Of all the characters, you’re gonna nerf Phoenix Wright.
And not like “Oh we lowered an attack power” or something, a nerf that literally makes massive changes to his strategies and playstyle.
He was a character that I had to build an entire team around. Now that’s all blown up. Awesome. At least he got his secret buff of saying “Take that!” instead of take this. Can’t lie, I was super excited when I heard that.
A smart playing seeing PW running to them not doing anything should see that a grab is coming and superjump over him, but I could see a grab working if you could lock them down with a good assist.
So then you counter pick with one of those ~18 characters, what’s the big deal? Counter-picking is a viable tactic and used in other games so why couldn’t they just keep him the same and have people counter-pick against him and his assist? If everyone was able to get around him there would be no point to him having that weird hurtbox. But no, Capcom had to go overboard and cater to people who didn’t feel like learning how to get around him.
To Wright users who are thinking of quitting, for shame. I know, I know, you want to say you tried to make him work but he isn’t good. It’s too early to be talking like that, you need to get back into the lab and make him viable. It’s like in MK9, everyone thought Jax was bottom five for the longest time, then CD Jr came and showed the MK community that he’s one of the best, and even went as far as to show that he was always good even before the patches, it was just no one spent enough time with him to see how good he really was. The same could happen with Wright, you just need to try harder.
Anyway, mini rant over, hopefully the Wright boards don’t get abandoned.
^^Finger hits tri-dashes and standing H puts the opponent back on the ground to stop super jumps, doesn’t it (check the angle)? Wave-dashing != blocking, btw. And super jumps are susceptible to air grabs, or a standing H if opponent comes down mashing. Better question is, what do you do vs characters that can fly and do infinite air dashes (tip: lvl 3).
And you don’t run at the opponent “doing nothing”, you move forward while throwing evidence/calling assists until you’re close. How do you intend to hit the Objection anyway? You start TA at close range if you set-up correctly. You still have Slip-Up, too. >_>
If you throw evidence and throw out fingers while running at the opponent they can use pushblock to keep you away. I realized the PW user could use an assist which is why I said that in my previous post.
^But you can only push block for so long while holding back until you’re in the corner (corner push-block does next to nothing to Wright pressure; it’s about half the total distance of a mid-screen push block). What do you do once you’re cornered? Try to super jump over Wright and put yourself in the air grab/H mix-up? Stick out a poke to hold him back and hope he doesn’t hit you with a finger? TA mode lasts long enough to get an opponent to the corner on blocking alone. If you can get an opponent to hold back while you just hold forward, that’s even faster. You can’t just block/super-jump away to solve the problem.
And like I said, where are you hitting the Objection anyway? Are you doing random mid-screen Objections hoping to hit? Or are you combo-ing into it? Regardless, the threat of finger alone should give you the advantage to walk up and scare the opponent into just worrying about getting hit from across the screen.
What can Haggar do about it? What can X-23 do about a person who stays in the air? A lot of people in this game have bad 1v1 match-ups. It’s your problem/mistake if you put PW as an anchor.
Even if you do, the problem is the strategy of just getting behind the assist assumes that the opponent isnt doing anything but calling the assist. Like in BANKS’ video, what’s to stop the Strider player from jumping and pressing :f:+:h: to OS air throw while also covering PW from random hypers? If I use Vergil’s Trick M (teleports behind opponent) and call PW right before I do it, how are you gonna get behind PW? Hell, if I call PW while wavedashing towards you, what are you gonna do? Any teleport/cross-up that puts you behind me leads to you being inbetween me and PW. And in the first example, even if you teleport behind me after Vergil’s teleport, you gave me time to recover and either punish your teleport or just block and let PW handle you if he’s close enough.
Let me put it this way, if the opponent is playing smart, having PW’s hurtbox behind him means that you cant actually hurt him.
X-23 has great air mobility and can easily can catch Magneto trying to escape. Haggar has the pipe, a large hitting normal that can catch people air dashing. All Wright has is the finger and that points downward in the air. Plus even if Wright tried to catch Magneto air dashing, Magneto could use his air projectiles to prevent the possibly of Wright hitting with the finger.
Wright has the grounded finger, which points upwards. Also, Magneto can’t stay in the air forever and if he tries to use projectiles at all, Wright has an instant lvl 3 that hits everywhere. Instant lvl 3 punish.
Haggar pipe isn’t helping in the general “chase character across the screen” game (I would think Wright H is better, tbh).
Magneto can just super jump to avoid the grounded finger or use repulsion to make Wright farther away. Also even if the lvl 3 hits, it doesn’t kill Magneto. It just leaves Wright in Investigation mode, open to mix ups.
That depends on what the player is doing. If you super jump and only try to wavedash in the air at smart times, there’s little he can do.
How about an easy and more comparable person, Ghost Rider? My point is, lots of characters have bad 1v1 matchups. This is why, who you put as an anchor is a very critical part of team making.
You mean it leaves Magneto on the ground open to mix-ups (as limited as low hit or grab may seem, it’s still a mix-up; throw in Slip-Up just because). Repulsion is lvl 3 punishable, stand H is at an angle to stop super jumps before they get anywhere, and even if Magz super jumps far away from Wright, he’s going to land eventually. If he air dashes or does anything to cover his landing and you have the meter, lvl 3. If he just falls, he has to deal with stand H/ air grab mix-up coming down. If he super jumps himself into the corner, lol. Not easy, but doable.
^Why must you put Haggar down? ;_;
Totally agree with having a better anchor than Wright (or Haggar), regardless of my points. Just saying it’s not hopeless.
With that nerf, all the frauds who played Pheonix Wright only for his godlike assists will get exposed. As soon as they will see how they suck with him, they will just GTFO and dickride Wesker. The fact is, from now on only the real players will play PW because he is PW. No more FRAUDS !! The rest can GTFO !!
To the rest of the board…my condolences on the nerfs, guys. :’( Playing against Wright teams on XBL was fun and I am going to be sad now that Hsien-Ko tier is renamed to Wright and Hsien-Ko tier, and he will never be played ever again.
I posted this on the other thread but this one seems more lively so i’ll post here too:
After a few hours of sulking, I have eased my mind in regards to Phoenix Wright nerf.
I will still use him as a character. I just won’t find a need to gather evidence as much.
We Phoenix Wright players just have to change our way of using him.
We have to use him AS AN ACTUAL CHARACTER. Fight with him and just find the proper time to investigate.
If we get lucky and get all 3 evidence, we shouldn’t try to go to Objection Mode as quickly as possible anymore.
The benefit of that mode has clearly changed.
Phoenix Wright players, don’t give up. Just change your way of playing him.
Here are the current positives:
[LIST]
[]Maya comes out quicker.
[]LVL3 X-Factor on Turn-About is still powerful.
[]Careful when calling him out as an assist during Turn-About now. I am guilty (no pun intended) of this as well.
[]Call out Phoenix Wright assist only when your hitting or they are guarding your attacks. It will at least contain them for you to setup.
[*]He still has powerful combos.

I hope that people don’t stop playing him but it’s certainly understandable if they do switch.
Such a big change and it is so hard to get him to that mode already.
Still, don’t be a quitter, just investigate.

I got into Marvel because Phoenix Wright is in the game. Granted, this nerf is completely uncalled for, but I did not pay $95 (360 and PS3 version of the game and strategy guide) to not play this character. I’m still in this.
