Nuuk, Greenland: Crack Sessions In An Igloo

Yeah, I can hook you up. AKS knows a lot too.

Basic knowledge- Divekick is your best pressure tool, obv. Can direct it by holding forward or backwards during the kick.

If your opponent blocks your crossup divekick low, do Target Combo. That’s stupidly hard to block and basically gives you free ultra.

Essential B&Bs are divekick, s. fiercexx fierce tornado, divekick s. short s. fiercexx fierce tornado, divekick, s. short, s. strongxxstrong tornado.

Any time you hit a tornado into the corner, follow up with LP tornado or ultra for fraaay damage.

A good way to mix up your pressure strings are divekick, s. short (tick throw!), and forward MK. the overheard is risky, but it’s enough to break up your string. I like to do crossup divekick after that if I can.

Boxer and Zangief are bullshit. If they’re walking backwards, you’ll never divekick them.

Great normals for footsies/spacing are…

Back MK - Decent speed, good extension, doesn’t really combo into anything but I use it to beat Lariat.
Low Strong - Gdlk anti air, but not a one size fits all thing. Rufus doesn’t have that.
Low Fierce - Grab the nachos. Good reach, decent damage, very punishable if you’re predictable with it.
Far MP - Beats Blanka ball clean. Literally one of the few ways that matchup becomes ‘fair’.
DF MK - Rufus Roll. Very punishable if you’re predictable, but it’s a good way to close the gap. Can’t really combo into it, but it puts you into a great spot to triangle jump divekick or overhead. Watch out for people who see that and mash DP, though.
Far Roundhouse - Surprising priority, kind of slow, but launches into either a reset, ultra, or crouching fierce punch if you’re a scrub like I am.
Far Fierce - Great reach, great angle, all in all great anti air.
Close Fierce - Really fast, cancels into tornado (duh) and he literally punches straight up, meaning it’ll beat out buttsplash and people who jump in directly on top of you.

Some cool shit:

EX Tornado anywhere on the screen leads to Ultra on Zangief, Boxer, and Claw.
Jump HK has a lot of uses and a lot of priority once it’s out. When Vega comes at me with a wall dive I just Jump Back HK and then do something off of that. Works for a lot of things, including Gen’s gdlk walldives.

There are some really weird gimmicks he has, I can explain some of them to you on XBL or something.

I feel like I’m forgetting some obvious shit, but other people can fill in the holes for me.\

edit: all in all, I kind of suck at Rufus, but he’s just kind of a natural character for me to play. having some good execution helps on the one frame links, but he’s just a powerhouse with mixups and gimmicks all day. hope i helped

you can combo off df mk, which is helpfull. it lands alot cuz people like to stand against rufus, combo into c.lp xx ex palm.

mixup- get a focus crumple, dash in and wait for them to fall a little. then do slk followed right away by a df mk roll. they pop in the air, you cross them up. this is for when u want to show off(should be all the time with rufus!!!)

ex snake strike as anti air makes your opponent terrified. you hit them with a couple of those babies, they aint jumpin in anymore. this opens up alot for rufus, when you can get them to sit there and let you go to work.

cmp is good too, and u can get some mixup off it as with almost anything rufus does. get close to them on their recovery, its a pretty even geussing game after that…pure geussing. thing is rufus gets soooo much off a good geuss. so you can be in there face when they land and do…divekick, dash back sweep, ex messiah, overhead, throw, etc, and if they jump and you catch it…ugh ex snake strike.

divekick, slk, mixup is all you need. Evo top 8 rufus was built on this, throw them a few times…then when they go to break throw he would divekick a second time into big damage.

i like df mk and then either throw or ex messiah ALOT as well, very good. especialy in a close match when u have 3 bars, go for the frame trap ftw.

remember to dash backwards on the fadc ultra in the corner.
full meter super combo = in corner- any combo into tornado, juggle with tornado canceled into super on first hit with fierce punch. does alot of damage, good if u land this early in a match.

cmk xx ex palm will is my punish of choice. i think quick punishes are rufus’s weakness, cuz if you bait a lp dragon punch, you have to be close enough to walk forward and land a close fp into tornado for a decent no meter punish. mk ex tornado solves this, but sucks you have to use your meter, still does excellent damage.

i think allen can help with anything else, and especialy matchup knowledge.

i forgot about cmp ex tornado, that shit’s hot

oh, cmp is decent as a poke too. on counterhit you can do mp tornado and some other stuff.

but yeah, divekick s short throw/dive kick s short divekick bnb, or divekick overhead then ex messiah are all valid.

rufus:

one thing you need to realize is rufus divekick mixup changes dependent on how high or low you land your divekick. for example, if you are using divekick as a way to get in, you have a 3 way mixup between throw, another divekick, or ex messiah. this is because divekick as a means to start your pressure is usually too high to continue a string, that is why most people will find it best to DP before or after these kinds of divekicks. it tends to be more predictable because of your limited options.

the best kind of divekick is the one where you are already close to your opponent and tick them with like c.lp or df.mk, or s.lk. you are already really close so that means you can do a low divekick, which is good because it is a continuous block string. for example, if you do low divekick, you can follow it up with s.lk(+3 adv blocked). after s.lk, you have a 7 way mixup. you can do s.fp xx tornado(hope for counterhit), another s.lk(for more mixups), throw, another divekick, walk in a bit and ex messiah, do nothing(bait), or jumpback lowdivekick(whiff bait). GENERALLY it is a good idea to continue pressure from this type of divekick though.

look for escape patterns from opponent. for example, since rufus is typically an in your face type character, once you get in, opponent is very limited in the ways he can escape your pressure strings. if you notice he likes to jump back during specific time in a string, catch him with early j.hk next time…etc., if it whiffs, try to tech throw upon landing if he is trying to go for throw, or go for ex messiah option select…right before you land, bust out ex messiah kick and mash throw immediately. if he threw you too late, you’ll get ex messiah, if he throw you, you’ll get tech hit.

if you notice your opponent likes to DP inbetween your divekick pressure, most likely that is the mixup you’ll have to deal with for the rest of the game so bait the DP more often than not. if he doesn’t dp inbetween, he is ptobably a safer player and it will be easier to do reckless pressure. very important for rufus to understand the escape patterns of opponent. both styles are easy to deal with. if you have someone that dp’s in between your divekicks, you can get good punishing combo. if he plays safer, then you gotta go for throw mixups.

df/df shortcut for ex snake strike is good. just buffer it sometimes when you are in spacing situation. because even if they don’t jump, the time they do, they eat it hard.

after you land forward throw, you can dash in twice and get 3 way divekick mixup. you can do high divekick for the crossup, mid divekick for the front pressure, or a back divekick for a reversal bait.

always keep this as the rule of thumb…high divekick is a 3-WAY mixup, don’t try to incorporate more than the “throw, another divekick, or ex messiah” that’s the main three in ANY situation off of a high divekick. well, you can also do nothing, lol…4 way mixup.

do not underestimate the use of a neutral jump divekick either. these are the hardest to anti air. but learn when to use them.

the rest you should know, bnb, target combo, etc.

i wish i had a writeup when I first started playing Rufus, I literally had no idea what to do and had to feel it out. =/

Kaal, tonight you were wondering why your DP wasn’t coming out when you did jump-in option select DP. The reason is that the option select relies on the difference in recovery of a hit/blocked jump-in compared to a whiffed one. Basically, it didn’t come out because you ‘hit’ me.

Ramen keeps on telling me that I should pick Ryu as my main. Do you guys think I should switch from Seth? I mean, I do ‘ok’ versus Rex sometimes with Seth, but I’m just really sick of going 0-2 at AR ranbats.

I’m completely willing to tier whore to do better. So really what I’m asking is whether you guys think Seth is holding me back. Do you think it would be better for a player at my current skill level to main a different character than Seth?

Edit: I know Seth is a good character. I’m asking because like Glenn has told me, I get predictable, and then I get punished for it. So even though I know I’d be just as predictable with any other character, I’m asking if my predictableness would be any less debilitating if I were playing a character with 1000 health.

It should hit even when you focus, because that doesn’t count as a hit.

Well, I was saying that in response to you being guile. I was saying that if you’re having a frustrating uphill battle with seth, you’re gonna have an even MORE uphill battle with guile. I think it would be a good idea to pick a character who has an easier time in the game and THEN go for a character whos fun to play/lower tier(seth/guile).

mr k- ryu is a great character to learn. i don’t know if you should main him though. i dunno how well your spacing, fireball, footsie game is. never seen you play any char besides seth to really know. the thing about playing seth is he’s not a great character to learn how to play streetfighter in general. he doesn’t play conventional sf style. he’s really fast, has weird limbs, etc…just weird character mechanics.

but i think right now, you’re seth is doing fine, you just need to not get hit, lol. play safer.

dis is the universal truF…lol you can win in any game by applying dis… unless the goal of the game is to die faster…

seriously though mr. k, seth is REALLY easy to go 2 and out in tournaments since he has the lowest hp and stun in the game… anyone can just bank on the full bar ultra and get you with their tournament only tricks…lol so… picking ryu, sagat, boxer, etc would be “harder” to go 2 and out unless you have no clue what you are doing…:looney:

What Jay realy wants to say- “Pick blanka and jab ball to throw alot” this is sure fire way to not go 2-0. You think masher sagat breaks that quick ass throw, nah that nigga would have got bit.

Wait, that’s the goal of HnK, right? Shit, Jay I thought I was WINNING all those matches

mr. k. At the end of the day, go with who you’re comfortable with. I will say that If you practice that Ryu more, your ryu will be really really good. but yeah you just need to able to play the waiting game better with seth.

Edit:Just wanted to add that if Ryu doens’t seem to fit your tastes as well as Seth or Guile, fuck it, just play them instead.

Yo J,

lol… that rabbit needs two drills like the choginga one. too bad the CV is not really in the show :stuck_out_tongue:

I think you meant HP Tornado instead of EX?

Thanks guys for all the tips, really good insight on Rufus basics!

One question – how do you fellas handle the Rufus mirror?

Yeah. Man, Wakamoto should have been the Anti-Spirals. That would have been epic. Or at least Lord Genome. That’d have been epic too.

It reminds me more of the King Kittan Giga Drill Breaker than the Choginga one.

Allen, you are right like five billion times over. Just played a decent Ryu online (online still sucks), and when I decided to stop jumping in like an idiot and play stupid-ass Seth keepaway, I went from losing six straight to winning 3 out of 4.

Yo, Kiet, when are we leaving tomorrow for sure?

Good luck at SB4, guys. Sorry shit came up and I couldn’t go too. I’ll def be going to Final Round, and that $1000 Nashville tournament is seeming likely too.

@Kaal: ROW ROW, FIGHT THA POWAH

We’re going to leave earlier than expected since alen can take his test earlier. we’re thinking of 1. So pick Jay up around noon. Give him a call to make sure.
