yet? I mean, I figure I’ll have to use a Steel type to deal with Outrage/Draco Meteor regardless of its presence, but I’m just wondering given how long it took to ban his last time.
Regardless of the answer to that, I will now take the time to also laugh at Kyurem, especially given how much of a joke Frozen World/Glaciate is.
Thundurus being suspect is surprising to me, actually. I would of figured that everyone would of agreed in perhaps sending it to ubers due to its great typing, 111 base speed, and ability to hit hard even as a mixed sweeper. I’m guessing small things played it’s part, like Stealth Rock and common Ice weaknesses. There’s no chance of Garchomp ever becoming OU again, which is sad because I’ve had hopes for the longest now.
Much like Blaziken, it’s possible that Excadrill can share the same fate being too powerful in the SS. But, Blaziken had speed boost, so it would be fast as hell regardless of weather control and could still SD up its ATK. I can see people using Excadrill and SDing up on switch counters, then sweep. There’s not a lot of things that can take a SD STAB EQ.
Soul Dew Latios is amazingly powerful, there’s no question it should be banned. But without SD, it can be suspect. I don’t see them banning Soul Dew just for the sake of using Latios in the OU metagame. I think that’s the reason they sent Latias back to ubers when they saw how powerful she got with it.
To my knowledge Latias has never been in Ubers in Gen 5, and currently she’s OU (rightfully so).
LO Latios is too beast imo, but his part Psychic typing is what keeps him in OU (lol Pursuit weakness). btw Soul Dew hasn’t yet been released for B/W, therefore there’s no reason to consider it atm.
Ha, screw Smogon rules this generation. I’ve been playing Nintendo’s own flat battle rules on random wifi with GOOD Japanese players, and know what? It’s great. No sleep clause, Blaziken is allowed, Garchomp is allowed, etc, all of these things are apparently more than beatable, and thanks to team preview, the game works without a bunch of fiddly rules. “Overpowered” pokemon are a lot more manageable when you know for a fact that they’re coming and you can choose a proper lead to fight their team
No need to memorize ban lists, no need to worry about how the latest “vote” (lol) went, etc.
I’d also argue that true competitive play has nothing to do with Smogon – the actual official tournaments don’t give a damn about Smogon’s rules
Smogon calls it “power creep”. Basically the base stats for the new Pokemon are higher on average than in previous generations. For example Archeops, Darmanitan, and Conkeldurr all have a Base Stat of 140 for Attack, while Haxorus has a Base Stat of 147 for Attack. Following closely behind Excadrill, Escavalier, and Gigalith have a Base stat of 135 in their Attack stat.
To further put things in perspective, 8 of the top 25 Pokemon with the highest Attack stat (all of the Pokemon I mentioned plus Zekrom) were introduced this generation! :looney:
I’ve noticed no mixed sweeper sets for Hydreigon yet, I expect that to change examining his 105 ATK base.
I’ve personally ran something like
@Naive Nature | No EV spread (for it’s Ingame) Life Orb
EQ
Crunch
Draco Meteor
Dragon Puse/Fire Blast
This set has amazing coverage for a mixed sweeper and takes advantage of his dual STAB typing in Dark/Dragon. Draco Meteor for denting anything that doesn’t resist, EQ hits steel hard and Fire Blast for Defensive Skarmory/Bulky Grass Types. Crunch destroys Celebi, and DP for hitting anything hard while peserving your SP. ATK
