I have to ask, when did people start using number notation (i.e. 236LP = Hadouken) for fighting game moves? I dunno if it’s just me, but I personally find it really annoying to have to read, especially when my laptop doesn’t even have a separate number pad to use as reference. Since SRK has specific smilies such as :qcf: for that kind of thing (or classic notations such as QCF), is it really necessary? Not sure if I’m the only one who’s been bothered by that, so I’m curious as to what others have to say.
It helps. I mean you can just save a small pic of a numeric pad to you laptop for reference when it comes up. Different strokes for different folks.
I first saw it when I was trying to learn GGXX, I guess it’s because the numberpad is universal unlike acronyms or words and when you use the official button name, there’s no confusion. No all forums had smilies for directions.
It’s pretty helpful, and a lot of games use it. I don’t see how anyone would not know what a number pad looks like[S]…People use phones, right?[/S]
Forgot…It is different. I obviously don’t use a phone…
Numberpads on keyboards are bottom to top, though.
And I don’t really mind either. I use “qcf” but everyone has their preferences.
Annoying. Numbers never were my thing.
Wait, what?
Number notation allows you to state exactly which inputs you are referring to, which is useful when explaining things that go beyond the basic move inputs. For example, one version of BlazBlue had a character whose corner combo involved repeated use of a tiger kneed quarter circle back special. Now in general it is possible to just say TK [move name] and people would know what you are talking about, but in this particular case you needed to TK ending in neutral up or up-forward instead of the usual method. Thus you would say 2148X or 2149X rather than the usual 2147 input.
Number notation is already the standard for many non-capcom games, and takes very little time to learn.
This is what happens when you don’t sleep…
This ^.
Numpad is really convenient for TK motions.
So why can’t you just say TKx?
Personally I found the numbers thing pretty annoying. Surely QCF etc is pretty self-explanatory.
Because:
TK QCB Neutral Up+ Button vs 2148+Button
It’s annoying only for people that play nothing but Capcom games and don’t want to put in the time and effort to learn something new.
People who play a variety of FG can also handle multiple “languages” with ease.
But hey at least the animu notation is following the japanese standards.
Have fun trying to understand japanese tekken BBS when you got used to TZ lingo…
1 Charge 3 12369 + k or Guile’s super
6431+P or forward back down forward down back Punch
22+C or down down C
12369 236+p + Dong’s air super in a short hop
Most of the time its easier and quicker to write it in number notation.
Personally I just look at it as a matter of communication, for some games it’s much easier to use number notation and it’s the accepted standard anyways, while for others it just isn’t necessary. Really though, it’s not hard to get number notation after a little bit if you aren’t mentally handicapped.
I find number notation helpful because I play a variety of games.
I first learned it when getting into Soul Calibur 4 competitively. Then BB came along which used that notation also so it was very helpful to already know it.
It’s also really good for the odd inputs that come up occasionally
for example:
Raging Storm
down back, half circle back, down forward+punch
1632143+P
:db::hcb::df:+P
of course this motion made no sense to me until I had it explained as the pretzel motion but that’s a separate problem.
The number notation started being used when GGX/GGXX came out. The notation is fine, but you have to make sure u are clear with what you are saying.
the only people who find the number notation annoying are capcom fighting game players
numbers are universal and let people who speak different languages outside of english to understand what you are typing
plus its way more easy to write specially for lage combos
Also, LOL at Capcom creating arrows. Perhaps vector and phasor notation should be dropped in favor of numbers, too. Obviously, mathematicians, physicists and engineers are stupid for using annoying things such as arrows.
