Obs mx silenced

Hey guys,

Long time no tech talk…lulz… with the return of sfv and my wife not liking loud sticks I went for the silenced route again. I really wanted to try the obs mx from Bryan and pas but I noticed they didn’t have foam like hbfs because of how they work. I love cherry reds and the rubber o rings on all my mech keyboards and I have used various cherries on the version 1 hbfs. They work good but just like all the silenced buttons that use foam they lose some of the hardness. I finally got some obs mx and threw some rubber o rings on them. They work great. They don’t interfere with the adjusted sensitivity of the obs mx buttons but they do cut down on the bottoming out travel after the switch engages which is nice. I suggest the 50a .4mm hardness rings. They don’t feel as squishy ad other silenced buttons and they are super quick and durable. You can buy them cheap on eBay. If this has already been posted sorry hehe

Ps I let Bryan know too.

I will try this out for sure! good find!

you can pick up these o-rings on amazon also.

Awesome! I’m going try this out , thanks

yeah, they have different types, i would suggest the 50A hardness + the .4MM thickness, its personal preference though, the softer ones will dampen noise more, but give you squishier feeling and obviously the thinner ones will not decrease after actuation travel time much

This works pretty well

Are the reds generally the most popular switches for the OBS-MX? I don’t really like the reds for regular keyboard usage but I imagine they are probably one of the better choices for stick buttons?

Reds or blacks IMO

My experience has been that anything tactile just ends up feeling linear given how much force you usually hit buttons with compared to keyboard keys. You can feel clicky switches, but any rapid pressing of the same button or double-tapping will give you missed inputs due to the hysteresis, so I don’t recommend those.

Just something to keep in mind when using o-rings; they do dampen the sound and feel of mechanical switches, but as with keyboards they will raise the height at which your keycap/button top sits above the switch, especially if you go with harder rubber.

I agree about the bumps of browns and blues, you don’t REALLY notice them when pushing buttons hard, but you do a little.

As for the o rings raising the button, no they don’t MAYBE if you used 2 at once, but they don’t raise the button, they just make the button bottom out faster, which is still below the actuation point with 1 o ring.

I bought a bunch of Big and Little Kahuna pads from PAS for the Sanwa buttons on some of my other sticks. Then I took out my hobby knife and made this from one of the Big Kahunas.

They work QUITE nicely. Slightly less noise than with o-rings (at least with the 50A/.4mm rings), and a tad softer on the end of the press (kinda like Gamerfingers).
I wonder if PAS would make these an option with their OBS-MX kits.

I already sent the vectors to PAS about 2 years ago for those ones. I just never had actual buttons to test, lol!

I ended up nabbing Red, Blue, Black, and Clear O-rings cheap from E-bay. I think my favorite for feel and silencing and the clear ones, which I think are harder feeling than the black ones. I bought 120 pc of each color all for 8$ and it was my first E-bay purchase so free shipping so I’m well set.

The foam here has a similar action to the o-rings, but it’s slightly less abrupt of a feeling upon bottom out. It’s not mushy (though it could be if you mash the button down after making contact).

There’s approximately the same distance from bottom of plunger to rim base with these installed as with @sethian0’s spec o-rings.

O-rings do the job, but (to me) they don’t replicate the ‘soft landing’ feeling I experience with HBFS-30’s. This does the trick.

See I hate the soft feel I want the buttons to clack and snap just minus the noise hahha

We are all different (which is good). Wife had me put little kahunas on all the buttons on her stick. I love the squish of a good foam pad too

yeah, different is good =)

nice find!

One of the points of the kahuna pads was to not have the mush feeling. The little ones do that well, but the big ones still feel a little mushy, sadly.

I’ve got another pack of little kahunas en route, @Moonchilde. Fear not. I’ll test and reply here upon arrival

Big Kahunas en-route. Hopefully my wife will stop complaining now lol
