OBJECTION! - The Phoenix Wright Thread

I’ve seen a lot more Wright teams lately on the streams. I’ve always used PW (still noobishly but learning) and I noticing some changes in my gameplay just watching and reading these posts. Thanks for posting all this on him. I just need to find and 3rd for my team…so many choices. One thing I’ve seen is Slip-Up through the Maya shield to catch them off guard and give more time to collect/mode change/tag out. With the right assists this can lead into the objection.

Try out Sentinel or Doom as a 3rd character.

They’re good anchors and they have very helpful assists for Wright (Doom : Missiles, Sent : Drones)

did something happen while i was away?? quite a resurgence of old faces lol

but heyyyy welcome back russ! as for anything new, well i dunno how new this is for you but something i’m still working with is Ughlywhen’s amazing post regaring plinking with Maya OTG in combos to rack up evidence. details here

Good to see you’re still around banks! And damn that tech is amazing and has tons of possibilities, I’ve gotta start digging into that right away.

I’m still looking for a point character for my team. Tonight I tried Haggar/Wright/Doom. While I think this team has potential (Haggar and Doom assist for a evidenced stocked or non evidenced stocked Wright is really nice), so far it’s just been hard for me to have success with Haggar on point. Then again, I haven’t used him since early in vanilla, so maybe I just need more time.

I’m going to experiment a little more. I’m thinking Nemesis might work well because of his high damage output and launcher slam GTFO assist, but the assist doesn’t seem as great as I thought.

Haggar is a fantastic point character, Russell.

I’m thinking of replacing Hulk with Haggar on my PW/Hulk/Doom team, and will switch between PW and Haggar depending on the match-up.

I can for sure tell he’s a better point character than he was in Vanilla. I think I’ll stick it out with him for a while, figure out some things, and see how it goes. Missiles help him approach, but I wish Wright’s assist could benefit him more. I was hoping I could set up unblockables with the pipe and dog, but it seems to be more trouble than it’s worth.

And the fact that I still kind of want an easy OTG for Wright is itching me. It would be nice to nab an Objection easily off of any basic series combo or overhead with a good OTG. I can do it with missiles, but it has to be set up correctly. But I think having lariat assist and just figuring out the OTG timing with missiles would be the best way to go.

I used to run a Nem/Wright team, but when I made the switch to Haggar I honestly started winning a ton more. Once you get used to him you will (probably) perform very well. Pipe is great and even though it uses your groundbounce you can still do CRAAAZY damage off of it. Missile is the best assist for him since it hit’s low, is a projectile, and hits OTG so you can actually use it in his combos.

Yeh I figured out about the Missile usage in his combos today.

I had little to no success with my Haggar/Wright/Doom team tonight. I’m still gonna put more time into Haggar, but certain matchups like Magneto and Dorm (both had hidden missiles) literally felt hopeless.

Damn I just want to find a team I can feel confident in losing or winning with that involves Wright. It’s so discouraging. I feel like I’ve been looking forever, and that I’ve gotten tossed around like a ragdoll for a while now (even though I do have some success here and there). Especially after coming back with so many people having more experience. There’s so much to think about in this game already, stacking Wright’s crazy character on top of it really makes it insane.

But god damn it do I love him. Aye, a blessing and a curse. At least when it comes to me and this game. He still is a lot of fun to play though.

EDIT: Had much more luck today with my Ghost Rider/Wright/Doom team. I always felt good about this team, but I’ve never tried it in this order. It’s nice because GR’s heartless spire assist can double as a GTFO (not the best but can work well) assist and a nice OTG, while GR also benefits from Doom’s missiles.

Oh god. I love RR.

Wright (a)/Chris (b)/Rocket Raccoon (y)

Chris’ gun fire and RR’s pendulum really helps Wright gather evidence and zone. The wall bounce of RR is pretty much a free objection (Duh). Their flame pools cover Wright really well.

RR is all about creative set ups. I got all out creative with the guy with his traps. Too hard to explain but I had a lot more fun with this guy than with Morrigan.

I like how small the guy is. Make him hard to hit or even see at times. Lol.

**Edit : **Whoo-pee-doo. I broke the 600k mark again with the help of assists.

636,000 damage, 1 meter - Wright (b), Chris (b), Rocket Raccoon (y)
st.:l:, cr.:m:, st.:h:, :f::h:, :a2:+st.:s:, Wall bounce, Position Wright close to the landing point of the opponent, :f::h:, st.:s:, j.:m:, j.:h:, j.:h:, :d::h:, Dizzy, st.:s:, j.:m:, j.:m:, j.:h:, j.:h, j.:s:, :qcb::atk::atk:

**Edit 2 : **Interesting stuff that maybe some have noticed.

If a character attacks Maya’s shield, the meter gain is the same as when you hit another character.

What’s a good BnB to work on for Trial Mode PW?

What about Turnabout Mode?

I decided to post me playing some online ranked matches with my Wright team. You probably won’t find anything new here, but if you want to see some more Wright gameplay, or just want some entertaining matches, check it out.

I’ve still got a lot of work to do with Wright and online in general, but I’m pretty confident with this team. I’m excited to dig into more ranked, online can be pretty damn fun if you go into it with a learning cap on and not taking it too seriously. Anyway thanks for checkin it out you guys.

I checked out your video and here are some suggestions:

.In the second match the Doom player was throwing a lot of plasma beams out. You can dodge those with :d::l: and :d::h: in investigation and in trial :d::l: If a Hawkeye is zoning you out with triple arrow and the blue arrows you can dodge them too, though good Hawkeye players will do :h: arrow into triple arrow if so switch to trial throw out a paper then dodge.

.I do recommend using the :f::m: overhead with Wright often since you can get two evidence on hit and not a lot of people know about it a string you can do :l:->:d::l:->:f::m: to trick people, especially in turnabout since people would be intimidated.

.With Ghost Rider if you can H.missile assist ready and you hit confirmed :h:->:h:->:dp::l: or :d::h:->:dp::l: you can do :h:->:h:->(Call doom)->:qcb::l:->(Missile hits opponent)->:h:->:qcb::l:->(Missile hits opponent)->:h:->:qcb::l:->:qcf::l:->:qcf::atk::atk:

.About the Doom corner combo that you dropped I believe you have to delay the OTG :h: a bit to avoid dropping, after the fourth loop use :m: into level 3.

Thanks for the tips. I had figured that out about Wright’s c.:l: being able to dodge some attacks, but it’s good to know it works pretty consistently. I’ll start putting it into my gameplan. And yes, the overhead is something I’m really trying to remember to work in. I think the fact that it looks so unsafe is what keeps me from using it, but I know it can be canceled and with missiles covering me I really should be using it a lot more. Thanks for reminding me.

About the Ghost Rider combo, I’ll check it out. Did you see my GR combo at the end of the video though against the Skrull player? That’s the combo I always go with if I have missiles ready. I’m not sure if it does more damage than your combo, I’ll compare, but it does end with the bike which makes it easier to go into Wright’s DHC. I suppose that I could just end your combo with the bike too though.

Yeh and as for the Doom loop I just screwed up, said it in the annotations. Even though j.:s: is incredibly important for Doom in this game, I still need to get used to it more and understand it’s properties better because I hardly used it in MvC3.

Thanks for the constructive criticism! It’s pretty awesome being able to see me own matches and being able to better point out what I can improve in my game. Really makes me wish this game had a replay feature…

As a general question, what ‘can’ cr. L/H dodge?

I understand you can dodge doom’s plasma beams, but not magneto’s. I’m trying to understand how Wright works more so I can work on his defense/offense approaches.

Taken from the PW guide thread:

It’s important to remember these. Being able to dodge moves like Plasma Beam, Hawkeye’s arrows, and Sentinel’s :h:/c.:h: is actually match-up changing. It can also help deal with assists, too.

Yeah I saw your GR combo on the Skrull player if you’re more comfortable doing your combo go ahead, I think mines just does slightly more.

And yeah keep up the good work and like you said have fun while doing so.

Been workin’ my Phoenix Wright/Frank West/Akuma team. Doin’ good work.

What’s a good way to guarantee getting into Maya (okay, have your laugh)?

After an air combo, dash back a bit, call Maya, then dash forward. That should place you right in the middle of her shield.

In other situations, you need to judge Wright’s screen position is when compared to Maya. Sometimes you don’t need to move at all, sometimes you need to dash backward after calling her… Make sure you know exactly where she’s gonna show up at any point, even if you’re off-screen and your opponent is a super-jump height.

Doing a Kara “Investigate” ( :h: (miss) xx :atk:+ :s: ) also works if you’re a bit away from Maya.
