Astyanax was a solid action game for the NES. Fairly obscure, but I remember it being played on Nick Arcade or Video Power. I had no interest in it when I received it for Christmas. Went back to it years later and really enjoyed it. First time a video game ever made me sad, too.
Oh, and on the topic of old games that aren’t even remotely obscure, I liked Super Mario Brothers.
Fun Fact Captain claw was the toy that you used in shogo when you did the mission where you had to rescue the ladys cat from the building. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSDk1lsLMgA
this was obscure then because it was a no publisher mail order only shareware title, and many orders weren’t taken (like, 50 or so)
but now it’s finally freeware so you get to play it legit after 16 years of publisher hell
Basically this is a very early attempt at the first-person action RPG and it has some features that are pretty much commonplace now (grid inventory system, multiple classes, day/night cycles) and some not so commonplace (cooperative multiplayer, hand-made levels, eating carrots improving vision). This game originally came around the same time as Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall and was largely ignored, despite getting positive coverage on a few shareware sites like Happypuppy.com
It’s one of those games that sold poorly when it first came out, but got a big following later once people heard about all the acclaim and awards it ended up winning. Also didn’t help that it was lost in a sea of super quality games in 1998, especially on the PC (Half Life, Fallout 2, Baldurs Gate, Unreal, Starcraft + Broodwar, the PC port of FF7). It couldn’t have come out at a worse time. I wouldn’t call it obscure now, but it still probably doesn’t get the respect it deserves.
That sounds like a game I woulda liked back in the day. I 'm a sucker for fantasy games with heavy class systems. I looked up a vid…
Reminds me of a lower-res EverQuest with its big 'ol invasive interface and like a Wolfenstein/Doom-era shooter for its 2D “billboard” sprites. I didn’t play many PC RPG-type games back then (strictly console JRPG at that point), but whenever I see vids of stuff like this and Elder Scrolls I kinda wish I did. Good thing there’s DosBox!
Wasnt a normal pac man. Instead he walked and interacted with his world and you could feed him powerpellets or shoot him with a slingshot and piss him off. I used to do that all the time. hahaha
My favorite game when I was a kid used to be Urban Assault by Microsoft which came out in 1998. Though not a big hit, it was quite revolutionary for its time. And extremely dystopian
