OBJECTION! - The Phoenix Wright Thread

No shame in losing to Combofiend.

I’ve been watching the PW vids lately and have noticed the relative lack of Turnabout Mode compared to how I play. Personally, I can’t really play an effective game with Trial Wright except “Get to Turnabout Mode” or “Throw Maya Hypers.”

Bar the obvious “He’s not in Turnabout Mode,” how badly does not getting Turnabout Mode Wright mess with your game plan?

Turnabout is like the bulk of Wright’s offense since people flee from the finger and cellphone chip and make match ups more bearable for Wright, so it’s does hinder your gameplan since if you can’t get any offense in then the opponent would have a hp lead when he dies.

Trial mode offense to me is making the opponent do mistakes with zoning from your evidence, that way it can help to open up on the opponent for combos. An important thing is learn the matchups and decide if you want to do trial mode offense and when. For example Skrull and Dormammu are tough matchups for trial mode Wright since Skrull can bypass zoning with meteor smashes, and Dormammu can constantly pressure you with purification causing you to take damage and having to switch modes to put up Maya shield.

If you do decide to rely on trial mode offense I would say get at least two good evidences or try to pick up a full set regardless of bad evidence and remove them with the judge hyper when given the opportunity. Even though there’s already the guide on the forum and youtube I just want to explain more about the tools.

‘Normals and Specials’

Spoiler

:l: and :h: both are decent anti air options :l: is more like if you just want to stop the opponent in the air from an airdash or teleport you have to be fast to continue the combo. :h: is if you want to take a risk and combo.
:d::l: Dodges some projectiles and attacks which helps a lot immensely.
:d::m: it starts up fast but priority isn’t the greatest helps if frame trapping.
:d::h: it’s hitbox and active frames are deceiving which makes it a pretty decent anti air and a good frame trap.
Paperworks high :qcf::atk:stops projectiles more efficiently, front teleports, and people zoning you from the top right direction
Paperworks low :qcb::atk:is for covering your head which helps against divekicks or people who rely on top teleports.
Press the Witness :dp::atk: is good for putting the opponent in block stun, it seems to have a really minor destroy projectiles attribute since it destroys stuff like Strider’s animals so you can do something like paperworks into press to destroy some projectiles that papers can’t. Also good for intercepting air dashes, front teleports, the opponent’s tech roll, or doing a mixup game.
Judge hyper :qcb::atk::atk: is good if the opponent makes a mistake (such as you’re going to punish a hyper or mistake) and if you want to get back at collecting evidence.

‘Evidences’

[details=Spoiler]
Knife: Works well against big characters Sentinel, Nemesis, but against regular sized characters they’ll eventually get in.
Watch: Pretty fast projectile with decent durability good for if you want something to come out fast, can also be used as a frame trap.
Vase: Covers an arc in the air good against some characters like Trish, also good for a frame trap, also with a horizontal assist it can make a good zoning setup.
Autopsy: Very good at absorbing projectiles if one shoots out in front of you, makes a decent air barrier too bad it fires randomly.
Photo: Goes through most projectiles, very good at covering the horizontal space.
Cellphone: The core of trial mode zoning, orbs can absorb projectiles works well if you have something to cover the horizontal area, you’ll want to use this most of the time though just be careful.[/details]

A huge read but hopefully it helps, refer to the guide for more info.

I can now Maya Plink with a 45% success rate!

It’s been said that chess is best learned backwards. First you learn the endgame, where everything is simple, and you achieve a foundation for your skills. The midgame is, for the most part, played like a more complex endgame. The opening can often be played without specifically learning it; the principles from both the mid- and endgame carry over, and you can play a decent opening without ever learning specific ones.

Wright, too, has three “phases”: Investigation, Trial, and Turnabout. What is the best order to practice and learn Wright?

I learned Turnabout mode first. My Investigation game is sub-par, and forget my Trial. That said, I think Turnabout mode is best learned last. It’s a lot easier to play with a giant finger than without it. Trial should come first, since I think that Wright learns his fundamentals in that mode, and of course you go into Turnabout from Trial. Investigation should come second, if you ask me.

I’d say investigation and trial mode go hand in hand, turnabout mode is kinda like a bonus. Also, I honestly think the most important thing with wright is not messing up the stance change. You should have it down rote, lest you find yourself accidentally sneezing feebly before getting ToD’d.

I believe I’ve found a way to “reliably” (I say “reliably” because I haven’t perfected it yet) Maya plink. First, you must be able to plink fast enough that you can gather evidence with two separate presses. After that:

:d:,:df:,:f:+:atk:,:uf:+:s:

Usually works. I don’t think the TK is necessary, but I’ve found it helps me.

Anybody want to do play on xboxlive, I want to have some phoenix Wright mirrors and matches ha even trolling lobbies. Add me, my tag is andilex

I heard a PW won a Runback tourney from Viscant. Any vids?

Not that I know of, although they might go up in the vids section if they eventually do. You know the name of the player?

Here’s the video, it was edited into the source article:

I’ve seen that video before… Was it from said Runback?

Was watching the Big Two pre-stream. Saw a Phoenix Wright Player. Felt vindicated, Now, if only Wright had done somethin’ meaningful in most of those matches…

Out of curiosity what team are you running Skip?

Phoenix Wright (Press the Witness)/Frank West (Shopping Cart)/Akuma (Tatsu)

Why you ask?

lol no real reason, i’m just hella nosy is all

Going to local club where we play Marvel. Gonna see how good the local competition is (well, the under 18 competition is).

The fact that people label this as god like…bugs me to no end.

I mean, good on for the guy for beating infrit. But his pw didn’t really do anything special.

None of his characters were. I mean, no offense to Wolfstreet, he did what he had to do with what he had, and he did get out of EVO pools in Winners but if his pools were anything like that match with Infrit, his opponents for the most part just beat themselves. Everyone’s still free to Log Trap, everyone’s still free to Maya Shield.

Makes me laugh that people were bitching about no one talking about Wolfstreet winning. He’s got great composure though, which is pretty damn helpful in this game. He didn’t spaz or go crazy when dropping any combos, he kept going in when necessary. Other than some questionable tag ins, I saw nothing inheritantly “wrong” with his play either.

I think it was less that his PW is godlike so as much as it is the fact that people think in order to use PW at high level effectively you must be godlike. I remember seeing a few “Phoenix Wright is Banned” jokes on a stream chat. People are surprised that PW can be used well against high-tier play. Add to the fact that next-to-no one IF NOT no one that high has match-up experience with Wright (why would they need it?), and what they think is godlike is just normal play. Happens with me to my buddies. I’ve told them that Wright is ass, but they stink so much that they’re almost free to him.
