Official Diablo 4 Thread : Hype train departing

Death has to mean everything. Otherwise, why even level up? Why find new gear? Why learn new skills? Why fight strategically? Because you want to avoid DEATH. Not because you want to avoid a 15 second run back to the place you just died.

Casual

Bring back the exp loss when you die.

Whoa, hey now, nobody is going to throw around the “C” word in here in regards to other players. Keep it civil.

Sorry :frowning:

I started to hit confirm with 100 Fists (2 hits of Blazing Fists)+ Deadly Reach (Final hit of Foresight), when used with Combination Strike, it makes for some fun DPS. Especially with the Blazing Wrath rune from Breath of Heaven.

I can’t wait to hit 60 and start having fun in Inferno. And by fun, I mean HATE.

How far are you so far Odin? Add me, clu, and Rabbit.

As for my Monk build, from left to right on the hotbar:

  1. Breath of Heaven, with damage boost rune
  2. Serenity, with healing rune
  3. Blinding Flash, with rune to make it last longer (this works on EVERY damn boss, although sometimes I swap it out for 7 sided strike)
  4. Mantra of Healing, with energy shield rune

left click is Fist of Thunder with thunder clap rune (so I can teleport and chase down fleeing enemies)
right click is Lashing Tail Kick, with vulture claw kick rune (so I can knockback, and set on fire, in case I get swarmed)

passive skills are Seize the Initiative, Pacifism, Transcendence

in the off chance I don’t dodge an attack, it is very VERY hard to kill me now. Basically I die cuz lag prevented my Serenity from coming out in time, or I get over swarmed and my team flees, or I run out of pots. Pretty much like Diablo 2

and I found two legendary yesterday…great items, too bad the stats were ASS (monk helm with 33% chance of causing a couple hundred bleeding damage, and a slew of other godly stats, but it has Intelligence and Strength, and then some mage sword with uber high intelligence)

If I call you an idiot, are you going to resort to fat jokes again, or will your flames actually have some semblance of competence and/or comedy? Because nothing’s worse than an incompetent flamer who isn’t funny but really, really thinks his flames are the stuff of comedy gold.

I level up, find new gear, experiment with new skills, and try not to die because these things are fun. Also, you’re arguing for why death is valuable to give meaning to playing the game (which is silly), then talking about how the penalty (the run back) is inconsequential; doesn’t make sense.

Hardcore mode gives value to character death, should that truly be what you want. Me, I find no meaning in having to retrieve my corpse, because there’s no meaning to having to retrieve my corpse, or losing gear/experience, or any of that noise. It’s non-existent, and a game mode exists already for those who delude themselves into believing it’s important.

There is no point to that grind and leveling up if you can’t put it to use by overcoming defeat.

Hardcore is not part of this discussion, nor should is it a valid argument against a death penalty because the game still flat out kills you for no reason, thus making hardcore merely a novelty to say “look what I have done”.

Then there is definitely no meaning in losing 10% durability, and being able to be revived. You are not punished for your mistakes, and thus you have nothing to learn or gain from death. It makes for a hollow experience that holds your hand from start to finish without making you get any better at the game.

I agree, smexy fat man.

But I happen to think the rare and unique mob stats are utter wet, hot, hepatitis-infected garbage, and seriously need to go away.

I also have issue with the drop system, amd Bizzard’s alleged “reasoning” for it.

Farming bosses is fun.

So is getting great drops off of rares and uniques.

You know what else?

Diablo 2 did BOTH.

And well.

Why should D3 break what didn’t need a Magic Hammer applied to it?

Also, the stats on items are complete bullshit.

Almost every belt has strength on it.

Only one class uses strength.

Dumb.

I don’t have to insult you. Your insecurities bleed through your defensiveness. Just calm down.

 @ you calling anyone defensive.

Fine, let’s take hardcore mode out of the discussion.

The penalty for dying in D3 is:

  • Loss of durability.
  • Loss of progress in boss fights.

Impactful? Yes: I’m going to lose gold to fix my gear, and I’m going to have to start a boss encounter from scratch. I’m punished for my mistake and I’m trying not to make it again.

The experience isn’t hollow; I have to get better to prevent this from happening. You’re claiming otherwise, which is objectively wrong. D2’s death penalty, especially the EXP loss, certainly impacts me as well, but in a way that makes me not want to play. And if we go down that path to its logical conclusion, why not D1’s death penalty where you lose all your gear? Or even harsher, where that lost gear can’t even be picked up again? Or even harsher than that, permanent loss of your character? (D3 lets you play in an environment where that last one is the rule, btw.)

The death penalty in D3 is sufficient. It doesn’t have to be harsher. It doesn’t contribute to a hollow experience. You die, you take a hit, you get back in the fray and actually play the game. It’s well thought out.

Considering boss grinding is no longer the focus of D3, that also means nothing. When random elite mobs are 100x harder than any boss, and drop better loot, there is little reason to even fight bosses other than progressing through each difficulty, or achievements.

Now, this discussing is essentially breaking down into “I know you are but what am I” so I’m going to just say this. Death effects everything. It is the reason you do anything you do in any game that has ever been made in which you can die. You want to preserve your life to progress, and progress to preserve your life. There are many many games that do this correctly, and Diablo 3 is just not one of them. Death has no weight to it, much like the rest of the game. It’s fluffy, cushioned, padded, and has those fake wood chips made out of tire pieces so we don’t tear our skin off when we fall because we didn’t have our shoes tied.

If we’re doing final thoughts, here’s mine: you’re wrong, not only about D3 but gaming in general. This is shallow thinking that seeks to vilify any game where a failure condition still rightfully allows for a chance to experience the game.

I like Diablo III. I think it’s really fun and I got my money’s worth.

I feel like a FOB Chinese dude at a rap concert when I say that. Everyone here be hatin’ on whatever, it’s kind of sad.

I bought D3 under the pretense that I didn’t have to understand what the fuck shit like magic find, champion mobs, and any other nerdy terminologymeant to get top tier equipment, stop making me think. Also I refuse to use auction house.

It’s Diablo. You click on shit, it dies, you level up and get loot.

I don’t see what the problem is. Then again, when it comes to games, I’m easily satisfied. I just care if I’m having fun.

It’s all a matter of taste, and opinion really. It just seems as though my opinion isn’t too popular.

It is a manifold problem.

#1. New kids
#2. Rabid fan boys
#3. Fan boys in denial

I have hope for the lattermost.

I am still hanging on the cusp of remaining one of them.

But there need to be gameplay patches out the ass.

And for fuckssake, let me remap Enter.

I think you guys are genuinely running out of shit to hate on about the game if you all are seriously debating the fucking life and death system of Diablo III.

Man, life and death is the core of all games. Though sometimes its called winning and losing.

However, I’ve had a problem with death in D3 since I heard about check points and revival.

Trust me, mandingbro, I still have a lot to hate on in this game.
