fyi GM’s are mighty pissed about how many games end in a shootout. I personally think shootouts are inherently wrong anywho:
Should be either 4 on 4 for a FULL OT period, or 5 on 5 for five minutes
And the shootout should be best of 5, not best of 3. Gives teams that DON’T exist on the backs of only 3 or so superstars (ie Pittsburghm Washington) against other teams that are built NOT to only force and win shootouts. Also increases the odds of players taking a chance and doing crazy shit on the shootout (which is what the NHL wanted in the first fucking place)

What they need to do is take out the overtime point. the whole point of it was to try and get teams to end games in OT instead of just holding on for a tie. The problem is now…someone is winning no matter what so it’s totally pointless. If your team sucks at a shootouts you better win that shit in OT or in reg or you aren’t getting a point. Or even make wins worth 3 points
I’m just gonna throw this out there, because it’s a thought I had before. Maybe you’ll agree, maybe not, but again, just throwing it out there.
Instead of the current points format, I was thinking of giving points like this:
3 pts for win in REG / OT.
2 pts for win in SO.
1 pt for loss in OT / SO.
0 pt for loss in REG.
It’s something I think would make teams play for a shootout less, as they would give less points to the winning team. The other thing I’d do to support this is increase the length of overtime from 5 to 10 minutes. 5 minutes just doesn’t seem enough to me when a full period is 20. That’s just 1/4 the usual time to get 3 points instead of 2.
The thing I do see crazy is if the game ends in OT. Winning team gets 3 and the losing team gets 1. Maybe could just use the 3 point distribution and only let the losing team have one if it goes to a shootout.
well the thing with OT, they never even used to have it. It’s 5 minutes because of the tv broadcast time.
Its an ok idea. i just think you shouldn’t be getting any points for losing ot or not. Its so hard to make up ground on people and doesn’t give the winning teams enough of a reward for winning when you got people gettiing points for losing. Like if you think of it this way. you could get 82 points in a year and never win a game.
I decided to check, and saw that the 02-03 Islanders made the playoffs as the #8 seed with 83 points (35-34-11). So yeah, I can see how a winless team can make it on OTL points alone. (though realistically, the odds of a team going 0-0-82 are beyond molecular, no matter how much faith I have in the Leafs doing it). What I was going for was making the shootout worth less to the team that wins it to de-motivate them from playing for a shootout.
yeah true…but then lets say you pick up 3 or 4 wins. you have a team that won 4 games out of 82 in the playoffs…i know it owul dnever happen…but the fact that it coul dis stupid.

but still i think if you got no points for losing, there wouldn’t be any part of the game both teams weren’t trying to outright win it. No point in leaving it up to chance in the shootout
