Hey it’s debatable. The Oilers have had legit hall of famers and if Doug Weight could score 104 points during a rebuild I figure it’s worth honoring.
You forget that with the Nucks, we only had one scoring line. If another team could shut down the West Coast Express it was all over, and people used to blame Naslund and his line for losing in the playoffs but really, we never would have been there without him. He carried the team and did a lot of off ice stuff and community work. I don’t think the idea is honour his career but rather the fact he was a good guy and anyone would have been glad to have him.
I think that Naslund getting his jersey retired really lowers the standards. The honor of having your number retired used to be reserved for legends and not just really good players. The Canucks really trivialized one of the most sacred rituals in hockey. I loved Naslund but this is pretty outrageous.
Naslund is on the bottom 10% of that list when it comes to warranting a retired jersey.
It is indeed up to the club if they want to retire a number, but this doesn’t absolve them from neutering the tradition in the process.
ya i gotta agree with dropoff
if the penguins can retire a dude that had a CAREER RECORD of
76gp 12-32-44
but just because he died in a car accident, they retired his jersey, naslund is more than welcome to have his retired
vancouver is like carolina… they gotta retire whatever they can, bure should for sure be retired
but seriously… the canes retired glen wesley? lol terrible
and wtf is this!!
Retired Numbers: The Wild retired number 1, as a tribute to Wild Fans, on October 10, 2000.
and also the habs are just gonna retire every player that played during their glory years eventually
must suck to play there, you are limited to only 70 numbers
Bure started to dislike the Canucks organization when Pat Quinn was removed, that and constant injuries plagued him in the western conference plus who the hell would wanna work with Brian Burke m i rite?
Well Vancouver hardly ever plays the leafs anymore, so I didn’t see too much of him to be honest, although I do remember him in the world juniors. And yes he has the weakest shot ever, but it comes with the softest hands ever, I’m sure he’ll be good on someone elses team some day.
and the chicago cap issues continue as they matched that offer for Hjalmarsson at 4 years 14 mil.
quick someone make an 4 mil offer on Niemi and watch the hawks scramble to dump cap space/find a new goalie.
Rumor:
Chicago is going to place Huet on waivers and place him in the minors so they can sign Niemi. Any other team is allowed to pick him and his two year, ~$5.6 million contract up.
This will help significantly reduce their salary cap.
Or so I’ve read in the rumors.
edit: Niemi is in ‘arbitration pending’. I am not sure if another team can make an offer.
We all know Chicago’s defense was a big part of making Niemi look better, but still he looked good anyways. I wouldn’t offer Niemi 4 million a year. He just hasn’t proven himself so important.
