Official Diablo 4 Thread : Hype train departing

You know, I never played the Diablo series until after Diablo 3 was announced back in August 2008. At that moment in my life, I was extremely into the whole fantasy genre. If it had mages, warriors, and a good story I was all over it. So, I picked up D1 first and installed it on my widescreen monitor and sat back not knowing what the fuck to expect. Within TEN minutes of playing the game, I knew that it was THE best PC game I played to date. There was NO hand holding and tutorials, just stairs leading down to Diablo.

Story? The story in D1 was awesome because of this strewn about in the world:

The Butcher from D1 was great. You know why he was great? Because he didn’t announce himself so that you could prepare to kill him. He FUCKED you up unannounced when you walked in the door. AHHHH FRESH MEAT… not… Fresh Meat AHHHHHHH.

Then D2 rocked my socks off (in 2008) because of the multiplayer aspect and classes in the game. Immediately after installing the game and loading it up, I am presented with this:

I knew I was in for a treat

D3 doesn’t suck, it just doesn’t feel like Diablo… I’m still waiting on that ‘moment’ in D3. Most of my friends who are enjoying D3 right now never played Diablo 1 or 2, so for them it is amazing. Unfortunately, they will not give a shit about the game in another month or two.

Even D2s secret level made more sense than D3s…

i guess the reason i am not so disappointed with this game is because

  • the cow level is the hardest area of an entire act, so i will consider the game done and beaten when groups are able to just plow through that. i already know storyline bosses are a joke. (no mortar and fire chains.)
  • i am comparing vanilla d3 to vanilla d2. a game that was only really hard because there were no unique exceptional/elite items. i don’t really think it’s fair to compare v1 of d3 to version 1.13 of an expansion pack of d2.
  • it’s still pretty damn fun regardless, and i haven’t even really started playing the barbarian, nor experienced what it is like to wear high-end non-mf gear.
  • the auction house is truly, truly amazing.
  • no smiters

I agree it’s fairer to compare D3 1.0 to D2 1.0 but at the same time its been 12 years. Well, 2 years if you’re coming from 1.13 although 1.10 is when D2 really changed to what it is now and 1.10 came out 9 years ago. More than an ample amount of time for Blizzard to draw design ideas from.

I see D3’s situation as similar to the hate Civilization players gave to Civ 5 when it first came out. Civ 4 + Expansions was boss but vanilla Civ 5 despite doing some things right (such as no more combat units stacking) took a few steps back. Fortunately the Civ 5 exp coming out is re-adding some of the strategic design elements back like espionage and religion. The inevitable D3 expansion will likely do the same.

Wasteland 2 is coming out. Sequel to Wasteland, the spiritual predecessor of Fallout. Made possible through the Kickstarter model. Man in charge is Brian Fargo (founder of Interplay) with no publisher BS in the background to dance around. Get hype.

Depending on how well Wasteland 2 does we may even eventually get a Planescape 2.

Barbarian has a Frenzy rune that has a 20% chance of stunning an enemy called smite. Pair that up with a fast attack speed weapon (dagger/sword) and possibly on-hit stun from equipment. Won’t be 100%, but close enough for me.

Haven’t tried it out personally though, grinding out my barb for it.

My review: Playing d2 from 2000 to 2011 off and on, addicted at some points etc.

After playing the game for a bit and talking to a bunch of people who have also completed the game I have a few hard feelings with the game.

Inferno is “hard” but menial, repetitive and boring. You are screwed if you solo and run into specific types of champion mobs such as molten for melee which require extensive farming for resist gear to actually be able to do your job correctly. If you are a caster every single fight is kite to survive including boss fights.

Item scaling and randomization is made purely for the point of profit for blizzard. There are FAR too little stats and far too much randomization of the values of these stats on items, you can only do so much. Legendary items are out-classed completely by even magic items from inferno (minus a few), and there are rings that drop in normal difficulty that are better than any legendary ring in the game. These items need to be re-named “attempts at nostalgia” because for the most part the good ones have nostalgic names but are STILL out-classed.

Boss fights suffer the same sort of fate as WoW’s boss fights do. Don’t stand in fire, don’t get hit by tracking missiles and don’t tank and spank in every phase. The bosses in this game are basically WoW bosses with a diablo atmosphere and lore behind them, azmodan’s fight is no different than two of the bosses in WoW but together, belial? same thing.

Bosses in general are scripted and actually easier to do than many of the champion/rare mobs that can spawn while going through the acts later in the game.

Demon hunter is the easiest class to solo with because when played right you simply don’t get hit let alone die, monks and barbs come in at a close second with wizards and witch doctors being the bottom of the barrel (from my experiences playing with friends as well as others i know of).

The reason there is no PVP in this game is because simply put one attack can do up to 40,000 damage or more and people just don’t have that much life yet and won’t till they have tons of vitality from act 4 inferno items due to the scaling, also magda’s fight takes place in one of the pvp arenas they advertised which makes me go to think that without some HEAVY changes like things doing 5-10% of their actual damage it will be extremely hard to actually PVP and have fun due to some of the abilities and how they work (archon, monk dodging/heal bubble, barbarian multiple stuns etc).

The game is the definition of a dungeon crawler and blizzard knows that people want the best items in the game and they get 30% for people who want to sell items and get the cash to use elsewhere, it is also taxable income. This is the main point of the game, slight difficulty to make it have some replay value and a plethora of farming to max out your character’s soloing ability to get more items to sell. In my opinion the game is good for what it is, but not something you should look to dump all your time into unless more grinding than Aion/WoW/Everquest is what you want to do with your time only to HOPE you get something good rather than be guaranteed to eventually get what you want like in those games.

Lots of people might disagree with me, but I think that unless you read the books and really enjoyed the lore of the series as well as loving the purity of this sort of dungeon crawler it isn’t the game for you. The lore is what kept me interested in normal, the rest of the game i would not have continued if it wasn’t for friends playing and now I might not even bother with that since it is even more repetitive than any MMO I’ve played (yes I know it isn’t an MMO).

No one cares about world firsts in D3. Are you kidding me? This isn’t WoW.

All in all, I like D3. My main gripe with the game is it’s length. It doesn’t feel as long as it should, or maybe it’s been 8-9 years since I played D2. But I’m totally feeling the skill trees, I like seeing what I come up with, without having to re-roll, I just wish there was a way to switch between builds faster. Currently, my favorite spell for the Monk is Exploding Palm (sad I know) and I’m trying to build around that. Another favorite is Wave of Light, I’m also experimenting with Mystic Ally

Even if I can just plow through shit with Sweeping Wind/Cyclone Sheild /Seven Sided Strike combo I want to see what I can do with other skills.

I like this game, but I feel as if the auction house completely ruins what Diablo has always been about.

so a bunch of unemployed people in europe beat the last boss in a game which rewards time spent

game is officially dead guys. its been a hell of a 4 days nice knowing you all.

there are omega sad people in every game. some dude hit 60 in WoW a couple of days after release and that was with all the server problems that seem to plague blizzard game launches. somehow WoW is still trucking along and manages to attract sad people every day.

diablo isnt even one of those games where you gotta be hardcore and fight for raid spots…its OKAY to be a casual! breathe!

Left handed gaming mouse? Damn, I can’t help you with that one.

I’m trying to understand why exactly my monk is getting on a shit ton of regen from my attacks. She’s getting onwards of 500 to 1300 hp on my attacks. The only thing that clues me in as to why is my draining fist weapon, coupled with Mantra of Conviction Overawe. It is ridiculous.

Here’s my only complaint for the game so far:

How in the hell are you supposed to read the chat box? I started visiting the different chats available and due to the small size + bright blue font I can’t read anything. There isn’t even a dark background that shows up behind the text when moused over.

Monk has that passive skill where you gain HP for every 1 point of spirit you spend. And then a TON of moves fully recharge monks spirit. So long story short, you just keep spamming spirit charging attacks, then spend spirit, which does damage AND heals you, and then repeat until whatever you are punching is rewarding you with the shinies

edit: There is a song that plays in the background, with violins. Its absolutely mesmerizing, and I’d love if any of you know the name of it.

Leah

Spoiler

So I was asking around earlier. In Diablo 1, Leoric’s son got possessed by Diablo, and when Diablo was killed at the end, the child was free. Now the same shit happens in Diablo 3, only Leah becomes Diablo. So when you defeat Diablo and her tits, does Leah get saved, or does she die, or wtf?
And why does her mom just, get away?

edit #?: Yeah, that song is Evil Reawakened. Such a fucking dope song in that game.

answer

Spoiler

The child died. Leah died.

if youre playing a demon hunter, and want to troll a monk or barb in your party

on siegebreaker in act 3, wait till he does his pick up move, and then spam stun grenade + cluster arrow (w/ dazzling rune) whenever hatred allows. if you do it right the boss gets stunlocked and never drops his poor victim

people usually freak out the first time; i just tell them their tanking skills are top notch

is the game pay per month?

Nope!

China. Get on they level:

Diablo III story

[details=Spoiler]My guess is that Adriah will be the main focus of plot in an expansion or something. Next xpac maybe? She’s still around, and if you notice in the ending cinematic, the Black Soulstone is still intact when Diablo dies.

That said, I’m not even sure what bosses are going to be in the expansions at this point. I mean, in Diablo II, going from Diablo to Baal made sense. In Diablo III, you knew the Lesser Evils were going to be part of the story (made sense given they were the biggest evils left in Sanctuary now that Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto are dead). What is left? Dunno. lol.[/details]

Three friends and I cleared the first third of Act I Inferno and were then join by Sleazoid. Since it was late, most of us called it before it was time to go dungeon crawl to The Butcher. Overall, Inferno is pretty challenging but highly rewarding. We certainly died a lot, but the increased drop rate of rares realy helped out. Regardless, it was really fun. Probably going to have to farm Act I for a while though…

ah ok thanks, i might pick it up, not sure if my pc could handle it tough, what is that image u posted, is it a joke or what ?

Whoa, that cover art looks some awesome!!
CHINA, WHY CAN’T YOU MAKE COVER ART FOR ALL GAMES!!
