Baker isn’t that young. He’s 29 and he struggles vs. lefties (.624 OPS). He’s got a job though so that counts for something. If he can stick to hitting 5th for the Marlins that’ll help him.
Now this is interesting. I hate hate hate Chone Figgins as a 3rd basemen. I love love love Chone Figgins as a 2nd basemen. Jose Lopez also becomes more valuable as a 3rd basemen.

Chone Figgins’ relative lack of bat is better hidden at 2B, where he matches up pretty well with the league average line. So I do like him better at 2B than at 3B because the average 3B put up a line of .843 OPS last year.
However when you replace him at 3B with Lopez who projects to be a similar .760 OPS type hitter…then the move is kind of pointless. They already had a guy just like Figgins at 2B. I don’t get how Lopez gets more valuable as a 3B. If anything he gets less valuable now.
Fielding-wise I’m not even sure who’s better. I haven’t seen either of them play enough to say, but UZR says Chone Figgins is pretty much a league average 2B (last time he got 10 games or more at 2B was in 2005 with 42 games and a not good -2.2 UZR) and a pretty good 3B (18.8 UZR/150 in 2009).
On the other hand, UZR says Lopez is pretty much a league average 2B - he’s never really played 3B.
You essentially have two average 2Bs. Lopez has to at least match Chone’s defense at third for this move to break even, and in the end you still don’t have a league average hitter at 3B.
Makes sense to try the move at least. I think the infield defense hurts big time without Beltre at third though.

Uh yeah. I was thinking more in fantasy terms. I don’t like having 3rd basemen who hit single digit homeruns.
In real terms it’s probably a bad move but I’m not a Mariners fan so that doesn’t bother me. Let them try it out for a couple of weeks and then it fails miserably, Figgins and Lopez get their extra eligibility and everything goes back to normal. Win-win for everybody.
It’s a good spot. After the first 6 picks the next 20 picks or so are similar.

That isn’t the same. Sigley had an option between the two at the same time but didn’t see the other offer and then realized it was better, the Lebron trade was only discovered later and wasn’t accidentally ignored.
