Official DBZ: Budokai 3 Thread

can somebody do a review of this game or something…hows the story mode this time around? is it worth gettin if you have the first 2? im thinkin about passin up on this one and just waitin on the newer one …

DO NOT PASS THIS GAME UP. It completely blows the other two games away.

On a high level of play, every fighter is different. The story mode is good except it is all text-based. No in-game cinemas like the first game but it spans the entire DBZ storyline. The length of the story mode varies depending on which fighter you use.

The game also has a very cool teleport system. You can teleport behind your opponent before they can blink and even the teleport itself can be countered. This leads to lots of mind games and even fake out moves.

The game also has a mode called Dragon Arena. In this mode you can continue to build up your fighters from the story mode (Dragon Universe). There are over a ton of CPU opponents you can fight ranging from very easy to super hard. Even better you can use passwords for your custom fighter and post it on the internet so other players can fight your character, or you can fight their fighters.

This game is well worth the dough.

GameSpot gave it a 8.2
IGN gave it an 8.0
1UP gave it an 8.0
IGO gave it an 8.4

This is one of the best games of '04, and you don’t even have to like DBZ to enjoy it. Trust me, you will not be disappointed with this baby.

Ginyu’s powerful in this game. He’s got one of the best overall combo platforms. His <-K+G makes his juggling life far easier, his chargable <-K starter leaves him beyond deadly, his good selection of stuns and cancels and his <-K+G when done in the air can actually be used as a starter to deal more damage.
So for example, if I use Ginyu’s <-K+G in the air while in the middle of a combo, you’ll just fall unconscious. Then I can do a KKKK(juggle) followed by ->PPPPPE into a strong jersey. If I do <-K+G from behind, its simply another stun.
Strong Jersey is an excellent move. Unblockable, undodgeable and using this to finish juggles makes for a great taunting/powering up set-up.

As for the review:

If you play fighting games just to get good and master the depth, the mechanics and all the good stuff to master in a fighting game, then don’t pass up this game. This game at high level play requires more skill than some of the other popular fighters (take SC2 for example). Even if you hate DBZ itself, playing this game just because its a fighter and exploring the depth is enough.
If you don’t like DBZ, and you don’t like fighting games, then pass this game.
If you like DBZ, then get this game.

I saw GI’s review of Budokai 3. Wow it is messed up. Dude said the game has clumsy controls and that it really isn’t a fighting game.
:lame:

If anyone has any cool combo or match vids, we’d love to see 'em

Are we going back to the whole debate about this game being better than SC2? Let’s stay away from that… afterall… we all know SC2 is the  BETTER game…

:china: :china: :china:

Right. . .

Anyway, I sent my PS2 to get modded, so if I’m needed to test anything, you’ll have to wait a few more days.

Anyone ever done any COM vs. COM matches on the highest difficulty or in Dragon Arena mode? It makes for some very epic battles.

If anyone is still playing this game, I need some help. I’ve been playing Z mode lately and it giving my thumbs a serious workout. Most of the time I end up when when the CPU screws up or when it fails to hit me with Dragon Rushes. When that happens I hit 'em with a death move, and TTC 'em like mad. They’ve spent all of their ki so they can’t do a thing to get out of it.

Also, so questions:
-Can you link TTC into regular combos? I’ve tried but I’m having a hard time doing it.
-What’s a good way to trap your opponents and use a death move on them? I’ve noticed some moves (Omega Shenron’s Dragon Thunder for example) will never hit unless you trap your oppoent to where they can’t dogdge it or TC away from it. Any advice?

-You can TTC into just about anything. Just requires practice.
-The only way to trap your opponents and use a death move on them is to use a combo that leaves them stunned long enough.

Having spent an hour or so with this game at fellow SRK member Shinrodimus’ house, I can honestly say: I’d buy and love this game…really. It’s just that the dub voices fuckin’ annoy the shit outta me. I was watching dbz 10 years before it was dubbed, and I STILL can’t stomach the mismatched voices. If only the producers weren’t such complete assholes as to not include a vocals setting in the options. At least you guys finally get to see the japanese intro to BK2. I have the video for the Japanese intro of BDK3 if it’s not unlockable (it’s about 15mb or so…just tell me where to send it)…the vocals make the intro 100X sweeter.

Maybe we should do a tier list of capsules. I think Meditation would def be in the top tier listings. Meditation or any skill that reduces the amount of ki used can seriously turn the tables in a fight. That means more TCs, higher level transformations with just 3 bars of ki, less ki for death moves, etc.

I still think the best capsule is Yakon… the fact that it equalizes SO MUCH between some mismatches just makes it too gamebreaking. As for meditation… well… I think it’s good at best, but not gamebreaking. Afterall, 3 slots is A LOT to dedicate, even if it’s a great capsule. Mixed blood would be nice, except that it’s limited to certain characters.

Sidenote: have you ever wondered why saiyan spirit can’t be used for bardock… seriously…

:china: :china: :china:

some characters like Kid Buu have a capsule that is like Meditation but it only occupies 1 slot. :wow:

As for Bardock not being able to use Saiyan Spirit, yeah that is odd. He is a full blooded Saiyan and he was not filler. Toriyama drew him in the manga.

wow that’s fucked up… well today am going to play with metal koller and kick some ass holla back with those power ups for kooler and frieza

Isnt his body swap really good? Especially -vs- cooler and his ship…

The way the game works in B3, you’d be lucky if you can even get Ginyu’s Body Swap off. Just ask Spralwers.

Meta Cooler is better than Cooler in his Final Form, IMO. Cooler is good in his Final Form but he becomes more slugish. I think they should have made the Space Ships 1 slot skills as opposed to 4.

I was playing a few days ago and it really dawned on me how tight Vegeta is. He may be more of a defensive fighter but he still falls in line of my top 10 favs in the game.

And does anyone in the game have any pokes that come close to being as good as Piccolo’s? So far, Piccolo is the poke king.

Dabura’s <-P’s are very effective pokes.
Gt. Saiyaman also has a crazy ->K+G starter. That thing has insane reach.

Thanks, Sprawlers.

Ah, Gt. Saiyaman. I hated him in B2 but in B3, they’ve improved him a lot. It really is unbelievable.

So I guess the top poke list would be similar to this:

  1. Piccolo
  2. Dabura
  3. Gt. Saiyaman.

Also, it looks like Dabura is far better with a sword than Trunks.

I’ve been playing the game for a month know. I hear that goku and piccolo are suppose to be some of the best. but why piccolo? he’s good, but how is he better than…let’s say brolly? or kid buu?

You know what really sucks is when you do all the work for coola & freizas break through capsules but then you can’t uses their cyborg forms. thats just :lame:.
