According to the forums, Blizzard decided they would just change this outage into a maintenance period to fix some server issues. It could be hours.

Fucking hell this server downtime is annoying
Blizz server downs are always several hours at the very, very least.
From watching some streams, it seems that trash mobs are actually more of a threat than bosses. Maybe it’s just that all DPS is focused on the boss in these fights, maybe it’s just that some of the streams are high-level raiding groups, maybe it’s because people aren’t respecting the trash enough, maybe because it isn’t Inferno yet. How do you guys feel about this so far?

Blizzard has said during Q and A’s at Blizzcon that the best loot will drop from Champions. Champion monsters will also be given random power buffs to fight the player, like summoning walls to stop kiting or throwing bombs at range users. It’s a way to prevent people from running the same boss raids over and over which isn’t very compelling gameplay.

I suppose this is the answer to your question, but I really didn’t understand how it works though. I was able to play with some of my friends in Asia yesterday, and I was using the North American server. So does it mean that since I created my Barb using the NA server, I need to create a different character in order to play the Euro/Asia servers?
If you have magic items, those are the ones in blue, bring to to the guy and he will convert it… If you have a rare, he converts it… and yadda yadda yadda… You need to upgrade the dude so you can get better items…
