The problem with shuma’s assist is how easily he can be happy birthdayed. The beam also caused very little blockstun, so you’re not going to have a lot of time to do stuff while he’s out there. He’s out there for almost as long as sentinel, but there are no drones to protect him. Shuma is not really overlooked at all. He has glaring issues that everyone seems to not notice, so they call him underrated. Sadly, capcom actually thinks he’s a good character, so the changes he are getting are EXTREMELY minimal. Expect very few if not any characters to be weaker than shuma in umvc3.
I think the lasers are meant for characters who can hit you regardless of the Maya barrier (examples stated above); Phoenix Wright does have long animation frames therefore Shuma can also assist at that and Maya’s barrier seems to be ok against Drones.
I really need to get in the lab with PW just to see what assists he actually needs. Like if he can find evidence fast enough, I feel as though having two assists to zone would be a waste (not directed at anyone in here, just based on my playstyle) when one of this could be an OTG assist so he can combo into Maya hyper off a hard knockdown. Thank goodness Batman AC comes out in a few days or I’d spend from now until Nov 15 doing theory fighter.
Damn, that’s really intense. That already sounds like it would be a really strong team. I hadn’t really considered Strider too much because I’m not as solid at rushdown as I am with zoning, but I’m going to seriously look into him now when I get the game because of this.
I think I’m going to try Wright/Strider/Doom. Even though I really think Shuma’s assist would be great, I still think that Doom’s missiles would work good too. And paired with Strider I could use his assist when needed, plus I think lvl 2 XF would work good with Strider. Doom’s missiles would leave him more vulnerable than Shuma’s assist though, it could lead to come birthdays for Strider wall clings and teleports. I’ll have to figure some shit out. I just don’t know about Shuma as a character for me, and I like to be good with all of my characters on point.
The problem with Wright/Phoenix/Strider is that you’re stuck with three characters who are screaming to use their LV3 supers for some kind of turnaround, and who all need to burn meter to be effective. Phoenix looks like he’s going to need Maya Spazzy to keep people off him often, Strider needs his hypers for any kind of real damage and Shuma, while probably the least meter-intensive of all, needs to DHC after his hypers in case they ever whiff. That being said, I like some of the synergy in this team and furthermore, all of the characters here have some kind of ‘comeback’ potential for burning meter (Wright turnabout stance/lv3, Shuma Chaos Dimension, Strider Uroboros). But who are you going to use for battery?
Any of these characters on point has some way to benefit from Missile assist. Shuma can use his tiger knee’d mystic smash as an overhead and strider has his teleport kick which is a tracking overhead. Wright on point can also use teleport kick with Missile to do some nice projectile oriented crossups. If you have Wright on point and you really want to kill someone, Maya Spazzy into Chaos Dimension in the corner on block will most likely ensure that someone dies.
Vajra groundbounces I believe, so it will be useful for comboing into Objection if Phoenix is not capable of doing that on his own.
As far as DHC’s go, Maya Spazzy is a nice cover for any of Shuma’s blocked/whiffed hypers and so is Legion. A mystic stare > Hyper mystic Smash > Legion DHC might even allow Strider to easily combo after Legion.
The “we all need level 3’s”… Wright can work fine with out using his level 3, same with Shuma… I find shuma’s level 1’s to be more reliable than his level 3 because it’s easier. You may as well say Magneto and Doom can’t work with Wright because they’ll use their level 3’s to give an assuring finisher after their loops. Obviously, Strider has the deadlier level 3 and since Wright and Shuma can do well with their level 1’s and regular BnB’s there shouldn’t be any meter problems.
edit: Here are some ideal ways to put Shuma’s CD in use, you can DHC off Wright’s Maya super or Legion. Since the Legion trick works with Dante’s devil trigger, it should work with Shuma when he goes into CD.
If Mags/Akuma/Phoenix and Wolvie/Akuma/Phoenix could work with the meter problems, this team should have it ten times easier.
Shuma’s lv 1’s don’t really offer the same utility as his lv3 though. You want to use his lv3 to get guaranteed damage off unblockable setups or characters coming IN after a kill, not just for doing damage. There are plenty of situations where that’s useful and it’s more consistant than Ouroboros (though Ouroboros pretty much is impossible to block) Sadly, at the moment Chaos Dimension is one of the only reasons to pick Shuma.
You can’t really compare that to the way Doom/Wesker use lv3’s simply to finish off opponents. Being able to kill off a character and then handicap the one coming in 100% is a big deal as they have no way to ‘not get hit’.
I find it pretty funny that PW is one of the few characters that we WANT to use his level 3 ASAP considering how easily it can be a ToD combo with it’s damage.
Is turnabout timered? It might be worth keeping fancier mode sometimes as compared to just blowing it all. (Depending on who you’re killing of course)
I see what you mean but you’ll need to change the strategy a bit, and remember Shuma’s level 1 is mashable now so it’s not a bad idea to use a level 1 if you have the opportunity. If you do think it’s needed and not a big hurt to use his level 3, then why not, use the CD. Shuma can drain meter anyway. If Strider/Vergil is having positive feedback in working then Shuma/Strider should be better, meter wise.
Yeah if I remember there is a bar that appears above your evidence bar (woot more bars) that slowly drains over time, SLOWLY drains. Being how almost all of PW’s normals do massive damage and or crazy properties during Turnabout I think an easy 400k meterless combo should be easy and followed by his level 3 would 100% most of the cast,
Yes it is but it’s a long ass timer. I say it’d be best to kill off one character while in turnabout mode and lvl3 the next one so that the opponent is put at a huge disadvantage. The only problem is opening up the character that comes in.

He drains meter with grabs… if your opponent is competent, you shouldn’t be stealing enough meter to compensate for random level 1’s. His level ones are almost amongst the most unsafe in the entire game. A lot of what you are thinking is all theory crafting which is cool, but the theory shit should revolve around the new characters. Shuma has 0 representation in the tournament scene and pretty much every other scene with this game, and he has been out for 6 months. What shuma can do now is reality and none of his changes are going to make him play any different. He will still do shit for mid screen damage, have horribly unsafe level 1’s, a watered down x-23 level 3, and awful mobility and priority. His assist is overrated and always gets people killed whenever they call it. Everyone here keeps talking about shuma on a theory level, but the thing is that he is reality. If you want to put all his “underrated” tools to use, then play him, but his shitty bottom tier status is not going anywhere in ultimate, and the people on neogaf must be crazy to think he is the best possible teammate for phoenix wright.
That being said: The assist will still be good for wright, but if you think about dormammu, people could be doing the same thing with his assist while charging spells, but you still don’t see that really if at all.
I think a lot of Wright’s game is going to depend on the specific properties on Maya. For instance, in super form, can Maya be stopped at all? What happens if you pushblock her? If she’s a solid blockstring and can’t be destroyed, it gives Wright a great chance to gather evidence and possibly go for a mixup. We’ll see.
Is it true that Maya’s barrier can stop hypers? I keep on hearing rumors that it can. I’d really like some confirmation on this.
Someone at GFAQs who was supposedly at NYCC, said that Maya stopped Million Dollars, and upon being hit by Ice Storm, was frozen, but the shield remained.
Yeah, those are the rumors I’m referring to.
If it’s true, then Maya will be able to prevent Phoenix from getting randomed out by supers. o_o
From what I’ve seen from Wright, he definitely has the potential to be good, but he won’t be anything close to the next Dark Phoenix (can’t really see him being top tier either). When it comes to competitive play, I think what will ultimately get to him is bad luck with evidence draws, lack of mobility, and lack of ability to open people up quickly and reliably (like previously stated in this thread, I imagine his turnabout mode won’t be particularly hard to time out).
My prediction for him is around mid-tier or so, but he does have potential and I’m gonna have a blast using him regardless.
I think PW’s only true problem is that he’s one of the few characters that has to have a team built around him. Basically you should have him on point at almost all times but you never know nowadays since so many people are even repping an all Darkstalkers team and winning in tournaments (not the full tournament but not losing the first couple of matches is a start). I got scared when I heard that his evidence seacrhing is random but when you look at the fact that he can get three items in one count and (Im almost certain) there are different good combinations, it’s not that bad. It really comes down to seeing what his best combo starters are as well as seeing how fast they are, etc.
These are good points, but being a relatively slow character without particularly strong looking mix-ups doesn’t bode well in competitive MvC3.
Some bad luck definitely won’t mean insta-death with how simple searching can sometimes be, but it certainly could make or break him at times in the very quick-paced world of MvC3. With how suddenly characters can get killed off in this game, it might already be too late for him by the time he gets to re-search a few times.
I still see a good amount of potential in Wright, but his flaws are definitely not minor.
