I’ll be honest, one of my best Wright teams so far is Wright/Nova/Frank, and you know why? Because I have absolutely no interest in keeping Frank alive. If someone punishes Frank’s assist, my first thought isn’t “Oh no I’ve lost the character”, it’s “Sweet, that’s one or two pieces of evidence that I can gather right here and now”. It sounds ridiculous, but I’m confident enough in my PW that I don’t really care if my other two live or die; Phoenix Wright in Turnabout Mode is good enough to sweep teams by himself. For the most part, any damage that the others do is just bonus damage, really, to make Wright’s work a bit easier. As ridiculous as it sounds, I use Frank in that team for his assist only.
Wow I’m posting way too much tonight. But I need to respond to this too: I’m pretty positive that it’s a glitch. I was running a Wright mirror the other night and we played several matches. First match, we both got Folder/Knife/Watch (I remember that because I found it interesting that we both got the same evidence set), and then for the next 5-4 matches, that’s all we got. It’s either an insanely odd coincidence, or it’s some kind of strange glitch involving how his evidence comes up. At the time, I actually thought it was a preset mechanic in Wright mirrors to prevent one Wright from getting screwed by randomness, but I think it’s some sort of glitch that keeps giving him the same evidence in repeated sets for some odd reason. I’d love someone to test this, though, to verify.
Yeah. We went back the the CSS and tried it again and I’d always get the same preset combination of evidence after the first match of the new set of rematches.
After all this training with my Wright team, I am seriously destroying online with Wright now. It feels amazing. Sure I know part of it has to do with the fact that a lot of the people online are just going “WHAT THE FUCK” when I’m in turnabout mode, but that just makes it so much sweeter. I was worried because of his wild card factor I would never feel completely stable with him, but I feel more stable and confident with my Wright team than I have ever felt about a team in MvC3.
I had a great ranked win streak going on until I got put up against Combofiend. Let’s just say he’s been working on his Nemesis a little more, lol.
EDIT: I also think Frank makes a great teammate for Wright, but I think Frank on anchor is a bad idea. I use Frank in my second slot, and use Wright’s assist in turnabout mode to help power him up. It works great.
I’m doing really well online, too. My record is currently… 57-17, I think? It’s even better considering that the team I’ve been using so far (PW/Hulk/Ammy) is not gonna be the team I’ll stick with ultimately. I’m thinking of running a PW/Iron Fist/Frank team, using Iron Fist’s OTG assist and Frank’s shopping cart assist. I think they’d work really well together. At this point, though, I’m not good enough with Iron Fist or Frank, so I’m going along with two of my mains back in the original MvC3 on my current team in the meantime.
I can confidently say that Phoenix Wright does not suck, even based off his assist alone. However, he does have some pretty bad match-ups in which it’s not really recommended for him to start off against (Ghost Rider… can someone help me with him?).
PW’s bad match-ups (in terms of being on point and being covered) I think are going to fall into the realm of the quickly moving characters as opposed to the teleporters. Using his super + maya shield + assists I can reasonably predict most of the common teleporters, and respond with whatever to give me time (in a lot of cases anyways).
However, trying to keep Zero/Spiderman/Spencer off you if they know what they’re doing with they’re up/down left/right mixups is a different story entirely. Even with proper assisting and super usage it can be hard to hit them and give yourself any sort of meaningful space.
PW’s good matchups are probably going to come from characters that rely more on other people making mistakes (ie: Hulk). It’s really easy to just block hulk, and use Maya + other tools to get evidence relatively pain free - since Wright has no incentive to run like an idiot into HULK SMASH STANDING S.
EDIT: Whoops, I didn’t read the posts above me. I guess we all ran into the same thing at around the same time. Nice!
I just played a 20 game set with another Phoenix Wright player. I think this may be worth noting:
When we gathered evidence, we both got identical evidence in the same order. For instance, there was one game where I started by calling an assist and knocked him down while I gathered evidence, and I got a plunger, glasses, and a folder. Then I dumped the two and got a cell phone and knife. As the other PW got up, he got a plunger, glasses, and a folder as well. While this doesn’t necessarily prove anything, it may be a hint that PW’s evidence is NOT dependent on the time, as we both gathered the same evidence at different times. What it might prove is that the evidence has an order that’s predefined at the beginning of the match, and not random at each interval. Perhaps there’s a different evidence “track” that we get at the start of the match that we go down, and that track changes each match. If there’s only two or three different tracks, we may able to memorize them and cut out the random?
This is all conjecture though, hope I’m not imagining it.
I’m drunk and Wright is awesome
I’ve been running PW/Doom/Wesker and it’s been pretty successful for me. Pretty much do what you can with PW with Doom Missiles/Molecular Shield assist covering him. Get to turnabout and get Wesker/Doom in to take advantage of “Press the Witness” and save PW for a LVL3 XFACTOR.
I’m a huge fan of PW being in the game but he’s pretty much another high risk/reward character. The sole fact that you have to go through modes for him to be effective later makes troublesome matchups for him. Anyone with a teleport or decent rushdown can cause trouble for him. I think for the most part, the big thing about constructing the “right” PW team is to consider how good your other two characters are TOGETHER in order to have a fallback plan. Pretty much how a lot of Phoenix teams were constructed with MVC3 (Wolverine/Sentinel, Wesker/Haggar, Mag/Dorm, etc). Banking on your best character being PW won’t help when you got tons of players playing the top tier characters who have no meta-game to start out with.
Phoenix Wright is by far the most fun/interesting character in UMVC3 though.
Playing more, I’d like to emphasize one key thing:
PW greatly enhances the snowball effect of winning a point v point battle.
Beating the other person’s point character and finishing them off with a DHC that ends in Maya is huge. In my experience it gives you 3 good evidence + trial around 75% of the time if not more (takes really bad luck not to get this). This means that the other person is now stuck with having to kill 3 characters including a Wright who’s extremely likely to go into turnabout mode.
This is actually a really big deal because if you outplayed someone in the beginning, it makes the potential of a bullshit XF3 comeback much less. If this were around in vanilla, you would have seen people picking PW as an insurance against DP teams, and deciding to kill characters/go for turnabout rather than worrying about Dark Phoenix. Because the turnabout PW assist could have acted as a strong barrier against mindless XF3 rushdown bullshit.
Basically, Wright is potentially the strongest counter in the game to players who rely too heavily on getting wins with XF3 related tactics. He could end up being the worst enemy of Firebrand who looks like he could be the biggest XF3 abuser in the game right now with his level 3. Should be interesting to see how it pans out.
Hey guys, just wanted to stop by and drop some PW tech I’ve been using for you all. I’ve been messing around with different team synergies and such and the most viable one I’ve been able to come up with was this: Trish (Peekaboo)/Phoenix Wright (Press the witness)/Dr Doom (Hidden Missiles)
Ok so first thing first, you’ll need to figure out what position you’ll want Phoenix Wright in because that’ll really affect your ability to do well with him. From my experience, you can’t really start off with him on point because people are easily intimidated by him after most likely experience the threat that is turnabout mode so they’ll likely rush your ass down to the ground with their Weskers, Dantes, and Vergils. I know because I do the same.
So you’ll need an on point character that offers three things: viability, speed, and ability to allow a safe switch in. For my team, Trish covers all those grounds. She’s a rush down character when you need her to be and a just as effective keepaway character. Her tridash will easily open people up and she best of all, she’s been buffed from vanilla. Last, she can safely get Phoenix Wright in by throwing out a correctly timed/spaced Round Harvest super and he’ll be able to collect evidence (more on that later). Trish doesn’t need to be your choice of a point character, all you need is someone who fits the bill. Dormammu does a good job as well.
Dr. Doom is a great anchor character. He can safely rush down, keepaway, and do massive amounts of damage with simple combos. Although anyone can be your anchor character, Dr. Doom has arguably the best lockdown assist in the game.
So lets discuss assists. I have Trish with her peekaboo assist because the trap she lays out is very useful to Phoenix Wright. With Maya assist out, the horizontal space in front of PW is completely safe but many people will simply jump over Maya so that’s where peekaboo comes in and further protects him. Also, if you’ve got all evidence files and are in courtroom mode, a person who falls into the peekaboo trap can easily be hit by Objection if done in time.
Now onto Dr. Doom’s assist. Hidden Missiles serves so many purposes. First of all, it makes Trish’s rushdown pressure absolutely flawless. Call Doom when you’re crossing up and such and he’ll be safe and your mixups will too. His assist even serves as a combo breaker!
Phoenix Wright’s assist, press the witness, is fantastic in turnabout mode. Sure you could use anyone of his assists, Get em’ missile works for high low pressure/unblockables, his paper assist serves for lockdown, but press the witness is possibly the best get off me assist in the game next to Haggar’s lariat and it doesn’t cause him damage at all.
Last, by now you all probably want to know the most important thing, how the hell do I safely get evidence with Phoenix Wright? Well, my strategy might not be as fancy as UltraDavid’s team super and get 3-5 free evidence in one go but mine works just as well. Since I start off with Trish, the way I go about it is that I don’t immediately go into a safe switch into PW because that’s pointless in my opinion. You want to first threaten your opponent with the current character you’re playing because YOUR TEAM IS NOT A GIMMICK! Condition your opponent into blocking a lot with your safe tridash mixup protected by hidden missiles. Hell, kill off as many of your opponent’s characters as you can. Then when you feel confident, get as far as you can away from your opponent to maximize screen distance and do a Round Harvest super. The super only ends after a certain amount of hits so by maximizing distance you maximize travel time thereby allowing more time to gather evidence. You can typically get 2-3 evidence during this. When you notice that Round Harvest has hit the opponent’s guard, call Doom for even more free time to gather evidence. This is the time you’ll spend fixing your bad evidence or finishing your gathering. Last, when all of Doom’s missiles have been shot off, call Maya for further protection to be able to switch stances and whatnot.
I’m sure you all know different methods of getting into turnabout mode already so I’ll just tell you that my favorite method is off a TAC because both my point and anchor characters are very effective rushdown characters who can easily get in.
I’d make videos of my matches but I’m too poor to buy component cables for my xbox to connect it to my HDPVR lol ironic isn’t it?
Some notes after a few days of playing Phoenix Wright:
I’ve been using Wright/Hsien-ko/Sentinel since day 1, but I lose a lot more often than I win, I have around a 1 in 3 win/loss ratio. The problem is more often than not, Wright simply feels like a dead weight, he just goes in, get’s immediately rushed down without having 1/4th of a second to collect evidence or even throw out a Maya shield, and dies while accomplishing nothing. Even when I win, usually level 3 Sentinel just does all the work.
But earlier today, like some other people, I tried Trish/Wright and played around with Sentinel and Strange. Trish would simply Round Harvest and DHC or raw tag into Wright, and he get’s plenty of time to collect evidence. When the opponent’s about to recover from the Round Harvest, throw out a Maya shield and an assist while there on the other side of the screen and you get even more time. Plus, Trish builds some meter for Wright to use in Turnabout Mode. It’s really looking like it’ll be much smarter to put someone on point, especially Trish or Dormammu, and DHC or raw tag into Wright. I can also see Chris working somewhat well, since the second hit of his Grenade Launcher hyper shoots up, kind of acting like a Hidden Missle.
Also, Strange’s Daggers of Denak assist seems good for Wright, since it lasts a long time and floats in the air for a while, which can stop opponents from jumping over Maya like Trish’s Peekaboo.
i still think wright works better at point than as a middle man
due to the fact his assists aren’t that good outside of turnabout mode and sooner or later you’ll have to tag him in anyways
trying to use hypers to buy him some time is an interesting idea but i feel better getting my evidence sooner rather than later cause even without him being in turnabout mode if you tag him out and he’s got all three pieces of good evidence then at least you don’t need to come up with some elaborate plan to pick up one piece of evidence
face it Phoenix Wright needs that evidence and while you may think it’s a dumb idea to place him at point
if you have the right assists and use maya you should get all the evidence you need without wasting too much time
he’s not Jean Grey he doesn’t need 5 bars and his health isn’t as low as hers
he’s a character that’s a gamble…a lottery character if you will
he’s not someone that you can time when he’ll go into beast mode he’s someone that you try to predict when he’ll go into beast mode
you may have a lot of bad evidence in a row or you may get perfect evidence three times in a row right from the get go
you never know…not saying people shouldn’t use him as a middle man…just saying that he can work as point man too…due to how random investigation mode is…someone starting him at middle might have a hard time getting good evidence someone using him at point might get good evidence three times in a row or vice versa
just as long as you remember to protect him and use maya as often as you can then you shouldn’t run into any trouble no matter where you place him
I can see what you’re trying to say, but the problem is that all the opponent has to do is start with one of the Trenchcoat Bros (or Strider), and gathering evidence becomes next to impossible. They are on me at all times, I don’t get 1/4th of a second of breathing room to even contemplate throwing out a Maya shield. Tagging him in from something like a Round Harvest is the only way I usually manage to gather evidence, unless I simply get lucky with him on point.
you don’t want to be stuck with phoenix wright without any evidence as you’re last character which is why i tend to gather some evidence and get most of that out of the way first
I’ve been doing some playing and it seems to me that the grab is the best thing to do when the opponent rushes down that use teleports. People never see me getting close to them and never think I’ll grab them.
I fought a dude that had a 14 game win streak with a Dark Phoenix team.
I put that bitch on the witness stand and hit her with some Ace Attorney when she fired a TK shot. I’m not sure I’ve ever had a more satisfying moment the entire time I’ve played MvC3. Your time to pay for your crimes was long overdue Jean.
God I’m so happy Phoenix Wright is in this game.
Agreed he just brings a unique flavor to this game and i can’t really see UMVC3 being the same without him
Just curious, PW’s Turnabout Break the Witness assist, is it really 100% invincible?
I ask this because in one of my online matches I had gotten PW into turnabout, swapped him out for my partner, and started spamming the invincible assist. My opponent was Ryu and one of the times Break the Witness assist went the wrong way since Ryu was trying to cross me up, so now PW’s heading the wrong direction and Ryu uses his Shinku Hadouken and I gaurd it, but then I notice on my life bar that PW’s health was 3/4ths red. How in the hell did he get hit?
Well at this point I think that it is like the old lariat assist, it has vulnerability at the end.
